my 2 satang is to get a 2nd hand car from the owner...don't go to a used car sales place.
it will take some looking and maybe a trip or two to another town...but if you have 200k as the top price, then you need to poke around.
...and also consider the cost of repairing things you didn't notice before you bought it.
you can indeed get a driveable car. consider small things minor (sorry this is obvious) and take the cheapest car with the strongest motor, suspension, and transmission. everything else can be replaced at a decent price.
also, if your wife is from there, ask mechanics and other folks. you might be able to get a car that has had one RESPONSIBLE owner.
i wonder if that's a good bet in his price range.Originally Posted by Luigi
over 500k, id say those thoroughly inspected cars are a good bet.
they have to make their money...and they do. but for 150k-200k...well, i would think the pickings would be quite slim. (the page doesnt load for me, so i didnt check it). but having owned a couple of cars in LOS- one used- i would say that a used car salesman can be every bit as dishonest as any individual. ...just be sure to take it to a TRUSTED mechanic and have them spend an hour going over it. well worth the cost.
does it fuck, loads of those dealerships turn back the clocksOriginally Posted by Albert Shagnasty2017
as for Fiesta as mentioned by Jim, i was gonna get one for the missus until i read all about the gearbox problems
i'm seeing an increase in the number of pensioner falangs tootling around on these three wheeler sidecar jobs, with the missus reclining comfortably in the sidecar.
some of them are rigged up with a shade over the driver and sidecar.
for local tootling in a rural or semi rural area they look ideal for the motorist on a budget.
That's right Dill,
One cannot trust a Thai Car dealing monkey as far as you could throw him.
New cars are piss cheap here so the Farang peasant should just flash the cash for one Eh.
Toyota Yaris is available to the cheap arse farang pleb.
They give em away for free.
Great runner by the way.

Unless you can buy a diesel Isuzu, Toyota is supreme.

Yes it is. I should have checked my facts before sounding my horn.
I'm sure many of them do, but if you can confirm that the mileage is genuine by cross referencing with the service book and amount of owners it's had then obviously it's better than something with 10 owners and a shed load of miles. Much easier to do if you're buying it privately from the original owner of course. And I'm sure Thai 2nd hand car dealers are no more shady than western ones anyway. Wouldn't be possible!
Reminds me of a story when I went to see a Jamaican mechanic in Kilburn who we bought and sold cars with back in the 90's. He was busy changing the whole dash console to, in his own words "Give it an 'ickle haircut, mek it look younga!"
My first car purchase was from an Irish expat who lived in Bangkok. It was an older Nissan diesel pick up with low milage and when I asked him if the odometer was correct, he stated he was only using it on weekends and no longer wanted to drive it due to all the traffic and crazy drivers. I half believed him and wound up paying him 250,000 baht for it back in 2005. I ultimately gave it to my BIL for being the foreman on our house build and doing several other projects. He still has it and it is running strong.
One never knows the true condition of any car and just like in our homelands, one must complete their due diligence before purchasing any high priced item.
More than likely, so you should be okay.
You can get burnt on any used car
I have gone back to a Lexus again in the UK
Not the best looking or the best to drive / economical
But if you buy an ok one they never let you down
I've also got a diesel mondeo with a tow bar that has been a fuckin nightmare only 62000 miles on the clock
My mate whose a taxi driver has done 260000miles with some small repairs here and there
Sometimes you can just buy a dog
I'm surprised your'e not disabled with all the LDL cholesterol you consume...

go with the 2nd hand car. but make sure you check it out so that while on a tight budget, you dont bloat that with repairs.
OK, we bought this about 18 months ago.
Don't worry ... the license plate been changed
300k on the clock. Diesel motor replaced with a LPG Gas one.
Paid circa BHT 165,000 ... outer Bangkok.
Bought it sight unseen ... but the FiL went with his 2 mechanic friends and gave it the
Personally, I'm not a 'Truck' fan ... but the approach road to where we live is often flooded and rough as guts and it's the car for the job. 2WD, but high clearance.
But FatOne ... I do have a couple of questions, if that's OK?
They're personal.
Something I don't understand ...
You've been slaving your guts out to retire with a little, and I mean little coin.
You built a place in the sticks in Thailand, then, 3 weeks ago ... this bombshell ...
Somehow, in that 3 weeks, and I don't think you've been back to Thailand and now you have ...
Have you committed to a lady, you haven't met yet, who has 2 sprogs in tow?
You met on line, haven't met in person, and now there is the feeling of a relationship and commitment?
A couple of weeks ago ...
So you married a Thai woman, paid for the house near where she is, just got it finished, and she calls the relationship off. You got no coin to speak of.
No house.
You're still married to Thai woman # 1.
You've met a girl on line, never met her (though I bet you claim you have skyed each other and it's true love) and mentally moved in with her.
Going to be living on a pension.
Want to buy a cheap set of wheels.
WHY ... because she needs them?
FFS ... go buy a Honda Wave and be done with it.
SERIOUSLY ?
Mate, you don't need Car Advice ... you need Relationship Advice.
All, of course, IMHO
Please feel free to correct any of my outrageous assumptions.
Carry on ...
165k for THAT? what a freaking deal!
300k kms is a lot, but still. thats a fucking deal and a half
Yeh ... we're happy.
I reckon though, the torque convertor is on the way out ... there's a noticeable 'shudder' while under load ... but it's fine for normal driving.
That beast is a dime a dozen here and replacing the TC with a decent 2nd hand one I reckon won't break the bank.
Twelve months later, the tyres are sweet, no hint of shockies needing replacement, ball joints, wheel alignments, R n P steering, while tardy, is fine and the tyres are at maybe 60 - 70%. The alloys have no scrapes and, apparently, it was a 1 owner from new.
The FiL has also bought a spare wheel and sprayed that god awefull, but usefull oil to the undercarriage and, in fine tradition, has put it, the oil, through the doors so that the bottoms don't rust out.
He didn't mention it (the oil coating), but you can see the slight stains on the front and rear running boards.
Changed the oil and filter ... hasn't asked for a santang ...
Sometimes you get lucky in Thailand.
considering how much those are, new, putting in a 100k to get it prim and proper is still a good deal.
though, the bumpy backroads takes a few lives off of that kitty
Slow down you move too fast.

as long as the body is still good and the frame has not been fcuked - being a 4 door and if the canopy is from as new it is unlikely that somchai put 2 tonne in the back
a reconditioned diesel or jap import swap would not be too expensive if the current one craps out
an automatic ? again - if the body and running gear are ok , still not to expensive to fix - though if you are not using it yourself continiously , why bother to spend too much money on itOriginally Posted by David48atTD
the price you paid originally was quite good
though you did not specify the most important part - is the aircond up to scratch
