    Flood Related Thai Vocabulary

    here is a list of words relating to the floods and the precautions taken against them.


    calm – to cause to be without anxiety ทำให้ใจเย็น,ทำให้ไม่ตื่นเต้น, ทำให้สงบ

    critical – (of a bad situation) very serious or dangerous อย่างรุนแรง อย่างวิกฤต

    level – the amount of liquid that there is in a container, river, dam, etc., which can be seen by how high the liquid is ระดับ

    record – the best or most ever achieved สถิติ

    barrier – a wall, pile of sandbags, etc., that prevents water from entering สิ่งกีดขวาง

    residents – people who live in a particular area ประชาชนที่อาศัยในท้องที่

    embankment – a slope made of earth or stone that rises up from either side of a road, railway/railroad, river, etc. มูลดิน,ตลิ่งทาง

    evacuation – moving people from a place of danger to a safer place การอพยพ

    precautionary measure – an action taking to prevent something bad from happening มาตราการป้องกันล่วงหน้า

    run-off – rain, water or other liquid that runs off land into streams and rivers น้ำหลาก

    massive – very large มหาศาล

    volume – an amount of something ปริมาณ

    grip – to have a strong affect on something มีผลกระทบ

    threaten – to be likely to harm or destroy something เป็นลางร้าย

    at risk – in danger ตกอยู่ในความเสี่ยง

    inspect – to look at something carefully ตรวจสอบ

    assurance – a promise; a guarantee การรับประกัน, การรับรอง

    disaster – something very bad that happens and causes a lot of damage or kills a lot of people ความหายนะ ภัยพิบัติ

    zone – an area that has an important or typical feature; an area where a particular activity is allowed or not allowed พื้นที่, บริเวณ, เขต

    particularly – especially, or more than usual โดยเฉพาะ

    community – the people living in one particular area ชุมชน

    household – a group of people, often a family, who live together ครัวเรือน

    swamped – covered with a large amount of water ท่วม, จมอยู่ในน้ำ

    elsewhere – another place or other places ที่อื่น

    aerial – (of a photograph) from a plane or helicopter ภาพถ่ายทางอากาศ

    industrial estate – an area of land where industrial companies have their buildings นิคมอุตสาหกรรม

    deluge – a sudden flow of a large amount of water, a sudden, very heavy rainfall น้ำปริมาณมาก ฝนตกหนัก

    destructive – causing great damage or harm ซึ่งเป็นการทำลาย

    authorities – people who have the power to make decisions or enforce the law เจ้าหน้าที่ผู้มีอำนาจ

    breach – to break through or over something ข้าม, ทำให้แตก

    inundate – to flood; to submerge ท่วม, ทำให้จมลงใต้น้ำ

    reinforce – to make stronger เสริมให้แข็งแรงขึ้น

    defences – the particular structures, equipment, and people that are used for protecting a place การป้องกัน,การต้านการรุกราน


    immediately – happening right after something else with no delay; right away ทันที

    repair – to fix something that is broken or damaged ซ่อมบำรุง

    electrical appliances – instruments or tools that run on electricity เครื่องใช้ไฟฟ้า

    garment – a piece of clothing เสื้อผ้า, เครื่องแต่งกาย

    in place – prepared and ready to use เข้าที่, อยู่ในที่

    block – to stop someone/ something from moving through or along something else ปิดกั้น, กีดขวาง
    concentrate – to give most of your attention to one aim or activity เพ่งความสนใจไปยัง มุ่งไปที่

    investment – the act of investing money in something การลงทุน

    If we say [w/o any research] that only one falang in ten learns to speak Thai and that only one in ten of that one in ten learns to read Thai, then one sees why this list isn't helpful. There is no approximation of pronunciation. Which is why one can look at a wall of "Thai dictionaries" in a bookshop -- and they're all useless. One awesome on-line dictionary gives us words spoken. but if you're relying on a portable dictionary, Chris Pirazzi's is the only one I use.
    Thanks tho' -- since I can read a bit.
