    6months-1year in thailand

Hi all, been reading the forums for awhile, while planning my vacation. Just a few questions, that i havent seemed to be able to find an answer to. 1 how hard is it to find a 2+ month rental, looking around the krabi area, seems to have the beaches, and some night life that i am looking for. 2 Trying to plan a budget, but i have seen numbers all over the place, is it possible to live reasonably well for around 1500 baht a day, food, accomadation, a few drinks, general fun stuff(bar girls not included in budget, that is a seperate budget). By reasonably well, i mean something in between backpacker and high end resort, i dont mind roughing it, sorta, but im not into sharing a dorm with a bunch of people.

Also, if anyone has some ideas on places to visit, nice beaches, not totally expensive (see planned budget above) some night life, i would love to hear them. So far, i think i will be heading to southern thailand, but it is all open to change, all i have planned so far is landing in bangcock nov 24, from there, my plans are totally open.

PS, is it alot more room wise for a single traveler, would i be better off lokking for someone to split room costs in the places i visit

    Thanks in advance

Your budget is vey very low if you expect to have fun. You are coming in high season. It can be done, but whats the point of pinching pennies of a holiday.

    ^ Agree !!!
If spending time in tourist spots you might want to double that amount.

Thanks aging, i noticed i am arriving in high season, but will be there a minimum of 6 months, so i figure at some point i will hit low season. I should probablly add some detail, a place to live, a meal or 2 out each day, a few beers, the rest of my time, i am pretty happy crashed on a beach. I estimated the 1500 per day as equaling $1500 canadian a month, which i can easily live on here, have fun, and do things i want to. Im not really planning this as a ``vacation`` per se where i do all the touristy stuff, its more a go live in another country and semi live as the locals do, minus the going to work everyday thing. Thanks again

agree with references above about your budget being lower than what would probably be needed. Try itemizing on a daily basis. for example:

    - lodging 850 baht
    - 2 meals [at] 250 baht each 500 baht
    - water 100 baht
    - transportation 150 baht
    - daily fruit 50 baht
    - beer/drinks/entertainment 1,000 baht
    - massage 2 times a week 700 baht
    sub total 3,350 baht
    - personal hygine items 100 baht
    - lady drinks xxxx baht
    - female companionship xxxx baht
    - touring around xxxx baht
    - U fill in the blanks and cost

Thanks all, so it looks like my largest outlay of money will be beer and entertainment, along with lodging, i was kind of hoping to rent a place by the month or a few months at a time which i felt would really drop the price per month. Is this a wise, valid idea, or should i just decide to rent by the day, or week, and up my budget accordingly. if it is going to cost me more to live in thailand than it does to live in canada, i wish i would have known that before i booked the ticket

Save yourself all the hassle and just send her the coin to apply for a Canadian Tourist Visa.

I doubt you will find monthly accommodation on the beaches here. Sure you can stay in a non air hut, that is a 20 minute walk to the beach on the cheap. Thailand is not nearly as cheap as years ago. Add to that a baht that is falling straight down. The odds are by the time you get here the baht dollar rate will be around 30 to 1.

Living with a roomie, cooking at home, dinner out maybe 3-4 times a week, and hitting the pub one night on the weekend, i easily get by on $1500-2000 a month so 60 000 baht roughly

That includes gas, insurance, and elec, internet etc

doing calculations from other sites as well as this one, i always thought 50 000 baht to live for a month, was living pretty well, if it isnt, i would really love to have the pensions, jobs, or whatever that you lot that all live there and raise families have

50K a month is fine to LIVE in Thailand if you live in the boonies because you can rent a house for 3000 baht per month.
You are not talking about living here, you are talking about an extended holiday in a tourist area

In short its the only way to go as your living costs drop dramatically.

Krabi in the high season is quite expensive as far as daily rentals go but you can still get a semi decent guesthouse further up the road but you need to hunt them down and check around.

I suggest you buy yourself a Lonely Planet guide book as they provide a good low down on budget decent digs. Some of these guys here will laugh at that but if your free lancing its the only way to go.

You will be able to get a good monthly rental once you get yourself sorted, definitely go for that and you will have a base.

Plenty of cheap good quality Thai restaurants around, find out where the locals eat and go there, 100 baht or less for a good meal. Cheap beer as well.

Stay away from the tourist places and your money will last for ages, start playing with the trollups and the sky's the limit, becareful , pace yourself with the girls and the piss and you will have a great time.

    Cheers

PS If you rent a car for the month you can tour Southern Thailand, heaps of cheap good quality hotels once you get away from the tourist places.

A car will be around 600 a day if you rent for the month.

Consider it as its a brilliant way to go.
