Why i dream about a new life in Thailand...

Every night, it goes something like this: I'm in the dining room, going through all my favourite Thai centric web sites and Youtube vids. My mother is in the living room doing her Coronation St/Emmerdale/Fair City marathon. I have my escapism, dreaming of another land, a far-away exotic place. I dont' understand what people who have who watch that crap. They live a humdrum existence and watch a show about other people, who also live a humdrum existence. Change the channel, change the accent and this is what you get on 'Fair City'...Person1: "Your father is only a Bollix". Person2: "Your father is a liar and a bollix". Person1: "Well your father is a liar and a bollix and a [at][at][at][at]!!!" Bloody Nora - is this what passes for drama??? Then, poke my head into the garage, where my sister is engrossed in Facebook, where doubtless she is reading yet another "one legged puppy sob story". "Oh", she types for the millionth time, "that is sooooo very sad." The weather is invariably shitty and depressing, but i have to say this week, the weather has been positively Mediterranean. I would like to be able to spend some of the year in a place such as Thailand or the Philippines, but it's a long way off financially...so i still have my dreams...

Dream on, I hope you make it to Thailand, and you will enjoy watching Thais watching even more dramatic soaps, the beauty of it is, if you don't speak Thai their soaps are amusing.

True. My wife sometimes looks at Thai or Korean soaps. She does not understand a word but she does not need to. They are just the same as Filipino. Not a whole show but just 10 minutes or so. She enjoys it, the same kind of overacting she is used to. The difference is she knows now how overacted they are.

....and even more amusing if you do understand the subtleties and vernacular of lakorn Thai language.

No no no! It is far more subtle and nuanced than that!

Our friends at Wikipedia have a pretty good bit about Lakhon:

Thai soap operas have very distinctive, though formulaic, characters and narrative conventions. Though some stray from these conventions, most adhere to them, especially ones that are very popular among Thai viewers.
    • They are always about achieving a perfect ending in which the leading characters marry their soulmates and live happily ever after.
    • The two main lovers are established at the beginning of the series. Viewers have no difficulties singling them out of the crowd for they tend to be the most popular soap opera stars of the moment. The male lead role usually called Phra Ek (พระเอก) as the main actress had named Nang Ek (นางเอก)
    • The presence of one "bad" female character, sometimes more, is commonplace. This is the person who is totally in love with the male lead and will do all that is necessary to stop the two would-be lovers from fulfilling their destined ending. She tries everything to be the main actor's girlfriend and always tries to get rid of the main actress. She is often a stereotypical character who does not hesitate to do bad, bad things to the main actress including trying to steal her boyfriend before the wedding. She is often a rich girl or comes from a good family background, but has nasty behaviour and is manipulative. Few of these characters are kind. She is usually a living person, but a few of these characters can be evil, dead women who come back as ghosts. The most popular ones are Poot Mae Nam Khong or the remake of Pob Pee Fa. Nang Rai or Nang Itcha (นางอิจฉา) is a famous name for Thai viewers.
    • In the end, all conflicts in the story must be resolved. Everyone forgives each other. The "bad" guys receive their punishments and the "good" guys receive their rewards. However, some series end with unsolvable problems such as Poot Mae Nam Khong.
    • Thai soap operas are often melodramatic to the point of becoming camp. Most productions are written and produced with the assumption that the more melodramatic it is, the better. This is why situations are grossly exaggerated, actions are overly theatrical, and screams and shrieks (from the bad female) numerous.

Ok...sadly - I'm no longer in my "youth". I went bankrupt in the US after 20 years and I'm back in the old country. The government is paying me a "job seekers" allowance of eu188/week - even though i haven't paid taxes here since the 1980s...Socialism is alive and well. Thatcher would be turning in her grave. But i have to say, the old bird did something right - i have an uncle who gets his pension in sterling on account of having done 30 years in the UK. He gets 20% extra on the exchange rate.

I can see i really touched a nerve with those soaps...

Ok...not sure what "Egg Sarnie" is all about, but presumably gravy implies...well, the gravy train (welfare in other words). At this point, if i never work another day in my life, I expect to have a passive income of approx 500-700 USD/month in about five years. Social Security of 1200 USD/month kicks in about seven years later, (but would rise to 2000 USD if postponed a further eight years). Hardly the sort of money you could live like a king on!!! And no healthcare either...So...i hope to be in a position to work in the middle east half of the year in about five years time. (I'll be 55). Maybe live part-time in somewhere like Chang Mai???

I'm just green with envy at all the navy guys who had the foresight to do their time and now they're sitting on a private pension, healthcare AND social security. Retirement as our parents knew it is pretty much a thing of the past, at least in America. They did their porridge and got it over with and now they can relax and enjoy life. I'll likely end up in some shithole like Dharan. Bring on the Fosters...

Now would somebody mind telling me...what the hell is a "Minger"???

    So where are you, Paddy?...

Someone here thinks you are a "double-niccer"...An infamous poster from the recent past who is trying to come back as a new name...Hence, Egg Sarnie and Gravey...Changing your knickers, I call it...

Maybe you passed the test, I dunno...Heh...

Anyhow, have fun here...Minger sounds negative, na?...It is...You're not...

    Cheers

Why not try getting a life locally (health and sports clubs, evening classes, pubs, cinema etc) instead of being a couch potato in your mother's dining room every night feeling sorry for yourself.

In post 1 Paddy is a Brit whose family enjoy watching Emmerdale, Coronation street etc. but in post 13 he seems to have morphed into an American, very poor troll.

Only since the new repressive regime, to be fair.

    Use to be quite enjoyable.
