Schwab Bank Free ATM Withdrawals - Ahhhhhh yes, I am a cheapskate

I am very happy with my new Schwab Bank account. If you want to avoid the 150 baht fee plus what your bank is charging you, then I suggest you set one up.

Pulled out money last week and the 150 baht charge showed up on the screen, but no worries as Scwhab refunded it back to me 3 days later!!!

    Screw these greedy Thai bankers!!!!

I have heard good things about that from another poster, Venturalaw I think, but my bank has no charge and I transfer with my ATM/CHECK CARD from US to SBC and get a good exchange rate and no fees and because I was over 55 when I opened my bank account in the states I pay nothing for the account nor any thing for any checks.

Sure the Thai banks are quite happy with the 150Bt they get from Schwab.
Also since Schwab are a bank I imagine they will try and get it back several times over - on the x-rate, on commission for other products, on account charges, etc etc. Anyway I hate the fee as much because it involves me being ripped off as that it's just a fee I don't want to pay.

Better than use Schwab is to withdraw at Aeon ATMs in Bangkok. No 150Bt from this Singaporean bank, branches in many Big-C, Tesco-Lotus etc.

Aeon will get the fee that every home bank pays for the ATM usage anyway increasing their profit and hopefully allowing them to expand, greedy thai banks get sod all. Much better outcome. Anone know if Aeon has a machine close to Khao San? If so, could do some promotion on other forums with it's location to deprive the greedy ones of a few rip-off-fees.

I saw this information on the Charles Schwab Bank website for both savings and checking accounts. I'm also looking for a way to avoid these fees when I'm in another country.

"We do not charge any fees for use of any ATM. If you use a machine that is not a Schwab Bank ATM, you may be charged a fee by the ATM operator or any network used. This may include a fee for a balance inquiry even if you do not complete a withdrawal or other monetary transaction. We offer a rebate on these fees assessed by others: For Interest Checking, Regular Checking, and Basic Checking up to first 6 transactions not to exceed $9.00 per statement period. Schwab Bank reserves the right to discontinue or modify the ATM Fee Rebate program at any time. Please see your Schwab Bank Deposit Account Pricing Guide for details"

Fine, they are not getting you on the x-rate right now.

    But
    A. you are not succeeding in screwing the thai bankers.
All talk no .... (how does that end?). If you want to screw the Thai bwankers, use Aeon (with your schwab card if you like)

    B. Schwab are a bank therfore they'll get their pennies back with mega interest somehow - at least that's mmy impression of banks.

Only 150 baht of that was a Thailand charge. I am sure the rest is the 1% foriegn exchange fee imposed by Visa. Unlike most other US banks, Schwab does not tack on another 2% and even better appears to rebate the fee.

It's on the application form. Also I spoke to them on their 1 800 number and they confirmed it. Maybe it applies to people opening acccounts from overseas.

I am looking for a bank in the US, preferably the Seattle area, that I can open an account with online. So far I have not found one that does not require a US driver's license.
