On another forum there was a thread that used cars can no longer be imported, is this true? Anyone ever done it ? I see from the Customs site the duties are aoutrageous, but for an older car , maybe not so bad. Any experiences?
Thanks

Imported secondhand cars cannot be registered.
^
Not any more the law has changed
Thank you for those responses Used cars are so expensive, though. any ideas as to the conditions of import ? The Ministry of transport site is useless
think of a number ,
double it
add 5 zero's
multiply by half your age
Buy Local .
Search the news section, there's a news item on it.
I have also had it confirmed by some professionals.
I know where there are several expensive cars stored in Thailand.
If I could register them I would be rolling in it.
Do these new laws cover motorbikes as well? What about new, can you still import brand new vehicles if you're prepared to pay the huge duties?
You could end up paying 2.5 times the value of the car as import taxes, but yeah sure, if you pay enough you probably could.
I thought it was just second hand car PARTS that couldn't be imported from this year.
as the wise men have said.
go buy a nice pickup or something.
I'm looking for a used car. Damn they are expensive here. Are there any sites that can give me a ball park price of a used cars worth similiar to Kelly Blue Book? Thanks
The Meth One's Fuck The Best !!
I will always buy new & when it gets about 6 years old, sell it for a good price.
I'm in the same boat but only here a year so just need a temporary import which was showing as a lot cheaper to do is this still allowed. I'm looking at many different sites / forums all giving completely different information.
The links to the main government sites or whoever deals with imports (also found via google ) all bounce back at me. No one seems to have a solid answer.
I do not want to import anything fancy I'm just after a couple of grand worth of beach buggy as can't find one here and if I did I think it'll be the wrong side of 10k . The say the fees are based on car value .... Who values them on u? Can u show a receipt for £500? Someone must of done this recently and have hard facts proper emails etc as not really interested in guess replies as my time here is running out 10.5 months left
Don't bother even considering to import unless you have some connections in very high places!
The only way I can think of doing it realistically is to ship you car to Malaysia on a temporary import and then crossing the border in it. You would then get a 30 day stamp for the car so you could theoretically keep doing visa runs for the car.
The other option would be to cross the border and not bother with the visa runs and get a fake number plate and documents for the car but really is it worth it?
Check out one2car.com there is loads of used cars on there. The cheapest used car in Thailand will set you back around $3000 USD And it won't be great at all! It's a completely different market to the west and there is nothing we can do about it really.
Other option is of course to buy new which I would suggest in all honesty. The same here in Laos when I was looking for bikes. I went to see a few but the prices were stupid! A 1996 Honda XR250 for $4500 and a Kawasaki KLX250 is bad condition for $5000 USD!!! In the end I just bought new.
After all as people have said they don't de-value so much here at all so swallow it for the time being and when you come to sell you will get a good price back! My wifes sister bought a Hilux brand new is 2009 for $27,000 USD, she sold it three weeks ago with dents all round (Needed a lot of paintwork!) And 36,000KM on the clock for $24,000 USD!!!!!!!! CRAZY!!!
Why would he want to bring it again?Originally Posted by The Big Fella
