Now then, I've been in Thailand about 4 years, and try as I might, I cant seem to get the hang of housing, feeding, and clothing myself without doing the working thing.
What would be really good if you could ask your wife for some tips and advice on how she managed it, and then post them on here. There's loads of geezers who would be really interested on how to do it, maybe they wouldnt have to go back home to earn money. Thanks in advance!
She had actually got a job back in Korat working at the DB? cant remember the name exactly but its the big ass chicken factory on route 24 near chok chai. This was while she was waiting for the visa. She was bored sitting home. She is a workaholic. Even now she works just about everyday plus taking care of the house and me.

    Noobie- 1, 'Old Hands' - 0;

Very pleased it's working out for you Bob. It's a credit to your wife too that she has been able to adjust to life in your home country- as you well know, it's a helluva change from Korat. But keep working on it.

Strangely enough, some of our vociferous 'old hands' seem to be stuck in a time warp. Or maybe they've just read too much Stephen Leather- lets face it, it is much easier and more comfortable than getting all hot and sweaty and seeing the real Thailand (wherever that is), and the wide variety of real stories it actually contains.

You can usually spot them by their Pearls of wisdom- e.g. if you meet someone in Pattaya she's bound to be a Bar girl. And a Con Artist. And have multiple sponsors. Blah, blah, blah. Of course, they are proved right beyond all reasonable doubt when they point out instances where this has been the case (e.g Stephen Leather books).

Sounds like you went into the relationship with your eyes open, and thats a good thing. Yes there are some horror stories out there. Sometimes, in spite of good intentions, your lady cannot make the shift and abide life in the West too- she misses her family and culture too much. But it's working well for you both and long may that continue.

    Cheers, and welcome to TD.

What if she's in Pattaya, working in a bar, and you have to pay a barfine to take her out? As the OP did. Doesn't that make her a bargirl? Not that that's a particularly bad thing but it is a little different than making assumptions based on Stephen Leather, whoever he is. Best of luck to the OP anyway but I do find it rather strange that people are assuming that everything is going to be just perfect for them, especially as they've only been married for 10 months.

I wasnt going to lie and say that I met her Big C. Yes she was a bargirl but like most things in life there are exceptions to every rule and a sterotype is just that a sterotype.

Dont get me wrong I met girls over there that I would never consider a normal girl. Good for a quicky and thats all. You can tell they just want the money.

Where some of the long time expats just see whores I see a lot of women that have very strong obligations to take care of the family whether they are worth it or not just part of Thai culture. If I was dirt poor and someone offered me a way to make money I never would be able to make in a lifetime I would probably do it to.

I will make this short because nobody wants to hear a positive story only stories about n00bs that get taken for all their worth.

I spent the rest of my holiday with her and had a great time. I told her I would be back as soon as I could. She ended up going back home a week or so after I left. Not for me but because her mother was pissed off at her for going to Pattaya and she would'nt let her talk to her daughter over the phone.

I kept in touch with her until I returned 4 months later. I never sent her any money. She never asked. No sick Buffalos, kids, parents, etc. I kept looking for some telltale sign That she was lieing to me but I could'nt find anything.

I went back August 2007 stayed 2 weeks. She met me at the condo I was staying at when I got in. She was'nt working anymore. We just had a good time. I met her family they are good people. They are pretty well off. They have quite a bit of farm land rice and Tapocia. The house is pretty big but old needs some work. Her dad dont drink which I have never heard of with Thai men. They never asked anything of me.

We ended up going to Bangkok to get a Fiancee visa. She didnt want to do it really. I went back home from Bangkok. She went back home also.

I visited her again in January 2008. She picked me up at the airport along with her mom. We spent most of the time at her house outside Korat. She showed me the real Thailand and I loved it. We spent some time in Korat city which is a real Thai city totally different than the tourist cities.

She got her visa in May 2008. I went to pick her up. She was sad to leave her home but excited to see Saharat/America. Took her awile to get comfortable in the US it was very lonely for her. We got married in Florida on July 15, 2008.

She got a job at a Thai resturant about 6 months after she got here. She sends some of her own money back home for her family to help out. We are doing great! Married almost 1 year. We just got back from Thailand a couple of weeks ago. Spent the whole time in the village. Had a great time I could go native very easily. She hadent seen her family in a year and she wanted to spend as much time with them as possible. We are trying to save enough money to move to Thailand in a couple of years I hope we can do it.

I found a good one. They do exist. She is not a whore she is my wife.
She takes care of me and I am truely a happy Man.

I guess it wasnt that short after all.

    About me:

    34 years old
    Machinist
    living in Florida
    Married 1 year

    About her:

    31 years old
    2 beautiful Daughters
    Working 6 months
    living in Florida with me!

The first year or two are always peachy... It's years three & four where things get dicey... They used to call it the seven year itch... Anymore if it lasts more than four years, you stand an even chance of making it work long term...

Wish you the best and good luck...

A few pages back, you claimed her parents were 'well off'. Why would the daughter of 'well off' parents work as a prostitute? Dirt poor is not the same as well off.

they are well off for farmers in other words still poor but not as poor as most of the neighbors.

Why do the kids of rich assholes in the US turn their backs on a good education and become worthless druggie losers?

^^ Yes, for two weeks or something (carnt be arsed checking the OP again). That means she has most likely had less sexual partners than an Aussie/US/UK girl her age. But so what.

The fact that most young women in Pattaya are not BG's remains- I mean, where do you think the girls buy their cosmetics, clothes, food etc? Thousands come to Pattaya to work in restaurants, hotels and shops, thousands of others pursue the allure of bigger money in the bars.

Anyhow, glad it's going well Bob. How is she getting along with the stodgy western food?

She eats mostly Thai food. She has me eating mostly Thai food also. I find it much more tasty than most western food and much healtier also. Also helps she is working in a thai resturant and is a pretty good cook herself. I have never ate so many veggies in my life! Who knew veggies tasted good?

I would have to think anybody with half a brain could pick out the real prostitutes from the farm girls that want to find a falang boyfriend and make some money.

I dont know why so many people have a hard time with this. lol
