I would buy new if possible and if you can afford it. To further advise you I'll need more information. How much you want to spend, what models you are looking at etc.

There are a LOT of second hand junkers out there as you have already seen and they want silly money for them.

Why do you want a four door? They are ugly and more expensive.

Crew cab is the nicest looking IMO.

Unless you live on a hillock or are pulling a plough 4wd is unnecessary, less fun and more of a drag in the performance department.

Just getting rid of my Vigo, it should be gone at the weekend providing my g/f's new car is ready for collection.

I was in an old 4 cylinder Toyota Tiger the other day that had a M24 Garrett turbo from the Skyline GT-R strapped to it. Looked beat-up but it was a wolf in sheep's clothing.

if it pickups best to buy new. Forget second hand units. Also consider like a Vigo Pre-runner (2WD) as this is better than the 4WD version.
I have bought 3 pickups all new. Second hand is just not worth the money, hassle and the condition they are in.
Remember Thais have bought them on finance and will have litlle cash left for service.
Just like ET driving a beaten down Tiger with an oversize turbo.

    You know the old saying?

Second Hand > Buying someone else's problems!

I would only consider a second hand vehicle if there was a detailed maintenance record offered and still had a least 1 years manufacturers warranty.

Again and as advised by the other good posters here basically the final decision should be in line with your budget.

Finally if you do select a second hand vehicle check for any previous accident damage. May not be visible but just run a small pot magnet around the front end and the rear of the vehicle. Be sure you protect the duco with a soft material such as an absorbant paper towel. Don't want to go scratching the duco before you buy the car.

    Good luck.

They do such good body work in the shops here that it take an experienced eye to spot damage.
More importantly is how the vehicle drives out. if it's got the shakes, shimmies or the wanders best to leae it alone.

There are good buys out there but you need some car savy and a little luck. Buying new eliminates those variables.
I just bought a used Nissan work truck for 100K. I needed to sink 60K into it. But now I've got a solid rig to beat up around the farm. The older Nissan's are quite tough and easy and cheap to fix. It's also very frugal with the diesel using one liter for 15 kms. That's better than what the new trucks achieve.

We bought an old Toyota Hilux ute for bugger all (under 200,00) and its been great. Dead cheap to run, no problems with maintenance, economical. Does us fine for pottering about. We had it checked out by a mechanic friend before buying and its run well for 2 years now. One old geezer in the village offered to but a short while back! Not worth selling.
It's all down to the mileage you're going to do and where you live.

No idea, but the old hilux diesel seems to be indestructable. When we bought it it had a new paint job and looked good. My cousin, the mechanic, checked it out.
    His opinion was
    Buy it,
    Complete lube job,
Get a 2 week guarantee - Thai bloke laughed and agreed.
    Hammer it.
    Still working?
    No worries.
He, my cousin, has been proved right.

People advise a new car which is fine if you can afford it. But, with a new car you start the engine you've lost 25%.
It's all down to what you want to do with the machine. I have a Toyota Land Cruiser in Aus. 90 series 1995. absolute basic model and its great. In the UK I've an old Bentley. Stays in the garage 9 months a year and fun to mess around with when I go back. An indulgence. Here, the Hilux has proven more than adequate for our needs. We lose nothing (really) if it dies, and it's given 2 years good service. Happy as.

We bought a second hand Toyota pickup

it was very cheap, looked a bit crap. It had wide wheels, a great number plate (ooh ahhh) and not too much mileage

it has run fine with a few necessary replacements. Servicing and repairs are very cheap, so we are happy with it

Buy a new one and you are always worrying about getting it scratched etc; ours already has the scratches
    I have reported your post

Well aporos of that there is no right or wrong answer to the question I reckon; new or used.

    It's all a matter of personal preference/opinion.

Bought a new Toyota Fortuner last month 3.0v Smart. Suits me I like it and I don,t care what anyone thinks!!
IMHO buy what you like its no ones f*ucking business but your own. As for the big knobs small knobs crap you get out of some of the moaning faced suckers on here, drive what you feel happy in. Big for me is protection of myself in the event of an accident, thats personal choice which everyone of us has. I would not pay any attention reference other peoples opinions on what I drive. Its my choice and I would never have asked this question on a forum anyway, to many know it alls!!

    ^ Fair comment.
It's up to you, for what you want and where you want to go.
Plus, how much enjoyment you get out of cars.
My point is simply that there are cheap second hand cars of reasonable quality. End of story.

Yep will do Janda! Its the same with all new cars you pay the premium for the warranty in most cases. I like the thought that in the event of something going wrong I can take it back to the dealer and get it sorted quickly.
As for the testosterone its not that flash its an SUV. If you want flash go to Bangkok and watch them all in their Mercedes/BMW.s Audi etc. The tax hike in Thailand puts me off yeah I could have bought one of them but I hate f*ckin customs so no extra money from me especially not car tax in Thailand.Which is one of the biggest rip-offs in LOS. Big vehicle nice and slow, nice and safe if possible.I stand a better chance in accident with a bus than a Yaris driver thats for sure.

    FKIN GD ONYA

That's the way to go mate.

    You sound like a Mancunian?

I'm sure you've done the right thing. For me it was all about buying something that I could fix and never really want to go very far. Different ball game from the high fliers in BKK etc.
Mines a tractor, got a complete service last week, full lube job, 'cos I couldn't be arrsed for 900 bht. That's like $30AU or 15 quid.

    Happy as Larry.

    Good luck.

    Only in your opinion.

The bigger a vehicle is doesn't automatically mean it is safer.

It's funny you should mention the Yaris as it is one of the safest cars in its class according to Euro NCAP. A five star rating no less.

Euro NCAP - For safer cars | Toyota Yaris

I'll tell you right now a Fortuner wouldn't get anywhere near 5 stars.

Don't you get bored with this?

Really, haven't you got better things to do in your life? You spout shite, vindictivally and malicously, for no obvious reason other than you own internal turmoil. Sad, sad, sad.

For you information, as if you care, but it might help others.

My aged Toyota Hilux Ute, 13 years old, possibly, likely, more. 250,000km on the clock, might be genuine, don't know. Just cost me 850 BHT for a full lube job. Everthing, diffs, gearbox, engine, break fluid, power steering, anti-freeze. Plus what ever I've forgotten. Ah, tyre rotation, break check.
I've done about 30,000 km in this thing. Keep it in 5th. don't break too much and we get pretty good mileage,
1500 ti fill the tank, lasts me a couple of weeks.

I payed a lot less than 200,000 for it.

    What more do you need?
