New car or second hand? Finance or not? Where and When? Help - I need a car!

Recent health scares have made me realise I need a car. (Plus my family and I are getting bored!)

I am a long way away from any dealer so can't just 'drop in' for a look so would like to go armed with a good idea of what I want and what I should expect. So here are a list of questions that I would love some feed back on please. I have no preference to any brand as they don't sell Holdens here My budget is up to 700,000 baht. That will change if the aussie dollar sorts it's stuff out. I also have no problem with saving some money and going second hand. I would like 4 doors as I have two young kids.

    New or Second hand?

The two websites I have found in English for second hand cars are:

    Siam Car Trader
    Available used cars

both don't have much choice. Any others?

    Car or pick up truck?

Do I buy from the local dealer or Bangkok? Are their prices the same?

Are there any good specials out at the moment due to the end of year coming up?

Are there any extra costs once I walk out of a car dealership?

Roughly what will it cost for rego and insurance?

Your thoughts on the best brand.

Getting it financed by the dealer - does that cost a heap more like it does in the west?

Thats all I can think of at the moment.
News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.

Why do you need financing, MeMock?

I thought you were loaded after selling your company.

I heard somewhere that financing can be very cheap here so wanted to check it out.

With the way the exchange rate is at the moment I would rather not bring any money over at all and besides why use your own money when you can use someone else's

It's all in Thai but you can navigate easily enough using the drop-down menu in the top-right. Best thing is that for whatever make/model you're interested in it will usually give you a range of selection from several dealers so it makes comparisons easy.

There is a guy operating a car biz for foreigners, he does it all for you, reg, ins, makes sure the car is good etc. I cannot remember the name, but he used to advertise in the Bkk Post, also on TV and think it was expatautos or some such name. That may help.

Thanks Ant for that link and Lom for sending me over to the 'other side'

    I also just remembered BahtSOLD.com | Thailand Classified Ads | Ads for 26th Nov 2008 | Page 1

This car here looks okay and is in my neck of the woods, would it really have cost 900,000 new though? BahtSOLD.com | Thailand Classified Ads | Toyota Vigo 3.0 G D4D 4x4 D/Cab

Be careful mate most of the second hand cars here are ex-rentals and almost all of them have been flogged.

I'll PM you a contact number of a friend of mine who could maybe help you out with a decent car or at least give you some good honest advise.

Bought new Nissan 3 months ago through finance 50% down and 17000 baht month over 2 years guarantees took a bit of doing. Toyota finance is the easiest for farang

Artist, how much could you have saved if you had paid cash?

LT - will check my PM's now. Obviously I am not interested in an ex rental car but a farang owner who has had it for a year or two and is going home etc.

Not much but in hindsight should have bought outright. Payments cannot be made by standing order so have to pay monthly at a bank post office or as this is Thailand 7/11. They give you slips to pay so if its 4 year repayment you get 48 pre written slips

    What you fancy?
    Pickup
    SUV
    Saloon car
    Hachback
    Sportcar

For 700g can get you a very nice practical Honda Civic.

The guy at ExPatMotors is a good bloke.

But, with your budget you could get a brand new pickup, which is what I would do.

Or a good second hand one and save some money for the family. Is not what I would do.

Not true. I have SCB online banking and on there i can schedule a series of payments to a whole array of companies within Thailand for any amount on any day to repeat each month for as many months as i like.

The more I think about it the more it will have to be a 4 door pick up as during the wet the roads are atrocious around here (rural Ubon).

That is what I am leaning towards (but I wont rule out a good 2nd hand purchase).

At dinner the other week I asked you what model you thought and I think you said Ford. Can you expand on that.

    My other questions were:

Do I buy from the local dealer or Bangkok? Are their prices the same?

Are there any good specials out at the moment due to the end of year coming up?

Are there any extra costs once I walk out of a car dealership?

Your thoughts on the best brand.

Getting it financed by the dealer - does that cost a heap more like it does in the west?

Also, anyone have any thoughts on this one: Baht and Sold Found on www.bahtsold.com

In 2.5 litre guise, it's got the best motor and best quality of trim out of all I looked at (I didn't look at the Chevy).

I just saw that Mitsu are doing 3%, but that shouldn't worry you if you're paying cash. The quality of plastics in the Mitsu was appalling.

For resale and ease of servicing the Toyota is your best bet. The Isuzu was overpriced when I looked last. The Mazda cost more than the Ford even though they're the same truck.

MM get a 4 Dr Prerunner Vigo, will hold its price better than anything else, don't Listen to Marmite, the Ford will drop like a rock and its not near as good as the Vigo.
You can't beat the 4dr pickups for value, running costs are about 10k reg & PLB ? correct me someone as my reg om a 2 dr is about 1000 Bt.
20 k Full insurance and the thing will go forever, 3 yrs on mine
120,000 Kilos set of tires and new front shocks

You're right about the resale value, but the Ford is a better truck imo, when I tested them both.
