    Cool Hello from me :)

    Hi from Holmey

I知 British, 54 years old and now that my daughter, (who I have brought up on my own since she was 3), has finished her education and got herself a good job I知 considering moving to Thailand, (where I've had several enjoyable holidays over the past 12 years), to live.

I知 degree qualified, (business administration and management) and am self employed in the UK, working as a website developer and website host, (with over 350 hosting accounts), and would be looking to live in Thailand on my hosting income that is currently around 」1500 a month net, with it being quite easy to manage this side of my business anywhere in the world as long as I have my laptop and an internet connection. On top of this, I own my own house in the UK that my daughter would still live in, paying me a nominal rent that would also top up my income, (around 」350 a month). As my servers are non UK based, (Iceland), if I were to set up a company in Belize and limit the time I spent in the UK I could legally avoid paying taxes in the UK as my earnings would be all made outside of the UK and I also have savings of around 」25k that I would have to invest in my new life in Thailand.

I知 quite confident that my hosting income would give me a comfortable lifestyle in Thailand and what I壇 be interested in knowing is what the legal side of managing my offshore based web hosting business from Thailand would be with regard to work permits, visa痴 and possibilities open to me regarding living accommodation and such?

    All comments appreciated.

    Highest regards all,

    Holmey

Money should be enough as long as you keep out of Bangkok, that can get expensive there, you will most likely end up working illegally, ie no work permit, best to keep quiet about that minor thing

I understand that at my age and being British I could get a retirement visa, (if I deposited a certain amount in a Thai bank account), anybody know the score on that?

Firstly the money should have you living like a king! If you rent cheap you could have 」1500 spare to spend a month. If your living on that in the UK its more than enough in Thai. Where are you thinking of?? Presumably not BKK as DD mentions very expensive. My 1 room condo cost 35k baht 5 years ago in Sathon BKK so will only have got more expensive. Will be cheaper im sure, just where we were was bloody nice!

I looked into this quite alot as Thailand was my original plan, but then got the job in Vientiane where Mrs is from so picked that. Udon seemed the cheapest and still had alot of farrang stuff! http://www.udonrealestate.com/ or http://www.udproperty.com/property/s...geField=submit

If you search retirement visa's on here there is loads of info on it, its the Non Immigrant "O" visa. Some details of it here - Retire in Thailand | Retiring in Thailand with a Retirement Visa

Dont use them though prob cost a fortune!!!!

Moving to Laos next week and ive gone through quite alot of this lately. Though not to retire, mines for work.

All the best with it and look forward to reading the disasters along the way !

    Good luck!!!

I think you could do that work without a permit. It would be technically illegal I think so just don't tell anybody!

The income you have is plenty.
Dont tell anyone and you effectively are not working per se.
A retirement visarequires an incomeof 65kbaht per month (which you have) or 800k baht in the bank, which you also have.
Dont fall in love, dont get married.
Plenty of money to live a quite life in Bkk, or a really nice life outside.

Click on this link Visas & Downloads :: The Royal Thai Consulate

Scroll down and click on Visa application pack. Retirement visa details and application forms are in there.

The only that takes any time is the criminal records check. Up to 6 weeks.

Your income is well within the 65,000 Thai baht per month required for a retirement visa.

    Good luck

When you get here, plan few days in Bangkok then go and try Chiang Mai, Korat, Udon Thani in the north.
Maybe Rayong, Hua Hin Samui Phuket in the south. All these places have expat communities so you will find it easier to settle in and find your feet.
    After that, up to you.

If you need a fast connection then you should live in a Provincial City where the speeds are usually better. Overall the internet speeds here are crap for international bandwidth.

Thanks for the replies peeps, they are all appreciated.

I don't fancy BKK at all, (having visited several times in the past), preferring somewhere quieter and preferably near the cost.

The main thing I'm looking for by moving to Thailand is somewhere that I can live cheaper for less with some sun, with there being no way that I can afford to move into semi retirement, (only living from my hosting income), in the UK.

I'm not looking for a fantastic nightlife or plenty of women, (although, from my regular visits over the past 12 years, I know both are available), just somewhere that I can live a life of less pressure than I have now, somewhere an old hippy can go to live that little bit longer before he dies.

You will have a beautiful life on that my friend.

Anyone asks you what you do (in Thailand) tell them you just live here and earn money from exporting ____________ from China back to your home country.

    Good luck

That's the reason I went into a web based business, so that one day, when my daughter was grown up I could move out to Thailand Nigel & Jan, took me 4 years from scratch to get where I am, it's been a lot of work but well worth it.

I'm also considering online shop possibilities, selling goods sourced in Thailand online in the west, buying at Thai prices and selling at western prices, you out there in Thailand can appreciate the possibilities in this I'm sure.

get stuck in and start learning Nigel, try grabbing a site with Icelandwordpress.com, (one of my sites), it has e-commerce solutions built in and would be a great place to start learning that would cost you only a few quid a month to get up to speed with developing and managing an online shop. No messing about with managing a server on IW either...
