    A police escort in Thailand...

Like many other people living here in Thailand I have been stopped in traffic to make way for some VIP. Today, I was on the lucky end of the 'no traffic, let's go' syndrome.

This is what happened. Me and a buddy were headed to the area of the old airport. All of a sudden a 'motorcy' cop was beside us.

He kept waving his hand telling us to go faster. The only problem was my mate's car is an old Toyota. Top speed is about 120 KPH. He was pushing the pedal to the metal but soon everyone had passed us. I was rather confused at this point.

Then I noticed no oncoming traffic was allowed on the expressway.

The 'motorcy' cop moved to the far right lane and kept waving his hands for us to go faster. At this point we were actually exceeding the legal limits.

Then I took a quick view behind us. Please notice NO traffic in front of us! Shit, no traffic behind us!

Come to find out the big fuss was about the grey car in this photo and the photo above. Must have been someone pretty damn important to inconveniece thousands of commuters on their way to work.

Except me of course. Wish that I had been in DD's sport car...

You should see them in Pattaya, if your still driving when the motorcade comes the Police try to ram you off the road, makes for a great driving experience for tourists

You can buy a single cop escort for peanuts (bout 5K a day) for the biggie ( for guys with REALLY small dicks) with clearing of the roads etc, you would need a lot more dosh and contacts, but it still is available for sale, just to piss off the commutors.
Before he was elected PM Thakky used to drive around in His Benz in the passenger seat with the window down so all the folks could see what a egalitarian fellow he was, course once he got the big job snared, fuck that ! he needed half of Bangkok cleared before he would deem to grace the public roads.

What they do is ask the policemen that hang around 24 hours of the day at every intersection if they will man each intersection when the convoy comes through

Doesn't sound like you folks have ever lived in a national capital city before. Traffic being blocked is an almost everyday occurance in all of them all over the world. KL had the all the time.

I think if you read the thread it is actually about being in the motorcade accidently rather than seeing a motorcade.

PS I never saw one in London.

I saw Thaksin once being chauffered in a Bentley (1960 ish model), I presume it was his car. That was a couple of years ago when he was still PM. There was no police escort. If it wasn't him it was his stunt double.

Your right in the respect of KL, every jumped up white hatter there thought nothing of inconveniencing hundreds of commutors so that they could get a police escort, but outside of these countries I have not seen this sort of thing.

by every intersection i mean U-turns as well.
only major intesections are usually manned 24 hrs. bkk or elsewhere.

just recently a one car convoy actually came down the wrong side of the road,I guessing because they couldn't be arsed driving down to the nearest U-trun.

I was in a two car escorted convoy once from Jakarta airport to the Shangri La hotel. Four police motorcycle outriders, one police car.
Apparently the whole thing cost about $100 US to set up. That was 2000 or 2001, so wouldn't be that much more now.

Arranging a police escort to clear trafic is nothing unusual in Thailand. I've been in several escorted vehicles myself. You merely need to pay for the service. It is just traffic duty after all.

Saw a few politicians being escorted in London and royalty too when they attended functions.

Yes. Have a word with your local police station and you can have an escort arranged no problem. Fee is dependent upon number of vehicles/cops and distance and time.

Bit like a barfine plus ST/LT rates. I probably wouldn't advise discussing it in these terms though.

Didn't you get an invite to the house-warming party? I left the arrangements in Nooner's hands, so I presumed everything would be spotlessly organised.

I see them all the time passing through the village mainly escorting coaches. Not just one or two but six or seven at a time all half full of bored looking wannabes that have managed to be part of whatever important thing they are doing.

Most likely watching some peasants weaving baskets for their new OTOP stall and wasting the budget money which would have been better spent on actually trying to help those same peasants open a bigger OTOP stall and maybe make some money.

Saw an impressive one out on the highway a few years back.
First the local cops came past in their pickups and using loud hailers told everyone to clear off the road. Then more local police pickups came thru at high speed with sirens and lights blazing. We were in a roadside market and everything just stopped dead. It was an erie feeling. Then a few minutes later about 4 police sedans came thru at very high speed, again with sirens and lights blazing. Following them comes a silver Mercedes doing about 200 kph. Whoosh and its gone. Then more police cars.

My driver told me it was the Princess driving the Mercedes as she prefers to drive herself.
