    What I Love About Thailand

Although there are certainly things in Thailand that are negative (expecially for falongs), there are also things that I personally love about Thailand.

    1) The warm/hot weather (I love hot weather).
    2) Children who respectfully wai their teachers/parents/elders.
    3) Going to the morning market and buying and eating warm kanom kok.
    4) The sound of Buddhists monks chanting (morning, noon, or night)
    5) The smell of gaeng keal wan cooking.
    6) The smiles and laughter of Thais at family get-togethers.
    7) The gracious hospitality offered to you, a falong, when you first meet Thai friends of the family.
    8) The child-like qualities of innocence you find in Thais of all ages as they encounter something they like.
    9) The variety and quality of soi food.
    10) The raw fury of a tropical thunderstorm as the rain pounds a metal roof (including the fleeting fear of enormous thunderclaps and lightening).
    11) The ingenuity of the Thai people as they make do with what they have.
    12) The loving indulgence of Thai parents as they buy things for their children that they really can't afford.
    13) The Thai belief of the spirit world.
    14) The Thai respect for their dead ancesters.

Of course, Thais are individuals and any generalities I've mentioned, are only that, generalities. Like any country there are plenty of dysfunctional people about, but I find they are the exception, not the rule.

I'm sure many of you here on TD have your own list of things you love about Thailand (otherwise why would you live here or vacation here).

    Cheers,

    RickThai

Reason why I love Thailand? It's so screwed up with one of the world's most deceptive and devious people that it makes me feel content to live in the UK with all its demerits. No mean feat that.

UK is a shithole and offers only an existence and no quality of life - I am originally from the UK last time I was back I thought I was in a third world Chav heaven. Awful!!

Australia kicks UK's ass all day long and Thailand is even better than Oz.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Everytime i go back the UK, i count the minutes and seconds until i am back on the plane out of the place.

I have a long trip back there in 3 weeks and think i may have to contact the Samaritans.

Depends on where you live (or visit) in each country. I left the UK for good in 1975 as it was starting to become a shithole even then, and I was being taxed out of existence for working hard and making a good living.

I've only been back once a decade since and have generally avoided the UK per se, as my brother lives in rural Devon in an area which has long since been priced well out of reach for most people. The big old country houses are nice and the local pub (which was originally build in the 13th century) is full of white people who all sound like Bertie Wooster or his Aunt Agatha....and everyone seems to have attended Eton and Oxford.

It's not exactly chav country but still part of the UK, at least for now. Strangely, most of the locals drive old beat-up cars, with prestigeous branding. This includes my brother...who also tolerates plumbing installed during the mid Victorian era. It's all part of that quaint British eccentricity which established itself during colonial times..especially in India. Modern plumbing and mass produced cars are frowned upon in certain circles.

Been to Australia but spent all my time there in the great Victoria desert, so if I was to judge Australia by that standard, even Wolverhampton would could come out looking pretty good.

I don't find the Thai's to be quite as unmanageable as The Gent but they certainly do present challenges at times...such as when a simple yes or no answer is required. Apart from that, Thailand is a very nice place to hang out, but one should always be prepared to move fairly quickly, because it is after all, managed by Thai's.

Climate wise Thailand is pretty good, except for the excessive heat and humidity during the "hot" season. Parts of Australia would be nice but then they are constantly burning the place or being flooded; or having plagues of one thing or another. The UK is generally uninhabitable climate-wise although it can be very plesant for short periods; at least south of St. Albans. If one is in a position to flee at short notice, it's not too bad for part of the year.

For climate, I would rate Hawaii as the best all round....of all the places I've spend more than a weekend in....but then you have volcanoes, earthquakes and the threat of 100ft tsunamies..... lots of trade-offs.....

    ^

SW ......big, very hot and mostly red dirt. Not even abbos when I visited in the 60ies. There was a specialized military training range back then....so a few white men at times....so why would any of that exclude me from " knowing much about OZ"???

To describe Britain as a shithole and scarcely habitable because of the weather is absurd.

Only about 8% is actually built upon. There are vast tracts accessible to all which will never be developed. It is an organised society which respects the rule of law. The climate is changeable and fickle but not so much as to render it uninhabitable at any time. True, our Empire legacy and membership of the EU has led to an awful lot more coons, wogs etc but these wretches tend to cleave to certain parts of the odd city and bits of the countryside no one wants to visit.

It is a wonderful place in truth and jam packed with more cultural interest per sq. metre than the rest of Europe combined.

The rest of the world is mostly a fucking desert in comparison and only fit for tourists, coons and septics.

Thailand is just a fucking advertising campaign for the imbecilic in comparison. Which probably explains why just about every Asian, slant eyed, yellow bellied, rice gobbling git of a money laundering chicken headed bastard is buying up property in London.

In answer to the OP, I suspect that RickThai's favourite bit about Thailand is thinking he is superior to everyone else that comes here.

And you're forgetting: feeling superior to the locals as well...

But that wouldn't be very Buddhist-like, would it?

The bar of what may pertain here in the LoS is set so low it's scarcely likely anyone with even the smallest of brains would feel anything but superior.

That's part of the attraction of Asia, even the most stunted of westerners can walk tall.

Rickthais list drips with romantic nostalgia, newbie enthusiasm and childlike naivety.

It would make good copy for a tourism authority campaign.

You get a certain unsurpassed taste once they wave the cat off that was sleeping on the chopping board, or using the magic fan to wave the flies off the meat, the cook that thinks washing his hands is white mans magic and who can forget the rats as big as a Jack Russle moving like ninjas around your feet.
    Black diamonds? I shit 'em.
