Although there are certainly things in Thailand that are negative (expecially for falongs), there are also things that I personally love about Thailand.
1) The warm/hot weather (I love hot weather).
2) Children who respectfully wai their teachers/parents/elders.
3) Going to the morning market and buying and eating warm kanom kok.
4) The sound of Buddhists monks chanting (morning, noon, or night)
5) The smell of gaeng keal wan cooking.
6) The smiles and laughter of Thais at family get-togethers.
7) The gracious hospitality offered to you, a falong, when you first meet Thai friends of the family.
8) The child-like qualities of innocence you find in Thais of all ages as they encounter something they like.
9) The variety and quality of soi food.
10) The raw fury of a tropical thunderstorm as the rain pounds a metal roof (including the fleeting fear of enormous thunderclaps and lightening).
11) The ingenuity of the Thai people as they make do with what they have.
12) The loving indulgence of Thai parents as they buy things for their children that they really can't afford.
13) The Thai belief of the spirit world.
14) The Thai respect for their dead ancesters.
Of course, Thais are individuals and any generalities I've mentioned, are only that, generalities. Like any country there are plenty of dysfunctional people about, but I find they are the exception, not the rule.
I'm sure many of you here on TD have your own list of things you love about Thailand (otherwise why would you live here or vacation here).
Cheers,
RickThai
