engine problem with the kinlon 250

I have been having an issue with the Kinlon 250 for the last 4 weeks - since I got it back from the bike workshop.

I had asked them to change the tubes in the tires , change the oil and the fuel filter and check the bearings.

it starts very easily and idles ok

the first I noticed the issue was on the ride home - about 10-12 klms

the first 4-6 klms is low speed through the city centre area - 40-50 kph

then it is up to 80-85 for a straight of 3-4 klms and then a curve which I normally go back one gear and take at about 65-70 and then back to third for a corner.

when I backed off the throttle for the curve it sort of hiccupped a little , and then when I went back to third it backfired a couple of times and the engine died.

I thought the workshop monkeys had drained all my fuel , so I shook the tank and it started first time and on I went.

when I next went out on my way for fuel it started fine and ran ok ( maybe a slight roughness ) and was good for about 4 klms and then played the same trick - engine lost power , backfired as I changed down gear and died when I held in the clutch

I stopped for 10 seconds , hit the starter and it fired and idled no problems.

I then put fuel in it - it was about half full ( the workshop monkeys only stole 1.5 litres by my calculations ) and it ran ok.

over the next couple of weeks I came to the conclusion that it seemed to be ok when the tank was full , but the problems occurred as the tank got to half full and below.

I took it back to the workshop last saturday and explained the problems ( in my non existant french and their miniscule english ) and asked them to take it out on the highway to see the issue.

they told me they could not replicate the problem , though I saw that they had re routed the fuel line and filter , and the bike ran ok back out to camp - though a reasonably full tank.

this morning I headed off from town at 5am , reasonably cold ( it is mid winter here ) , a full tank of fuel and it ran fine for the first 7-8 klms until I backed off the accellerator and I could feel it getting rough.

it did not actually die or backfire , but it started to exibit the beginnings - this route I used I run in second for about 1-2 klms at about 30 over some dirt and sand , then about 40-50 for 1-2klms then up to 80-85 for about 6klms before I come right back to second to go left at a round about - it was here that I noticed the beginnings of the same issue. accellerating away from the round about it performed just fine.

does anyone who has read this far have any thoughts ?

Fuel filter or other obstruction. If it runs better with a full tank it's because the weight of it helps with the pressure en route to the carburetor.

The backfire if it comes out the ass end could be an exhaust valve badly adjusted or burnt. The mechanic might have tried to adjust your valves.

is the tank vented, might be blocked, also had a bike that ran like yours, was a bit of crap blocking the fuel outlet in tank when the level went down.

Could be water droplets in the fuel which block the jets. Try draining off the petrol and refill the tank with new petrol.

as I have never pulled a bike card apart before , I thought I may ask about any traps for new players

I am guessing the bowl is at the bottom and from a few of the web diagrams it seem as the jets are also in there

Not very likely with considering he's probably using ethanol blended fuel.

Most like the problem is a pinched vent for the tank, or a detached vacuum line.
At worst it could be gummed pilot jet, which usually a simple fix.
That look like a pretty standard CV carburetor.

It isn't the monkey in the workshop that is the problem !
It is the stupid monkey that thought he would save himself thousands of Baht by buying this heap of shite instead of a proper bike.
Get used to it being in the shop or running like a bag of shite.
That is going to be the majority of the time
Treat everyone as a complete and utter idiot and you can only ever be pleasantly surprised !

I have noticed that if I only go 60-65 I do not have the issues , though I can detect that it is not running as smooth as it has in the past

is it just a matter of taking the bottom off the carburettor and unscrewing the jets and reaming them out ?

the tank cap just has a nipple on it that I push a bit of flexible hose onto - it comes off regularly , especially when I add fuel

This is what it sounds like to me.

Baldrick, when you open the fuel filler cap, apart from the big hole where you put the fuel nozzle, is there also one or two smaller holes? They are attached to a couple of small tubes which vent the fuel tank. If you have access to an air compressor, with a small nozzle fitting, blast some air down those small holes to see if it unblocks those tubes. The other end of those tubes just goes to the outside of the tank, underneath.

Baldrick I have a cunning plan.

Apart from a new spark plug etc. that has been suggested. Is the fuel filter in the picture clean?

Can you get access to a bottle of fuel system cleaner? If so bung (no pun intended) some in the tank in proportion to the tanks capacity.

Have a look at any small rubber tubing check it is in good condition and all connected somewhere.

Is there a manual fuel shut off or is it automatic? If automatic check the small rubber hose connected to it for leaks etc. Have the mechanic take it off and check it is clean.

Should you wish to take apart the carburetor it is not difficult but I would highly recommend you take the carburetor off the bike, by disconnecting the fuel line and the throttle cable and undoing the clamp, and not do it while it is on the bike. Then you can do it on your kitchen? table on a piece of cloth or paper. Be gently and it only takes a screwdriver. Remove the bottom and then only remove one jet at a time blow it clean and replace. Many instructions for carburetors on the web. The top has a spring under it and a thin rubber diaphragm. Check that carefully for holes.

Backfires are usually caused by air leaks in the rubber section between the carburetor and the engine.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.

the screw on cap has a small nozzle on top which has a tube connected - I can blow through the nozzle and out the bottom of the cap.

nothing I can see inside the tank

well I found a "car" parts shop in town and enquired about some fuel additive that would clean the carburettor and selected the item below.

very dusty bottle and my limited french I will try some of it in a tank of fuel - it says to use a bottle for a 60 litre tank so I will ise 25mls in my 6 litre tank

hopefully my problem is a gummed up pilot jet and this will dissolve any waxy buildup - I have been hesitant to remove the bowl as if I fcuk the gasket it will not be very easy to find another.

Sounds like an air leak or dirty carburettor to me.

Don't be afraid to take the carb apart it's very simple and easy! Don't worry about any gasket as you can simply re-seal it using sealant.

Where abouts are you in the world anyhow?

I went down the servo , added a couple of nips of the french spermicide to the tank and filled it up with fuel

I then rode down the beach for a couple of beer and then back out to Ambalamanas - the rough dirt should have mixed it well

this morning I gave it the full 12 klm run out to camp and it performed fine - very slightly rough , but much better than before.

the fuel here is not very good - not refined after it comes of the ships - so I think I will add a couple of nips to the tank every month or so.
