    Car Insurance

If the missus's car is half inched by a thieving gippo type or rolls down the road into the river when the HBrake fails. What is the procedure for putting a claim in?

Do I go to the police station 1st or call the insurance company 1st?

    Then what happens?

call the insurance company first. Then go to the old bill with the insurance man in toe.

EDIT - also, read your policy carefully. Most car insurance policies in LoS are maxed at 80% of the car value.

    Curious

She just paid for insurance again and my naughty side just came out again.

So with the insirance man in toe with me what will happrn?

Will I have to answer a load of questions as to where the car has gone or will the just say bolllocks and stamp me some sort of form saying it's been nicked.

How long does payout take? DO they investigate much or not?

If the car 'falls' into the river, they will winch it out and give it back to you.

    You must lose it completely

So if it dissapears how long for the cheque to be issued?

In the UK my insurance company paid up within 7 days when my car was stolen. Which was nice and it was stolen.

I would be interested to know what the rate of insurance claims are for theft in Thailand.

I expect that the accident rate is obviously sky high. I hear stories that our local big C has cars nicked every so often but otherwise I have no idea how many cars/trucks get stolen here?

    Any stats available?

If the car is valued at under a half A million baht the police will just laugh at you and say you must be drunk and forgot where you parked it, but they do have to take your statement and then it takes about 6 weeks for the insurance to pay up.

IME, Thai car insurance companies NEVER pay for "total loss" in Thailand. It could cost more to repair the bloody thing and they will. I heard it has something to do with the fact they part own the garage as well.

As for cash payouts, you're dreaming in technie color if your think that'll happen

I brought my car to the garage once. What I claimed was over 15,000 Baht so I had to pay 3,000 Baht for that.

nope. I said cost replacement - not new replacement. You got a 5 year old crappy car, you get a 5 year old crap car. You have a dent in the door - you get a dent in the door. And that's if you're lucky.

Mate of mine works for Merc in LoS. Not too long ago, Merc had a 0% down 60 month repayment offer. A number of the buyers were taking them off to Laos after "buying" them and selling them (after reporting them as stolen). The insurance company underwriting the cars refused to pay on one single car. Not one. Also, they made Merc change the program so that the buyers had to put 20% down.

Thai insurance companies will NOT pay cash. Even if your car got run over by a steam-roller and nothing was left bar the keys.

whole different ball game here. I e'fing hate the b'st. But what choice do you have?

Why do think they don't have a "no claims bonus" scheme in LoS?

Well set fire to it then. The insurance company can then please themselves. Either give you a replacement car or repair yours with a respray and new interior

actually, setting fire to the thing would most likely be the best thing you could do. Apart from they might then say it was an "act of God" (force majeure)

when I had my car accident 2 years ago my car was in the garage for 3 months. I phoned the insurance company up and told them I was going to hire a car and charge the hire charge to the insurance company.

There are officers at that ***** company dining out on that story today

^ Only claim I have had is when I reversed into a car park, there was a concrete protrusion that tore a hole in the Bottom of the radiator, cost 30K to replace. The insurance paid the repair shop promptly, no problems, I was not asked for a contribution.

^ I've seen (and had) repair work done promptly, but until DD's post I had never seen nor heard of a cash payout.

Way to go DD *my new hero*
