    Cost of living in Thailand

Please feel free to add to this thread cost of anything in Thailand whether it be food, beer, rent, land costs, house building cost etc

Of course rural living is cheaper than living in the heart of Bangkok. Ans since I like cheap, lets look at some rural Isaan costs for living.

Say I want to live cheap and enjoy the fresh air? I might consider going to Korat, or Lopburi, or Angthong or Sisaket or some other place in Isaan.

What will I pay for a place to rest my head at night?

A furnished single room w/ toilet no air - approx. 1000 baht / month

A furnished single room w/ toilet and air - approx. 2000 baht / month

    3 bedroom unfurnished townhouse - approx. 2500 baht /month

Single Thai style 3 bedroom detached house - 3500 baht / month
Although I have a friend in Petchabun that pays 2000 baht a month for a nice 3 bedroom house.

Single farang style house - 5000 baht per month

Very grateful for this thread, since I'm moving to LOS this autumn.

If I may ask a question or two:

    For comparison sakes:
What would be the rent on a 2-bedroom furnished house, with a/c? (I'm thinking a small city or big town in Isaan or north around CR.)
What would be the rent on a 2-bedroom furnished city condo in CM, Udon or Ubon or KK? (I imagine the sky's the limit here.)

Bout 2000 (low end) baht per month (includes no utilities). The closer you get to the city center, the more expensive.

Suggest it would make sense to divide your post into which things cost more and which things cost less here than they do in the UK or the USA. Entertainment (including sex) housing, public transportation, food, energy are among the things that cost less. Buying a new or used car, good western food, computers, and English language books are among the things that cost more.
Trying to figure the exact prices of everything will not work for obvious reasons.

A problem for us that live in a village with no phone lines. Have to use a CDMA or satellite connection. Monthly cost for CDMA, 800 baht. Satellite, 1,500 - 8,000 depending on speed.

Maybe it is the farang price?

I pay less than that in Bangers - 5 k a month for a 3 bedroom 2 bath town home.

When you are cheap like me, you can sniff out a bargain.

I like to use those machines that are dotted around the place, the ones that UV and filter. 1 baht per litre and I reuse a bunch of those 6 litre branded water bottles to hold it in. Cost about 100 baht a month for nice tasting water.

Cant drink the stuff in the 12 and 20 litre cans. I'm sure I can taste mud in it!

I pay 4000 per month for a brand new unfurnished 2 bed one bath house with air and hot water shower. To be honest the place is pretty crap, the build quality is pitiful, but there wasn't much choice around here.

You live in Rangsit, not Bangkok. Where is live is much nicer, so that's why it costs a bit more.

This is where Thailand is expensive vis a vis wages earned (in Thailand).

In Yankers I pay $30 a month for cable TV with Internet that actually works every day ([at] 10MBs).

A lot of stuff is cheap in Thailand, if you want to live like a Thai. Rice can't be all that nutritious though.

Petrol here is $2.40 a gallon and motor oil is $2. Way cheaper than Thailand.

A used car costs about 5-10 times more in Thailand.

Even that made-in-Asia street stall clothing is cheaper here.

Rent in LoS is cheap and it should be cause you'll (on average) be living in what's classified here as a ghetto, full of spitters and screamers. And in many Thai locations a drop of rain lands on the city and the power goes out for 6 hours.

All and all life for me is cheaper here in the US believe it or not, and much cleaner and safer. Of course the US is a big country so any environment is possible.

Sorry to be little off topic.

    Northern Suphanburi:

Electric running one A/C right now ~ 1K baht per month
TOT land-line phone with ''high speed'' internet ~ 1K Baht per month. Way cheaper than the states.
Case of Chang Beer ~ 400 baht from my local retailer. Ferget Tescos...

Have no idea what rents are but one thing that's nice is very limited or no double-pricing. I've strolled into all kinds of shops with the missus and/or contractors and we get the ''real'' price. From what I gather, it's yáll who live in the Farang-infested areas of LOS who get this double-pricing thing.

Prioritize! Need to cut back on these unnecessary items so you will have more for the bare necessities.
