It all depends if you don't know how to drive defensively at all times and aggressively at junctions,
Farangs when they see 6 Thais on a bike, think it's stupid, cruel and uncalled for. But has anyone ever seen these involved in a crash? no, because they don't exceed 30 mph,

Everything is wrong on the Thai roads, from how easy it is for them to pass there test, to Mai pen rai about them driving the wrong way up the hard shoulder or anywhere for that matter, signals should be ignored too.

If you are a green farrang and new to a moped, the results are catastrophic, and that's without adding a couple of beers

It seems like you belong in a western nanny state

    Good thread this.
In cambodia I wear a helmet about the half the time in town.
But it is a $5 bali bought german afrika corp job-completely useless.
On the open road i wear a slightly better $12 helmet but I always wear shoes and gloves and a cravat.
    How are those fatality figures?
Over 300 dead in seven days of the holiday.
    In australia its maybe thirty.
And i always ride with the kid on the front, not the back-much safer.

Helmets dont do fuck all for your body. Most bike deaths are from internal bleeding.

And by the way... you live in a nanny state

Anyway, if fuk ups like Socal recon a head injury is top fun then just keep riding without a helmet and consider it a nanny state law.

I always wear a helmet having seen the effects of people coming down on their heads (brains in the road is not a pleasant sight)- however, since I now live in Thailand and my medical coverage and costs don't really change much (and liability isn't as much of an issue as in the States where I'm from) no matter how many people eat it on the road, don't wear a helmet if it makes you happy- I just don't want to be the one who runs you over as that will fuck up my whole day.

And for the dummies that say helmets are worthless (and, again, if it's your choice not to wear one, that's fine, but don't talk shit to justify it)- OK, I'm gonna hit you in the head with a baseball bat- would you prefer to wear a helmet or just take it directly to the skull?
There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

most of the thin plastic helmets people wear in thailand are in-effective. just having a plastic shell on your head does not make you "safe" or even necessarily "safer". situational awareness, driving for the conditions and paying attention will go a lot further towards keeping you out of the accident that the helmet probably won't help you with. but if it's your turn to crash, it's your turn. up to you. if you want to wear a helmet, do so. if other people don't, they aren't necessarily idiots. while you are cruising down the road self-righteously wearing your helmet and stewing your brain over people you don't see who aren't helmeted, you aren't convincing them of anything. cool your heart maybe...

FFS I continue to be amazed by the number of people who think that , a helmet less accident only affects one person .

Not everything is "black and white", "one size fits all" for all situations.

For example. The bulk of riders in my area are puttering around at 40kph on a Fino or some other 110cc scooter/bike. The thin crappy helmets are more than adequate in this situation.

I have two helmets. A thin, light crap one for the low speed 5 minute jaunt to work and back ... and for popping down to the shops etc.

Then I have a decent full face one for long high speed trips up to Patters or Bangkok.

Which is a problem for Thais and pissed up tourists.
You can use logic to justify anything. That's its power. It’s also its flaw.

Most Thais are well aware of their situation. If they wernt , they couldnt drive so fast without getting in lots of accidents. Fuck the statistics, they dont mean anything because there is waaay more motorcycles in Thailand.

Most western people are just too bad at driving to handle the speed of Thai roads so thats why they bitch about it.

No mate. "Speed of Thai roads"? You're kidding me. Most riders/drivers around are dragging their arses.

What Western people aren't used to is the carelessness, disregard of road rules and general stupidity of Thai drivers/riders. They need to drive much more defensively than in the West ... be paranoid ... and don't trust anyone.

"Have a green light?" "Safe to drive/ride through them?" Not as far as I'm concerned. Not after getting side slammed on my bike by a Thai fuckwit going through a red light in the early days of my riding here.

I have two helmets I use now. A Real open face model for popping to the shop etc.. and a new Shark Evoline 2 for proper rides and any time I might be driving fast. Why would you not wear a helmet at all, I don't understand, do you want to die?

I wasn't referring exclusively to Americans.

Apart from the occasional young Thai hoon ... they do drag their arses. 30-40 k's most of the time. I usually do about 60kph on suburban streets ... which is the norm in Oz.

    Don't be a drama queen.
