^ Yes Marmite,
That is a bargain for a Ducati, and they're only available for sale in SE Asia.
But, I don't have 400k...
The baby ninja 250 really does represent one of the best values of motorcycles out there in more ways than one.
You could easily resell a lightly used one for 100k. In fact I might buy it off ya because I'm considering one as a second bike. Just because it is a really easy, very economical, and cheap bike.
Yet on the other hand if real motorcycle dude image isn't a concern, I might consider a Honda PCX scooter. As far as utility its really hard to beat. IMO its one of the coolest scooters made.
^ do you reckon the 250 is okay for a 33kms commute on the ringroad?
Just go for the 650, the little 250 is a complete dog under 9000rpm. Most need to change the gearing just to cruise. Not as many buyers of used ones now either due to the market, and you're gonna want a lot more power, very soon.
Think the rear wheel HP is around 26HP compared to around 70HP for the 650.

The Honda CBR250 is supposedly a better bike in 'real life'. It'll certainly be made better. Both are a wee bit small though for a man-sized person.
The CBR250 is interesting as its a brand new model. Personally I wouldn't want to be the guinea pig. The myth of Honda being better quality is just that a myth. Just look at all the problems owners of CBR150's are having. Hopefully the cbr250 will be better. Its just an illusion to think Hondas dont have their issues.
I've got over 70k hard miles on Thai built KLR650 (a bike that's been in production since 1987) parked in AR. Its good to go another 70k at least. The baby ninja has been in production for many years and has very loyal following all around the world. Kawasaki builds some excellent bikes.
The baby ninja is just about the perfect little city commuter bike, but people also use them for touring. Of course it doesn't have the power of the 650, but neither will the 650 get over 80mpg.
It is a good choice for an economical city bike, and the bike has been in production a long time. They sell lots of them all around the world. If I lived in bkk I'd seriously consider one for commuting and taking trips to Kachanaburi or wherever.
The quality and finish of the CBR vs the Ninja is very easily seen, so it may be a myth to you, but normal people can see it.Originally Posted by Mr Earl
It sounds like you want a real motorcycle, BB- there's nothing wrong with a 250, but unless you have a second, larger bike (like Earl) you will out-grow it quickly and will probably want something else in short order. The 650 is a great entry-level bike for a new rider, and it will keep you happy for years.
As far as low-level Ducatis go, your money is much better spent on the Ninja than the little Monster- while it will sound great and has more poser value, it's a bit of a dog relative to its displacement- if you were looking at higher-end Ducatis (big $) it's a much different story, of course, but their bottom-end is really nothing compared to what you can get from Japan for much less money.
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

^ I'm starting to think this way too - I'm still not keen to be zooming around the big roads on a 250, I'd prefer the extra power/torque/size of the 650.
Well if your gonna buy a penile extension, might as well go for a big one, whats the difference in top end an 0-60 BETWEEN THE 250 AND 650?
^ I don't know, and it's not that important to me.
I imagine a 250 does about 90mph whereas the 650 would be around 130 or a tad more - maybe they are restricted, etc. 0-60 might not be that different due to the light weight of the 250. I was thinking that torque/acceleration between 40mph to 90mph should be very significantly different and useful on the ringroad. I don't think this particular 650 is set up to be aggressively fast - other 600s like an R6 are much much quicker, as far as my limited knowledge goes...
It's the size/stance on the road and comfort issues when going around the ringroad at 80-100kph and you're going past trucks as minivans scream past you that I'm mostly thinking about.
Cycling should be banned!!!
Top speed doesn't mean much- acceleration does.
You want to be able to effortlessly pass any cars/trucks/SUVs on the road when you ride a motorcycle- while excess speed can certainly get you into trouble, acceleration will often get you out of it- with a 250cc, you'll be at the mercy of a turbo pick-up truck, which can overtake you without a problem- with the 650cc bike, you will be able to leave it in the dust if necessary. If you're going to ride on crowded roads, a slow bike gives up one of your main weapons for staying safe.
You could pick up a nice 2nd hand CB400 for about 150k - probably better/as good as the current Kwaka 650s available here in some respects.
^ yep, that's not a bad idea; but it doesn't have the sex appeal. I want to be happ, have something to polish and cherish, something loveable, unlike Mrs Boo...
Interesting comparison between the 250 and 650 on this thread; most folks reckon the 650 is better at 80mph on the faster roads which is one of the areas I'm thinking most about.

& a funny and quite badly written comparison/review of the 2012 bikes:
2012 Ninja 250 vs 2012 Ninja 650 - Sport Street Motorcycles | Kawasaki Ninja Motorcycles
So, the 250 does 130kph in Bangkok... though it was a bit downhill.
