    Helmet Cameras

I have just picked up a new helmet mounted video camera for a upcoming road trip.

    http://gopro.com/cameras/hd-hero2-motorsports-edition/

Does anyone have experience with these and could suggest a easy to use video editing program?

I went for a ride at about 4am this morning, I have some footage of 3 scooters racing away from the traffic lights. One was a midget and he won I'll upload it later.

Oh and don't make the same mistake as me, as soon as it was delivered yesterday I wanted to try it out so jumped straight on the bike and took a cruise around Ramkamheang. Obviously there was eye-candy everywhere and as the camera was mounted above my head it followed everything I looked at... Missus was very impressed with 30 minutes of footage looking girls up and down

I'll be interested to know how you get on with this camera. I have just bought one through West marine in the US. Has all the fruit and cost just 7750 baht on special (down from 9330)
Can't pick the cam up until I hit the US in October, so, no nice mountain m/c footage from Thailand.

The problem I have with these (apart from your missus having proof of everything!) is you look like a bit of a knob.
Do they screw with your helmets airflow at high speed being so big an chunky? I would have thought a belt mounted cam with fibre optic leads to head mounted lenses would be the way to go.
As for editing I use Roxio. Came with the laptop, works ok.

^ Max speed I have reached so far was about 130 kph this morning and I did notice a little more helmet 'drag' than normal, I have it mounted on the top right now. I was thinking to mount it to the bike but then the vibrations would be too much to get a clear image I think.

    ^^ That's a good price, I paid 13,500. GoPro | ????? GoPro HD HERO2 (Motorsports Edition) | ???????????????? ???????????? ????????? ???????????????? ??????????? ???????????? :: DIGITAL2HOME :: Digital Camera :: Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Panasonic..

I have bought mine mainly for recording a blue water passage on a cruising yacht. Would have loved to have one for the bike though. I thought it would be good to strap it low down onto the crash bars on the LHS..Probably need a rubber mount to keep the vibration at a minimum.

    Thats the one.

Yes, bike mounts I have seen do look very jittery.
How do you calibrate or aim the camera so it's looking where you look?
    Just guesstimate?

^ Yep I guessed at position and it seems fine. A pretty wide angle lens helps.

This might be a good idea if I'm on the dirtbike, But tucked in on a sports bike your just going to get a nice shot of the tank.

I just bought one for $250 (Motorsport edition) in the States- my friend brought it over to LOS yesterday and I'll pick it up in a few days.

Yeah I guess I over paid, but I don't have any family coming over until next year and I have a few rides planned before then.

I thought about buying it online and then decided that if I was to get hit with import tax then there isn't much point. I believe you can pick them up new on ebay for 250-300 $.

I would have bought one locally as well to avoid taxes- I just got lucky with the timing.

It looks like a fun toy- I'm looking forward to playing with it.

    Anyone tried CyberLink PowerDirector?

It has a free trial, I'm downloading now (Along with the Roxio package mentioned above).

This type looks a bit less conspicuous.
Not sure of the quality though.

^ I'm sure now there are lots of basic free or cheap video editors.
Something like Roxio or any of the "suites" is probably overkill.
Even windows live seems to have a free video editor I just noticed.

There are a few different types out there, These also look nice and don't stand out too much Contour | GPS Video Camera, HD Helmet Camera, and Video Community but based upon reviews online I went for the GoPro.

^The GoPro definitely has the runs on the board. If you know someone in the US that's traveling to LOS, the standard price at West Marine is $299.99. Every few months they drop the price by $50.

Those new Hero camera's are really slick. I'm still trying to understand how the new wifi feature works.
I almost got one for my current SA journey, but ya need two of them and a bunch of memory cards and time to edit for good results.
    I'll wait some.

I went to the Go Pro head office in the HSBC building on Friday to go and buy one. No one in the office, just an empty Go-Pro display cabinet with a load of flyers on top of it.

On the flyers they are charging 15,000bt for the Hero2 sets! That's 6k more than the states!

Also my mate ordered one last week and they sent it to his mums house by mistake.

He's just gonna tell her its an early Christmas present.

When you say 'easy' do you mean, really easy, like no frills basic easy..?

Windows Movie Maker.. the easiest by far. If you run XP or Vista you will have it already installed on your computer otherwise... follow these instructions...

here's the dl link Download: Windows Movie Maker 2.6 - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

The Hero 3 was just announced- look for some excellent blow-out prices on the Hero 2 soon.
