    Thai lottery tickets

So tell me, why are the Thai lottery tickets not one price for all? Are some numbers worth more in prize money or something?

We all no the Thais love to gamble, we all no Thais aren't the best at mathematics, so placing different values on different numbers would make it even harder for them, I am sure there must be a real simple reason for the different prices, but I have no idea what it could be.

Something to do with maybe have several numbers the same on the lottery ticket perhaps?

Its because they're sold in sets mate ,,, like bingo cards , well theory wise .

    ie ,, 1 set = 1 times that prize

6 sets of the same numbers = 6 times the prize for those numbers

How to Win the Thai Lottery
How to Play Thai Lottery Written by SaKdIpAt Wednesday, 31 January 2007

    http://www.winthailottery.com/how-to...i-lottery.html

The idea of lottery goes back a very long way towards ancient times. People of Thailand are very fond of being a gambler themselves. Lottery is taken very seriously in Thailand as it is the only kind of gambling allowed here in Thailand. The system is very different compared to the western world. So, here is how it goes. First, I would like to talk about the image of what a Thai lottery looks like.

As you can see, there is only one kind of lottery available, which is the top one. The other ones are recent, as I will talk about them a bit later on. This form of lottery has been used in Thailand for a long time. It is still paper-based material while many other countries have developed an electronic system to organise the lottery tickets. In Thailand, you’ll have to get lottery tickets from agents, which receive these tickets from retailers. Usually, lottery tickets are drawn twice a month, which are the first day of the month (the 1st) and the 16th. Every ticket costs 80 baht. This is the standard price. Each ticket has 2 parts, the top and the bottom part. It is not possible to buy just one part as they come in pairs. So, every ticket will still cost you 80 baht. However, if you win, your prize is doubled. Every ticket has 6 single digits, which you’re able to choose when you buy one. If for example, in England, the digits could be double digits up to 49 numbers which you would have to pick 6 numbers. However, the stake is so much more but it is much harder to win.

When the numbers are drawn live on national television, there are probably more than 20 drawn every time as they’ll have to draw all of the numbers according to the number of prize stated. Now, the prizes and amount of these lotteries are as follow

First Prize 1 number 2 million baht
Second prize 5 numbers 100000 baht
Third prize 10 numbers 40000 baht
Fourth prize 50 numbers 20000 baht
Fifth prize 100 numbers 10000 baht
Bonus prize* 2 numbers 50000 baht

    * Bonus prize is for people whose first 5 numbers are correct but the last digit is incorrect by one number above or below. (For example, if your last number is "5" you can get the bonus prize if it is a "4" or "6".

Next, I want to talk about how to watch out for a fake lottery, which could be sold to anyone. Here are the steps.

A fake lottery has characteristics as follow
    - different color from the original
    - different paper
    - no watermark

If you win a prize, you’ll have to go to the GLO (Government Lottery Office) where you will receive a cheque. However, if the prize is less than 20,000 baht, you can go to a local agent and he/she will give the money to you in cash. There is tax, which you’ll have to pay in order to get the money. The nominal rate is 50 satang (0.5 baht) for every one hundred baht. If you cash your money at a local agent, they’ll normally charge you about 2 baht for every one hundred baht.
Now, I would like to talk about the cheaper kind of lottery ticket which plays like the Irish lotto. A prize is drawn the same day as the national lottery. Here is what it looks like:

There are 3 prices of these tickets, 20, 50 and 100 baht. The first row is for 3 single digits lottery. The prize is set to a standard at 500 baht per one baht. For example, if you win the correct amount in the same order and your ticket is the 100 baht ticket, you’ll get 50,0000 for the prize. However, there’s a second Tote row, which the numbers shouldn’t have to be in order and you can also win. The prize of this tote row is 10 baht for every one baht. For this kind, there will be 4 prizes drawn every time. For the third row, you can choose 2 single digits and if you win, you’ll get 65 baht for every one baht. However, you can also choose the last row as it would be a reverse row and if you win that, you have halved the prize money.

I hope that every person who comes to Thailand they try out the Thai lottery. The chances are much better than the European and American lotteries even though the prize is much less. However, always be aware of agents who try to trick you and be aware of all kinds of theft.

I've got a theory and crunched some numbers along the lines of what the dawg has pointed out, but without knowing exactly what the 'vig' on the lottery is you can't really work it out.

What is easy to work out, is that close to crunch time, you can buy up un-popular numbers for sometimes half price if you buy a lot of them. So not only do you get a higher slice of the pool than when the equally likely popular numbers fall, but you're also getting a good price on the ticket. I'm pretty sure buying up these are a good bet, have done so, and lost, but over an insignificant sample size.

This Aussie guy who is said to be the world's biggest professional gambler, has actually bought physical newsagencies so he can print tickets off for himself when there is a jackpot or some other abnormality that tip the odds thinly in his favour.

