Fair enough - I was going that way anyway
No harm in making some enquiries about how it might/can work in the futeure, and I get to see northern Laos.
Off up to north Laos tomorrow, borrowing a bike from a mate in Vientienne and heading up to the Chinese border to try and communicate
Will post some pictures when I'm back in a week or so.
Have fun
You'll find all the answers re visa / border crossings / license over on gt-rider mate.
Cheers
^I have looked mate - briefly.
Either way - I want to show my face and make a few connections. It can't be long till its a green light (with conditions)
Some info here...
U.K. to Thailand
Blinding mate - cheers.Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog

I couldn't get the bike off my mate so am trying to hire one. Getting quoted 35$ up to 45$ per day for a 250cc. The guy who wants 35 doesn't want it going so far north so that's not an option.
Think i'll bus it up to Luang Namtha and hire a bike up there.
On the thread you just linked to on GT rider one of the guys had an accident and they need someone to bring the bike back to CM for him on the 25th which is the day I planned to head back to Thailand - so I've offered to help if they need someone to ride it back.
Anyway - not going 100% according to plan - but that's life
Even if I only get 24 hours of riding in here - it's a start.
I think I'll have to get 6 months payments on the bike under my belt so i can take my bike in and out of Thailand (finance company rules) as hiring is expensive.
Anyway - I'll post up a few pictures of whatever I get to see and do over the next 3-4 days.
trip postponed due to unforseen fuckery in vientienne.
I thought you had to pay all of it off? Anyway, I'd only really want to take my bike if I did something like that.Originally Posted by Albert Shagnastier

My Misses called the finance company (one of the 2 that work with Honda Bigwing on Ram Intra BKK) and they said that after six payments I can take the bike in and out. The condition is that you have to apply for the written permission at least 7 days before you need to exit (each time). Not ideal but at least I don't have to wait 3 years. This is why I was going to use a Laos bike. My mates bike was not available, and I couldn't find a rental company that would let me take the bike up to Luang Namtha/Muang Sing. I have to be back on Monday and the bus is 18 hours one way. Coupled with the fact that the Thai embassy in Vientienne was closed yesterday and is also shut today (as its a big BIG mooda day/s) means I can't get my passport to them till tomorrow. Basically I just don't have enough time.Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog
Piss poor planning on my behalf
I might wait for the 6 months or I might do it in 3. If I do it on a rental though I'll enter Laos at Houy Xai and rent a bike there.
