Quite possibly neither. Perhaps she didn't want the kind of arsehole who thinks being told 'you're not Thai' is racist lurking around at the back of the class. I can't say I blame her.
You've got a point. He does sound like an American.
Ha! I agree with your assumption that Merkins are like that, but you're totally wrong. I'm a Brit through and through. Merkins are MUCH worse than me, believe me. I've been there 6 times? Have you?

Only because they have gone unchallengeable for centuries. The internet and the Thais being fed up with the class system is slowly but surely putting and end to their crap.

Hasn't the penny dropped yet? It isn't just the Thai, it's everybody outside of the 'civilized' world. You've been pushing this non-racist, human rights liberal fantasy now for a long time. Nobody's buying into it. They smile and use it for their own gain, then turn around and carry on regardless.

Racism is a white phobia. It's natural, part of the evolutionary survival mechanism. It ain't going away, not for thousands of years, no matter what fantasies you cling to.
Thanks for your "expert" advise, we will just have to agree to disagree on this one...

Probably - I'll see how I feel by Monday. Deffo a letter to the head of the school AFTER the g/f has been given her certificate. Lose face? I'll show them how to lose face.
    A letter.
Would that be in Thai or English?
In English of course. After all, they were putting on an English course, so why not? And it might make them take a bit of notice.

Make the lazy sods work for their money. Get some flunkey to scurry around trying to translate it.

But it would be worth paying for a translation ... No, bollocks, make the lazy Government officials do a bit of work

You seem to think that this letter isn't going to be looked at, after a minute or two they'll realize it isn't in Thai, then quickly throw it into the bin.

    If it is even opened.

    Which it probably won't.

Pointing out that an outsider isn't Thai is not racist.

It is nationalist. Thai is not a race.

Perhaps these people are racist too. You would only know for sure if they said 'you aren't Thai' to a Malay or a Lao customer.

There are plenty of ways that the UK discriminate against foreigners. Eg charge them extortionate visa fees.

Yeah, like the Thais get in free to Wat Pra Kaew, and the foreigners have to pay about 450 baht. And don't get me started on tuk-tuk drivers...

And Thais ARE a race, although many disparate ones. However, they are united in one country so I think that makes them a race.

So explain this - I, in high dudgeon after yesterday, went to the restaurant at the end of my soi to get well pissed. There's a lovely Chinese/Vietnamese waitress who speaks good English and she could see from my face I was pissed off.

She asked me what was wrong and I said that I was angry because Thais were often very racist and described the incident - she just nodded and said 'For sure'. When she came back with the beer I asked her what she meant - she said they looked down on her because she was not Thai and also 'half-half'.

Don't even pretend to me there is not innate racism in many Thais, especially Central Thais, who are the worst because they see themselves as 'purer' than other regions.

Quite right, that man, they have been easing their way into Africa for years to get a toehold near the West - and the oil.

Yup, never a truer word ...

The problem is, many of these knobs on here are on 30k salaries and 10 month contracts and are dependent on the Thai schools who milk them to death in run-down up-country schools, and won't say boo to a goose.

I'm too old for all their shit, I stand up to Thais, I tell them what I think in Thai and they don't like it AT ALL when you can give them what for in their own language. Makes them feel like they've lost face - good. Best thing that could happen - then they might learn something.

But, it will always be your fault ...

Fantasy again. The course was part of the ASEAN initiative and had to be done so Thailand could show ASEAN it was doing its bit.

Why do you always make things up and believe they are true just because you thought them?

LOL, so that makes Australians one race then, given they all share one country?

And your proof is that a 'a lovely Chinese/Vietnamese waitress who speaks good English' said it's so?

I'm surprised you've been here almost a decade and still haven't worked it out, particularly if you are as fluent in thai as you say you are. (Generally, those people who tell you how fluent they are, are not.)

If I were running a training course and someone walked in and sat at the back without registering or even asking whether I minded, I would be angry and ask them to leave. If the rant here is indicative of his behaviour when asked to leave, I'm surprised he didn't get a good slap.

People talking about being treated as 2nd class citizens probably encourage it. Move away from whoreville, dress decently, wash and speak quietly and you'll notice a difference.

Simply, it might be greatly beneficial if one lightened up on the predictable superior being/culture syndrome.....

I live well away from Bangkok centre, I ALWAYS dress smartly, get loads of repeat classes at high class venues (all Government departments with senior level management) and that's why I earned 105,800 in October and 97,400 in November? Did you? Or are you in one of those 30 grand cubbyhole in a Govt school jobs?

I suspect YOU are the whoreville inhabitant in your sleeveless Chang T shirt - you seem to know all about it.

I think Mr Fixit makes some fair points. In Asia, pretty much every country - Japan, Korea, China, think that they are superior to other Asian peoples.

But of course, it is not going to change. It has been this way for a long time.

Rather than let it upset one (and Mr Fixit does allow that) - far better to observe it, study it. Like observing a termite heap.

Recommend the book 'The Asian Mind Game - a westerner's survival guide'