From two-up to the Melbourne cup, Australians are clearly not shy of a bet. But could you make it your profession? Surprisingly it's not an untrodden path.

Do you fancy a bet on the Melbourne cup? Or maybe you occasionally bet on the weekend races during the season? Or perhaps you put down a few quid on your footy team when you’re confident of a win. Maybe you just enjoy taking money off your mates over a game of poker.

Some people gamble for fun and the thrill of winning; or otherwise. For some, it becomes a tragic and addictive behaviour.

For others, it becomes a profession.

In fact, Australia has a long record with professional gamblers of all kinds.

Joseph Hachem won the World Series of Poker in 2005, bagging a cool $7.5 million in prize money. Billy Argyros is another professional Australian poker player who has netted around a reported $1 million in earnings.

Still, this is peanuts compared to earnings of professional gamblers David Walsh and Zeljko Ranogajec. This dynamic duo from Tasmania has made millions, and possibly a number with even more zeros than that, from professional gambling.

Both are maths and IT geniuses, who have determined ways to play the odds, and often times, come out the winner.

David Walsh, who has since built the $175 million Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart, dropped out of University and made many millions from applying his mathematical theories at the casinos and racetracks around the world. His partner in gambling, Zeljko Ranogajec, has achieved the same.

We’re not talking small, incremental bets here either.

Ranogajec alone is estimated to account for up to 8% of Tabcorp’s $10 billion Australian betting turnover; that’s putting up to about $1 billion a year into wagers. He is considered to be the world’s biggest punter.

It is claimed, that from this $1 billion turnover, Ranogajec grosses $10 million from every one per cent of profit made. No matter which way you look at it, these are huge numbers.

One of his early wins was a $7.5 million Keno jackpot. He then began to accumulate a sizeable fortune playing blackjack at Hobart’s Wrest Point Casino. He joined forces with Walsh and another to build an empire based on professional gambling.

Neither Walsh nor Ranogajec are the type to be spotted at the races, dressed in flashy suits and ties that embrace the social side of horse racing as well as the punting.

Interestingly, both have been known to ‘play the stockmarket’, looking at the odds and behavioural patterns, and applying them the same way that their computer models have been applied to horse racing and other forms of gambling.

It is speculated that Ranogajec has tried to find a way to beat the odds of the games of lotto that so many people regularly partake in. In doing so, he has spent millions, but it seems unlikely that the ‘code’ has worked.

So, next time you wonder whether you should spend the $7.85 to buy a quick pick in current lotto draw, consider that there are others who have taken gambling to a professional level that is hard to comprehend.

this article sux btw. neither are geniuses. Hachem is an average poker player that got very lucky. A lifetime loser up until that big score.

Billy is good at making odds and crushed bookmakers in the early days of sports betting, and is a good poker player, certainly better than Hachem.

Zjelko, the lottery guy, who started out heading a blackjack counting team out of Tasmania. Now bets on anything and everything, very thin, He'd make less than 1% of what he turns over. But his turnover is massive. It was about 15% of the Aussie horse TAB pools until he left the country when the tax-man recently came knocking. It's not genius and was modelled off what the MIT blackjack guys were already doing.

why buy lottery? its just not rational to buy lottery for some wins. If you know some basic statistics, over the long term, you are sure to lose money..

unless you think of it in terms of paying for some quick thrills (entertainment)...

The Lotttery ticket sellers make their own price, when i am with the G/F. she will barter with the seller.
Fat lot of f*cking it has done because i got the tickets at a good price and never won fuc*ing nothing.
But i ALWAYS tear up the 'losing' tickets when she tells me it is a loser although i do trust her......

If you win and go to claim your prize at the office, you'll find out that Farang can only play lottery, but not legally win prizes

It is because Thais believe some numbers (and number combinations) are luckier than others, and hence these can be sold at premium. A stack of 10 or so with a "lucky number" combination can be sold at a very big mark up.

Generally yes but certainly there are rare opportunities in various lotteries that can tip the math in favour of the player. Some examples I pointed out earlier.

Probably not very shrewd of a falang to walk up to cash a lottery ticket, especially if mafia run, in the first place.

Woman we know won 4 million baht on Sunday. Found out Monday, on bus to Bangkok to collect and from there will go to the family village somewhere near Khon Kaen, they'll assist in its disposal.
Unattractive, 35, single, she'll have them crawling out from under rocks, climbing out of trees, with proposals.
Anyway, good luck to her, last 4yrs in a minimum wage job somehow saving from 7000b a month to send some home.

Prediction? Unsure, if not locked into house/property, sure the extended family will have many a cunning plan in terms of financial management and investment. 4m may not go far.
The NY party will be a big one.
