Marmers, would the ford extra cab have room for a baby car seat do you think?
I have PM'd Sabang and invited him to throw his 5 cents in as well.
Extra Cab. 2 door.
And don't forget the (annual) tax on a four door vehicle is more than on a two door vehicle.
Standard cab. No doors. Just fake handles.
Both the Smart Cab and the Extra cab have enough room for kids, but the only one that has rear doors is the Ford. The other cab-and-a-half trucks only have 2 doors which mean you have to move the front seats forward to access the back seats.Originally Posted by MeMock

I am assuming that a 4WD chews through the gas a lot quicker the a 2wd and is more expensive to buy?
If that is the case, we are happy with a 2wd with as long as it has decent clearance.

3.0 litre 4WD is a gas guzzler. Suggest 2.5 litre, 2WD, 4 door. Hi Rider or equivalent! All makers have these. Prices are in the 700s.Originally Posted by MeMock
While I was shopping trucks I liked the Nissan offerings.
A 2wd standard cab was 440K. This could also double as a nice work truck.
Just throw the stinky noisy kids in the back like most Thai families do. If they're good you can get them one of those canvas cover things you see around.
You don't need to spend all that much for a good truck. The new Nissan is a stand up truck.
Especially the much better engined Ford.Originally Posted by Norton
There is cheaper around if you look, but as an example
Toyota Vigo, Isuzu D-MAX, ..., Various Types are available.
Daily
1,000B - 1,800B
Monthly
14,000B-22,000B
5 person +
2 luggage +
Ezy Car Rent --Daily, Monthly Rental--
The most practical choice is a Vigo.
Probably the best truck is the Mitsu really.
The Fords are pretty good too, but shite resale.
The Isuzu are dated, crying for a remodal.
I've never bought on credit here, what I do is buy second hand off expats who take care of the car and have the service receipts to prove it.
Thai Visa classifieds is a decent resource. Thai dealers, don't even bother unless you want a laugh.
FFS Memock do you want to run your family around on a motor bike... spend some real money and buy a decent vehicle...something a million plus would suit you better....simnce you sold your business you've turned into a right miserable cvnt...Originally Posted by MeMock
Hi Klongy,
I am running my family around on a motorbike at the moment! (and hire cars.)
Seems to be a few experts on this thread when in comes to my finances when in actually fact no one has a single clue.....
Given there is a strong chance that we will only be in Thailand for another few months that is why my budget is what it is. WHy would I spend a million + for a vehicle that I might only do 2,000 kms in and then only see it for say a month a year after that? If I could see myself here for the next few years then things would be different.

News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.
What do you think of this one which is in our neck of the woods?
I have thought about it for sure Smeg as it does look cheaper in the short term (especially if we don't hang around that long) but then whenever we come back for holidays etc it will add up pretty cheap and I am sure in a few years time I had wished I had bought something.
Tax? What tax? How much?
I'm not Thai I am a farm boy from Australia though and have no problems throwing kids in the back for a trip to the next village or down the river but any further then that and they are strapped into their car seats if I have a choice. (Aged 1 and 3)

Actually Klongy, I'm going to take you to task on this one even though I am not sure if you are taking the piss or not.
Why do people who assume if other people have money that they should buy the best cars, live in the best houses and generally throw their money away?
Ever thought that some people have ended up with money in their lives because they were actually frugal with it in the first place? You sound just like a Thai person!
If that is the case, surely rental would be the better option. A vehicle that is not going to get regular use can suffer badly, if not properly laid up. If you are not going to be in LOS for long periods, have you thought of the security of the vehicle, do you have that rarity in Thailand, a secure garage? Are family members likely to borrow it, if so, do you think that they could be trusted to have it serviced? Have you considered that your annual tax and insurance would nearly cover a month's rental?
Your money, your choice, but I know what option I would take.
Hi Boozer, thanks for your post. I had never heard of annual tax before today so am hoping someone can tell me roughly what that would cost.
The other thing that is affecting the thought process is that there is work for a car in this village and BIL is seriously considering it. That being the case then we are thinking of going half in the cost and he can carry the year to year expenses. We only need it once or twice a week.
