Honda had real problems with the first V4s and the Cam Chain on the VF750 in early 80s,they went back to the drawing board and the resulting VFR750 was an over engineered jewel, all their subsequent V4s are really nice motors.

That brings back forgotten memories! I had a Honda dealership in the eighties, we did a fair bit of warranty work on the VF750 when the problem came to light, can't remember exactly what the problem was! The next off the line 750 was the VFR, that was an excellent bike.
i think it was oil starvation in the top end.
Camchain Tensioner. I picked up a slightly fuk'd CBX550 that had a similar problem - rebuilt the engine it lasted two months before the problem resurfaced and i rode it straight into a scrap yard dropped it on its side and walked out got on me mates bike and fuk'd off.
Yes the gear drive motor fixed all that. Chain tensioners were very problematic for lots of makers very early on. Now its a thing of the past. The V4 with gear drives are relatively bullet proof.
