Brown Kukri Snake – Non Venomous – Not Dangerous

Kukri Snake - Non Venomous - Not Dangerous

Oligodon purpurascens (Brown Kukri Snake)
Thais say: (ngoo kut )
Length: average just under 1 meter (about 37 inches)
Range: All over Thailand. Brown Kukri snakes were once thought to be native to only the southernmost Thailand provinces, however J. Bulian has found one in Pattaya and there have been others discovered farther in the northeast. Assume the Brown Kukri’s habitat is all over Thailand.
Habitat: These snakes prefer life in the forest and can be found at great elevations – about 1 mile high (1,600 meters). I have received numerous requests to identify this snake from readers who found them close to or inside their homes as well. The habitat is wide and varied for this species. Regardless where they are found, they enjoy living under brush, wood, rocks, and thick flora.
Active Time? Nocturnal, active at night and in the early morning as the sun rises.
Food: Frogs, lizards.
Defensive Behavior: If the brown kukris are bothered enough they will roll their body to the side and lift up their tail – perhaps to present it as a place to attack – leaving the mouth free to strike when the aggressor does go for the tail.
Venom Toxicity: No venom.
Offspring: Nothing known.
Notes: Though this snake is not venomous, it is keen to bite and can inflict deep wounds due to it’s large, curved teeth and strong bite. Michael Cota, researcher, says, “Appears that it might be an evolutionary link on the way to being venomous, since it is the only snake that I can think of that has “fangs” (enlarged pair of teeth), but no venom delivery system or ducts to the teeth. They are not dangerous, but will give you quite a bloody bite that takes a long time to heal. What makes them so difficult is that their head is not distinct; therefore, it is extremely difficult to grab behind the head and keep proper control of it. It manoeuvres it head around on your grip and then manoeuvres it teeth to bite/slash.”
You’ll need a tetatus shot if you are bitten, as with all snakes as a precaution.
Kukris are common and you might see one in Thailand if you live here.

King Cobra – Largest Venomous Snake in World

Ophiophagus hannah. Very deadly. Grows almost to 6m. Eats other snakes primarily. If bitten, may die within 10-20 minutes.

Thais say: WING! (run!) lol. Thai language sounds like Ngoo how chang, or ngoo chong ahng. There are many names for this snake.
Length: Max length about 5.8 meters. The presenter at the Saovabha Snake Farm in Bangkok said the largest king was caught in Nakhon si Thammarat in Thailand’s south.
Range: All over Thailand and most of southeast Asia.
Notes: I’ve seen just one in the wild – and that was last night. Well, two. One I saw in a park – just the tail. I’m guessing it was a 8 meter King -but stats say that’s impossible. This was the biggest King in the world I’m guessing. It was massive… A very scary site. Kings are all over Thailand and can be found anywhere near houses, or really – anywhere. They are tremendously strong and smart animals. Please give the snake a large space and do not poke it with a stick. They are very fast too. The baby Kings can kill you too – their venom is every bit as toxic. Be careful please…
Habitat: Like many types of habitat. Dense forest near water and open grasslands. Love bamboo thickets for a nest. Ideal cover is a web of small bamboo growing about a meter high with soft bamboo leaves underneath. The King I found last night was up a limestone mountain about 100 meters vertically. In Thailand they are often found wherever Rat Snakes might be found since it’s their principle diet.
The guys at the cobra show find the Kings under palm branches in palm plantations. They lift up one end and throw it down – or smack it with sticks and sometimes Kings jump out. What a living, eh?
Active Time? The snake is mainly diurnal – found active during the daytime, but also at night.
Food: Other snakes – mostly the rat snakes. Occasionally they’ll eat other King Cobras, pythons, lizards, birds, rodents. I saw a 5m King attempting to eat a 2.5m reticulated python. The King appeared intimidated by the strength of the python – it’s no pushover. Here is a photo of a 3 meter king eating a 2 meter red tailed racer snake.

Me too, but without knowledge of what type of snake your dealing with and kids in the same area in his situation I guess I'd be wanting to 'off' it at the first opportunity.

Luckily however I have had a lot of snakes as pets or part time guests in the UK as my mate owned a reptile shop, so I have a fair knowledge of what I'm dealing with and how to approach and handle the snake.

But in slaps case better to be safe than sorry, if he couldn't quickly and easily identify it as a non-venomous type.

STS, if you want to dissuade snakes of various varieties and reduce the anxiety load regarding the safety of your little princess, then I suggest you hie yourself off to the nearest shop that sells agricultural products to your neighbours (farmers aren't they?). There you should find that they sell Sulphur, which after purchase should be sprinkled in a trail around your abode. This will have a two fold effect in that snakes do not like it and will avoid your mansion like the plague, and the second effect will be a significant lightening of the daily wash load as there won't be the same number of skid marked undies in it! The cost of the excercise should be no more than 100 baht for sulphur and peace of mind which is priceless.
