Anybody have experience of Tata pickups?

I am thinking to get a cheapo pickup for a landscaping business that is expanding.

It needs another pickup (possibly 2) for hauling stuff about, not more than 3-500 kilos probably and there are some really cheap used Tata ones at TaladRod.

Under 140K for a 3-4 year old diesel car with a factory CNG kit (useless in Phuket I know because there are no filling stations, but still) seems very odd.

Are they really that bad? One is listed at 99K!

I'd guess it would be worth more than that for scrap metal alone so are they so badly made or unreliable that they simply are not worth the trouble or is it more of the local market perceptions at work - the same sort of thing that makes the local BMW 3 series cost more than double the UK prices etc?

    99K, 2010:
    «×éÍ¢ÒÂöºéÒ¹ àÃçÇ¡ÇèÒ.¶Ù¡¡ÇèÒ.´Õ¡ÇèÒ

    119K, 2012:
    «×éÍ¢ÒÂöºéÒ¹ àÃçÇ¡ÇèÒ.¶Ù¡¡ÇèÒ.´Õ¡ÇèÒ

135K, 2010 with a Carry-Boy type box on the back:
    «×éÍ¢ÒÂöºéÒ¹ àÃçÇ¡ÇèÒ.¶Ù¡¡ÇèÒ.´Õ¡ÇèÒ

138K, 2012 with big load bed and metal frame sides:
    «×éÍ¢ÒÂöºéÒ¹ àÃçÇ¡ÇèÒ.¶Ù¡¡ÇèÒ.´Õ¡ÇèÒ

This would be for some Somchai to trundle around in with a labourer and a lawnmower, maybe a couple of trimmers and bags of fertilizer and soil and what-not.

    Thanks for any ideas/info.

Edit: fuck knows what happened to the text encoding for the links but if you hover your cursor you'll see they point to TaladRod for examples.

Is there a Tata dealer in Phuket? Have you looked at Suzuki, lots of LPG in Phuket?

The answer would depend more on your clientele. If you are servicing upmarket punters, they would prolly expect Vigo or Highlander.

If it's mostly expats they prolly won't give toss, so buy cheap Tat(a) and flog em to death.

Already been done that's why they're selling so cheap...Never used Tata P.U.'s but plenty of Tata 18 wheelers, dumps, flat beds, etc. in the construction jobs. Good work horse no frills units. Maintenance is the key.

Unfortunately the units you are looking at have spun the odometer three times already no doubt...won't do you much good if the cheap thing is sitting broke down 80% of the time and money goes through it like shit through a ducks ass...

One of the guys down the road here has a construction company and to haul building materials and staff around, he uses a few of these Suzuki Carry mini-trucks. I'm always amazed how much junk fits in these little 'mules'. Sure you can find one of these in Phuket. New cheap, I believe somewhere around 360.000 THB, second hand even more cheap...

We don't think there is a dealer in Phuket, although there seem to be quite few on the roads so presumably somebody knows how to fix them here. We have looked at Suzuki but the Carry is really too much for the job it'll have to do, plus it doesn't have the extra cab bench in the back for a 3rd & 4th passenger if needed.

Also looked at the Chinese DFSK Carry clones, but they are only ~150kg lighter than the Carry with about 1/2 the hp. I worry that 52hp and a 1,000 cc engine isn't going to get the truck up to where some of the clients have replaced the top of a hill with their houses even if it is empty, let alone with anything in the back.

I'll stop in the BigC carpark and retrofit a Toyota badge into the front if necessary! At a quick glance they are almost identical visually anyway

That's what I am thinking too. Do digital odos go around to zero or is it a matter of replacing the unit?

Our water guy had a Tata and can't remember him having a down day in the last two years, unlike the prior two when his pick up truck was always breaking down. They look to be a simple and strong compact truck to me.

Don't know if you are ever in the Surat area QC, but there is a stretch of route 401 between Big C and Lotus. Runs for about 6km along the city ring road absolutely rammed with used truck/car dealers. Must be thousands to choose from. If you follow the same road where the 401 heads off to Phunpin/Phuket, there are all the main dealer showrooms including Tata.

If the vehicle has an ECU and Body Control Module usually the KM's are stored there.

If you replace the odo it will still have the same KM's displayed.

Can't be all that bad. It's the same company that makes Jaguars and Range Rovers, yes.

The Tata's are ok.had a peugeott designed diesel motor, but just like the chinese utes,
they are behind in the crash stakes with poor protection compared to the Japs/koreons.

The TATA flat bed P.U. are a copy more or less of the Toyotas sold in the M.E. for light duty work. The Toyota's are work Beasts...solid from the ground up!

If the Tata are that cheap truck you get a cheap truck.
Looking at the price of the second hand, tells the story as the Tata are not cheap to buy new.

Apparently 539,000 baht for Extra cab and 629,000 baht for Double cab.

This one's in Dubai...Excellent work horse.

    Then theres the classic

    They are popular there.

Then theres todays more popular version.

Then there is "Plan B," for those discriminating souls in the landscaping business...
