    Which bike?

    Right.

I want to buy a new bike. I want an ER6 - but I don't want to spend that much money (read - I can't afford it )

    Here's the financial scenario.

    Put down about 30-40k.

    36 months (4-5k) per month.

Now I believe this leaves me with only a 250cc option?

Therefore I'm honing in on the Kawasaki Z250

What would you buy with the same funds (or close to what's above anyway)?

Have you considered the Honda 500 range. About 90k cheaper than the ER6.

With that deposit your payments should be around 5-6k.

A rather nice Honda of that ilk is for sale in Route CC in the dark side in Pattaya. Very tempted indeed' good sturdy bike in my opinion.

That was what I was wondering. Thanks JJ
I think I'll go to Honda tomorrow and see what the current deals are.

Yep I was going to suggest the Hondas for approx 200k. The Z250 is a beautiful bike but its still a 250.

    3 models to choose from - the R, F and X.

    ^ I'm thinking the X

Looks like it has the best riding position from the pictures.

Was just reading Marmite's thread on his F. What's your opinion on the running in (rev wise) do you agree with the guys here who've raced or the Honda dealers? Having just said that I think I already know the answer

I'm in the high load, low-ish rpm runs for 10 mins camp. Cool down. Repeat twice more.

This takes forward planning as by the time most people get home from the dealer the bores are already polished.

After that you can ride it like you stole it.

Say that again slowly please -

    High load (weight wise)?

I have a few days off - will do a visa run somewhere so can probably follow your instructions straight out of the dealership non stop for 1000 clicks. Have time - no problem.

I'll prob be told I'm wrong but I do it this way -

Break In Secrets--How To Break In New Motorcycle and Car Engines For More Power

Or just make sure you vary the revs and change the oil early. I've never quite understood the manufacturers 1000km break in, after all you're only trying to seat the rings.

Good luck with whatever bike you choose mate!

    Cheers

I had 3 years or so in which to buy a Kawasaki, but couldn't bring myself to do it.

As soon as the Honda 500 came out, I got one.

I guess I'll be doing the same as soon as the Honda 650s come out.

Honda is pretty solid in the engine dept.

Have done both type of engine break in.
Followed the manufacturer recommendation and I've done the thrash it from the get go.
On normal run of the mill bikes such as the ones you're looking at. Does not matter so much. Engine performance pretty meek from the start anyway.

    AS,

The cool down is the most important. sometimes takes an hour. Depending where you pick up the bike, ridding up and down hills for 10-20 mins at varying rpm will work with a cool down in between sessions.

Get the bike delivered to Khao Chee Chan Budha Image ? But I guess up down and around Pattaya hill might work but I have never been there.

Or you could just ride it like everyone else does!
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?

I try to do a break-in somewhere between the link above and the manufacturer's recommendations- I'm certainly done within 1000km (when I do my third oil change), but I don't really thrash it until then (though redline will have already been visited under load).

One thing about 'MotoMan' (the guy who wrote the much quoted hard break-in procedure)- he's kind of a nut- try clicking on a few of his other pages- that doesn't mean he's wrong, but I don't treat what he says as gospel.

An early oil change (way before 600km or 1000km or whatever the manufacturer suggests) is the most important thing- I do one after 50km or so- there is always a bit of metal that will come out, and you want to remove it as soon as possible.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Hard to say unless you use two identical bikes.
I recommend hard break in on high powered engines, ie superbikes, etc. Run of the mill bikes such ZX14R I just go with what the manufacturer recommend.

Common theme is to keep the rpm varied and engine always under load. Do that and your engine will be solid.

Right out of the manual- seems incredibly conservative (not to mention difficult to follow), doesn't it?:

Thanks for all the info guys. I just tried a 500 x and 500r and then went to Kawasaki and tried the Z250 and the KLX250. Have to say after the 500's I wouldn't consider the 250's - not enough power. Both of the CB500's felt solid and had a decent bit of power but I think I'll go for the X as it seems it would be comfortable for longer tours. I'll try a hybrid between the manual and the extreme break in - will report back if I blow the fvcker up.

Who has ridden one of the new CB500 (any) and an ER6N?

The payments would be 1500bt more (5.5k/month 500x and 7k/month for ER6N over 36 months)

For someone that knows both bikes - just how much better is the ER6N? worth the extra 1500bt??
