    Visa run to Penang, Malaysia

In Penang at the moment for 4 days on a visa run.

It's pretty fucking hot here , more so than Bangkok but at least I've got an air con room now - last night was with a fan and hungry mosqutoes - kunts must have bitten me about 50 times! (forgot to bring repellent - dor..!)

Can't say I'd want to live here - seems to be men only - not sure where the women are...

Hopefully get my passport back tomorrow with a nice double Tourist Visa - then back to BK on thursday.

    Maybe do Vietnam next time...

As you can see in this picture there is a lot of oppurtunity to get building work in Penang, the place is falling apart.

Beware the local drug dealers who also moonlight as rickshaw drivers.

That tall thing is the Komtar Complex, shopping and office buildings. The tallest building in Penang.

The Health spas are actually hoe houses, the gals sit on side of the room and you sit on the other side and choose your companion for an hour, it's all quite depressing really, plus most are as ugly as sin so you got to be well pissed up before you go in there

Yes, Aging One is right - it's the Komtar Complex - supposedly government offices.

The bottom 3 levels consist of a 1970's council estate style shopping centre - all a bit grim really. The public toilets there are 0.2 Ringgit so that's about 1/2 Baht cheaper than Thailand - good to be able to save a little here.

The bus station is in the basement of this building , there's also a KFC and a Mcdonalds there for the Malaysian cultural experience.

You're quite true there Dog - there are many places that could do with a lick of paint - it all seemed quite modern on arriving yesterday but a short time spent strolling around reveals the decaying nature of the place.

hold your horses there chap...! only on my second day yet.

I came via AirAsia from Bangkok - my return ticket including taxes cost 5000B

I submitted my visa application today , for a double entry Tourist Visa.
This cost 200 Ringgit (about 2000B) - I have to go back tomorrow afternoon to hopefully collect.

    Flight took 1 1/2 hours.

I got a taxi from the 'backpacker' area of Lebuh Chulia street to the consulate - cost 12 MR (120B) - one way.

I also got a taxi from the airport to the centre of Georgetown - 38 MR (380B) - there is a bus but I couldn't be arsed looking for it.

there's also a nice hill that overlooks Penang - surprisingly it's called Penang Hill - a long climb on a funicular railway - definitely worth the view.

Overall the place is a bit of a shitehole in my opinion - it's good to see different places though I reckon.

Not too bothered about that sort of nonsense on this trip - went to Pattaya for a couple of days before coming here.

The Dog's right - the women aren't too hot - there seem to be quite a few ladyboys around though - guess this is what happens when there is state sponsored sexual repression.

There's shit loads of Indians here - they seem to have the taxi business sown up.

A lot of Chinese as well - seems like about 1/3rd of each (ie:Malay, Indian and Chinese people)

found a good Mexican restaurant though!

I was in Penang for four days in January getting my non-B. CE, I'm shocked you found a room with air-con. I didn't think they existed! And there's only one place on Chulia Street (that I know of) that has hot water. Penang is hotter than hell - much more so than in LOS.

    Quote Originally Posted by colourful-era

Did the same thing. Did they spray you before you got off the plane? They sprayed all the passengers on my flight with some shit -- no clue as to what it was.

I also got a taxi from the airport to the centre of Georgetown - 38 MR (380B) - there is a bus but I couldn't be arsed looking for it.
Start taking buses, unless you like spending all that money. The buses are only about 1 ringgit each - and not too difficult to figure out. Just look at the stops listed in the front of each bus, and make sure they're going the right direction.

there's also a nice hill that overlooks Penang - surprisingly it's called Penang Hill - a long climb on a funicular railway - definitely worth the view.
Yeah, that's pretty much all that's up there, though. That, a few monkeys, and an Arab temple.

Overall the place is a bit of a shitehole in my opinion - it's good to see different places though I reckon.
I thought that as well. It got better the longer I stayed there, but it's still a shithole. But here are a few things I enjoyed:

    1. Little India. This is a must. Just keep walking down Chulia Street to the end and you'll eventually hit it (or take a taxi). Be sure to go into a restaurant that requires you to eat with your hands - good stuff. You can get a 4-course meal for like 3 bucks. I think that's all I ate while I was there!

    2. Batu Ferringhi - Okay, the beach sucks, and you can't swim there, but there are tons of night markets here and hawker food as well. DVDs are only about 40 baht each, if you're into that.

    3. Chinese Temple (forget the whole name) This is pretty cool, too, if you can stand the onslaught of beggars as you walk in.

I'll try to post some pics when I get home tonight.
