China tops list of world's deadliest roads

Report: China tops list of world's deadliest roads for 11th consecutive year
    2008-03-21

A government news agency says China's roads are the deadliest in the world.

For the 11th consecutive year, China has topped the list in number of traffic deaths _ 5.1 for every 10,000 motor vehicles. The Xinhua News Agency report Friday says government statistics show nearly 82,000 road deaths in China last year.

Xinhua said the world average was two deaths per 10,000 vehicles. U.S. government statistics reported about 1.7 fatalities per 10,000 registered vehicles in 2006.

Private car ownership in China has soared along with the country's economic boom. But overloaded vehicles, reckless driving and poor road conditions are still common and frequently lead to fatal crashes.

It's not the roads (which I think are pretty good) but the drivers and the anything goes road rules in some places. The amount of cars on the roads is growing rapidly too,HK has a great public transport system and they have implemented restricions about driving at certain times of the day to avoid congestion.

That's HK though,go to the mainland and it can be chaotic just like in Bangkok.I did drive in Shanghai but the traffic/road rules were too much.Locals get behind the wheel whilst intoxicated/high and the more people that can fit on a bus the better.Mind you not everywhere is like this, parts of China are quite civilized when it comes to driving.
