This is all that needs to be said. The Thais are NOT going to change the way they drive.

Indicator lights, when they are used at all, rarely mean what they would mean in western countries; so, when you expect Thais to understand what YOU mean by yours, you are seriously mistaken.

That said, I find that humming "There's a fuckwit on the road/His brain is smaller than a toad's" all the while I ride my little Wave here helps keep me focused.

I know they're not gonna change. But they should.

Road fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants per year

    Australia 6.8
    Ireland 7.8
    Japan 3.85
    New Zealand 8.6
    Thailand 19.6
    UK 3.59
    USA 12.3
    According to Wiki.

I'm still in the dark on this one but I think it is the law here that you need to give way to the LEFT ??

I have seen people do this, foking hilarious.

what chance do we have with that kind of rule?

I pointed the fact out when I sat my driving test here that Thailand is the pnly place in the world where they give way to the left. "yes, only Tailand" they said proudly...

I am hoping it was a misunderstanding, surely they can't be that stupid?

Just missed catching me, but he had to swerve a long way round me. Twat.

What you are supposed to do Issaen style.

About 200 mtrs before the required turn, start to wander across the road ,slowing down. When you get almost into the other lane, you will find the oncoming traffic swerves round you to your left. You are now driving between the cars and the m/c's, going in the opposite direction. Repeat for the motor cycles. By the time you get to your turn off,you are in the clear completely on the wrong side of the road,no need to stop. If you meet someone coming out of the junction, pass them left to left side, might require going off road a bit!

Edit:- whilst on the phone,of course!

I think for us it is give way, no matter what. Thias have no laws in their eyes, so drivers beware.

Their stupidity, selfishness, ignorance and arrogance is the root of the problem. This coupled with no law enforcement means Thailand's roads are some of the most dangerous in the World.

Yep, perfect explanation of the norm, in Bkk too... Everyday around me house and me workplace in the centre of town.

Fully agree with this approach. I used to (still do sometimes) get upset, but then they just get nervous/upset and start driving even worse...

One of the best things you see here in Phuket is with all the different farangs when the approach a junction to turn right and they turn into the wrong lane coming straight towards you the look of horror of me in my big truck coming straight at them

Yea but ya gotta admit that the Thai when it comes to getting something serious done they usually get it right.
Otherwise you'd see bridges collapsing and airplanes falling out of the sky on a regular basis.

A nuclear power plant will be tightly monitored by the IAEA and there will be more than a couple highly paid farang engineers in close proximity.

It ain't gonna be handled by Col Sombat and his jolly crew of cousins and in laws.
They aren't like to let these monkey brained kids anywhere near it. You can bet on it. I hope.

Personally I think Thailand will build a large concrete structure for which a cement company owned by a politician's relative will get paid large amounts of money, and the fuel rods will be sold to North Korea. I doubt Thailand will ever produce electricity from a nuclear facility...there is just too much money involved for this lot to leave it alone.

Cambodia is exactly the same, they always ignore indicators.
I think it is partly because one always sees motos driving along with indicator flashing and no intention of turning.
As for lane discipline-no clue at all.
In cambodia this is the first generation who have been able to drive a vehicle.
Thnaks to the khmer rouge most city people were murdered so these monkeys in big cars and flashy notos were driving only ox carts a generation ago.
I believe that the more who kill themselves the better, got to be better for the gene pool.

Actually, this rather jolly thread has just reminded me of my all time favourite manoeuvre. It only ever happened to me once, but I still think back fondly to how monumentally stupid it was.

I was stationary at traffic lights, and I was flanked by a twat on either side. I was waiting to go straight ahead, so wasn't indicating, but was positioned in the middle. Both twats were sitting there running out of patience, revving their engines and edging forward. I decided to just sit back and wait to see what would happen.

Sure enough, when the lights went green twat 1 on my left hand side turned right across my nose and twat 2 on my right turned left across my nose. We looked like some kind of motorcycle display team doing tricks.

The sleep of reason brings forth monsters.
