and Lawon and the Astronmer Royal a few swineherds , unemployed, labourers it was an Inn like a nice country Kro where anyone could enjoy teh 1 beer the 3 choices of bottles, Rum Gin and Scotch and wide variety of very old Eggs, they did share the remanats of a Christmas Goose on Boxing Day with all present and I always plonked a Litre of Aalborg Aakavit for chasers when on shore leave. Such eccentric alcoholic chain smoking landlords with very flexible hours poachers, people asleep , rancid dogs were normal all over the public bars of Ireland and rural England before drink driving ,smoking bans ruined rural taverns. There were Saloon lounges for ladies and toffs with plush fittings higher prices and signs like no work clothes or boots.

If you recall the late great Chi boy Micahel Elphick who I knew in Portugal and my best pal was at school with his Bro, he played the poacher in Withnail and I , well the pub was just like that only less luxurious. Come to Norregard and maybe I'll have an eel for your pot.



Such scenes were everyday in places I recall pre 1980s, dogs kids a cloud of smoke open fires drunk Grannies with bottles of Mackeson , Big D Nuts blatant sexism racism and alcoholism , it was a different era, even rutal Ireland has gone clean no smoke and PC, the last remnants of such chaos is of course in rural S East Asia and parts of the Basque country where illegal drinking dens abound and of course the feral parts of Lancashire
