    V8 pickups in Thailand ?

Been thinking about buying a car to play around with, what I really need is a Aussie V8 ute but the chances of finding one would be pretty slim, So really any V8 pick up with a low bed for carting motorcycles around would be good. Anyone know any links. I have checked Baht & sold and nothing there that suits
    Cheers

A friend of mine posted this recently. Prices will have changed but the idea should still be sound.

"Just bought a Toyota 1UZ-FE which is a 4000cc V8 petrol engine used in the Lexus LS400 producing 265 BHP. The project is to fit this engine into a 2003 Toyota Hilux Double Cab Prerunner. The existing engine is a 2.5 D4D with an auto box.

The original engine is fine, just underpowered. Total cost of the new V8 with gearbox, ECU and wiring loom was 25,000 baht from Chieng Kong, Bang Phli. They will also give me 30,000 baht for the old engine, so I'm already 5K in front. There were many engines in many different conditions, but I found a later model at a good price. They can start the engine for you on the deck so you can hear it running. This one looks OK and seems to run well.

Being a "Prerunner" (2WD) model makes the whole thing much easier (hopefully).

Anyway, should be a learning curve, this conversion is pretty common down under, and there's a wealth of info on lextreme and toymods.

Should be underway in a couple of days, waiting for a space in the workshop. I'll update the thread with pics as it progresses."

My mate has a blue Falcon XR8.

There's nothing underpowered about the new turbo-diesels. The 3.0l toyota powerplant puts out almost 400nm of torque stock.

Up the boost on the turbo by adding a piggyback ecu and you will get 200+bhp easy. For not much more money you can extract 300Bhp fairly reliably from any of the stock diesel engines.

That sounds dirt cheap. In which condition was the engine?

They've been on the go since the late 80's so it could have been to the moon and back.

And most important of all :::don't forget to uprate the brakes. Its ok flying at God knows what speed, then when you try and stop you cook the brakes and you are still doing 50kmh with no brakes left! I know---I've been there. It's no fun at all.

There was one in my old town. Straight through pipes. Could hardly keep it going in a straight line.

It was a new shaped vigo as well with a dirty great big V8 and from what I was told a supercharger stuck in there as well

Not really interested in buying another pickup and changing engines, I have a pre runner already and the bed is to high as well a little short, I did think about a Colarado z 71 style and doing some work to the engine, which maybe the way I go in the end. But I would really prefur a good V8 ute

Ever thought about putting one in a container mate or would the duty blow the price out?

They'd get medevil on you, cars with engines exceeding 3000 cc. or more than 220 horse power attract 328% import duty!

    Thinking about it Rigger.

There was a lad in the motorbike group back in Chach who had an older pickup that he dropped one of those 3.0l supra JRZ engines in. A couple of turbos and modified the suspension. Cost him not much more than 150k at the time. Less I think in fact.

Sure the engine itself was under 50k

Sounds good Rig, I like that Lexus/Hilux combo, all Toyota. Cheap too! As far as braking goes, how hard can it be? They are designed to carry what, a tonne and a half and still stop?

I'd get a d4d 2 door pickup same as your pre runner and do what that guy did. 5k in front as well for rims/tyres etc! Low stress engine in a Lexus, should be fine and some road burner too.

Hope to see more pics of that conversion, tell him to thread up here!

The duty on pickups is much less than cars, I just dunno how its would work out in Baht. I dunno how the FT agreement would affect the price but between them both, FTA and cheaper pick up rate it may be viable.
Would be nice to have a 5.7L Holden pickup here.

but the FTA has a schedule of implementation, does it not? may not be in effect for cars or pickups yet...

It is KW, thats the reason the Holden badged as Chevys are a quite reasonable price here, sadly no takers because of the awful reputation amongst Thais with the awful Opel engines 2.6 Holdens that were imported here in the early 90's.

there,s a hx ute sitting on the side of the road on the way home big set of tyres all round, all black with a roll bar and full premier gear and a ford 9' arse end but only 4.2 under the bonnet all for the princely sum of 3500 au, it caught my eye i had a look a bit rough around the edges, but the potentials there.. but the missus is still keen on a 'vette'

Those JZ's with a turbo or two and an intercooler put out serious reliable power.
