It sounds like that actuator lever inside the brakes that has the spring around it binds up some how or has some sort of interference. I can see why some put it in drive and they release. Makes sense being drum brakes are curved and when you go forward they would disengage.
Honestly I never experienced the issue but that is because I never use the "parking" or "emergency" brake as some call it. Around 5km I swapped out my drums for rear discs but I still do not ever use the "Parking" break.
If the parking break is released and the brakes are still engaged, I would check to see if there was still tension on the brake cable. If so the cable may be pinched or faulty. I will ask my auto mechanic son (who owns a hilux) if he has any suggestions once he reincarnates from his bedroom.
I have had 4 Hiluxes in 15 year in Thailand, I always use the hand brake every time I park, never a problem all Manual gear box.
Like any good machine if your don't use it often, then you will have problems.
reading the owners handbook there are 2 brake functions that are computer controlled, hill-start assistance control, and downhill assistance control
The hill-start assist control works by keeping the rear brakes on for a few seconds when you release the foot break and put your foot on the accelerator them the brakes release so you can drive uphill and you do not use the handbrake
I think this may being causing the brake problem, only guessing of coarse, our driveway has a slight slope so the vehicle could run backwards if not in park and the handbrake set,and after parking for a few days it does not release, you have to apply the foot brake before pushing the starter button, the control mo-dual may sense this and as i have to back it out will not release the rear brake
Late model vehicles are like airplanes only difference is you drive by wire instead of fly by wire, it will be interesting to see what happens in the future, will it be the same as planes which have already had several fatal and near fatal accidents caused by computers taking control only time will tell
^Had Hiluxes for work here for well over 20 years. (Personal and service vehicles). We are near the coast in Rayong, and never had any problems whatsoever with the manual transmission / handbrake system. Missus has a Mitsu Pajero with the e-handbrake; no problems yet, but I just do not like it..
I think you will find that a 12 year old hilux and the new models have different brake systems, your model does not have hill start assistance control on both 4x2 and 4x4 or downhill assistance control which is only on the 4x4
The older model hilux did not have this computer controlled rubbish and were far more reliable
Same me. I just do not like E brakes plus all the other crap they have that try and think for us. It used to be that the E brake was an "emergency brake" that if something should happen you can slow or stop the vehicle. Electronic brakes do nothing but lock up the rear discs. Now before someone goes off about "Old School", I simply do not think all that driver assist, back up control, Auto brake control, distance control is proven out yet. I have been waiting for the auto parallel park feature to malfunction and start clipping cars or people and let the lawsuits begin. There already have been a few instances in the states.
While Off topic a bit, Its concerning that we, as a human race, want people to think less and do less especially driving. While I am tech guy and enjoy almost all that is out there, There are still things that should be left to a person to make a call. Example, In my wife's Pajero a few weeks ago, a motorcycle with side car was in front of me then moved out a bit into the lane and the F'n auto brake function engaged which actually nearly caused me to wreck versus just letting me drift out and around it. Its simply too digital and cannot see what else is around you. I like ABS, traction control, back up camera's, select a terrain function etc. Cannot stand lane avoidance, Auto distance, auto braking, auto parking.
Yes modern cars have technological assistance that older ones don't... the core mechanical components are the same though and drum brakes are older than jesus and yours has hill start assist maybe your vehicle has ecu/can bus issues if you think the hill start is the issue.
