    Translation Requests

I can see GoW picking up plently of repo points from this thread....

This is from the intro to a Roald Dahl short story:

    เต่าถูกนำมาจากแอฟริกาครั้งละนับพันตัว
I'm guessing at ถูกนำ meaning 'every' in some sense (passive?) but can't work out a translation. And ครั้งละนับพันตัว I think is 'in their thousands?'
Back off Margaret, you're on a sugar rush!

I chickened out - I'll wait until she's stopped cuddling the cushion and starts complaining about being hungry again.

    ถูกนำ = are brought
    ครั้งละนับพันตัว = 1000 each time

1000 turtles are brought from Africa each time.

This is from a Roald Dahl short story - it's describing flowers on a balcony.

    ..เต็มไปด้วยสีสรรพ์ของดอกไม้ที่แข่งกันบานสะพรั่ ง

I'm guessing at something like 'completely full with flowers in blossom'

But I do no understand how แข่ง is being used. Is it that the flowers are competing with each other for space?

I think they choose this word because they want people who read this can imagine how blossom flowers do.

Like you said "completely full with flowers in blossom", แข่ง will make this sentence is more more likely true.

Wow.. your Thai is pretty well!

You're very kind, but truth be known my learning is going rather slowly.

I do like my new 'learning scheme' though. I (slowly) work my through books in Thai and make notes of the new vocabularly - I find it easier to remember new words when they are part of a sentence, rather than sitting by themselves. At the moment I am reading a Roald Dahl short story about tortoises and next on the bookshelf is Moominpappa's Memoirs. I'm not 100% sure who Moominpappa was, but he must have been a pretty important person to have had his memoirs published.

    The book is titled:

    บันทึกมูมิน

"The moomins are the central characters in a series of books by Finnish writer Tove Jansson originally published in Swedish. They are a family of Scandinavian trolls who are white, round and furry in appearance, with large snouts that make them resemble hippopotamuses. The carefree and adventurous family live in their house in Moominvalley."

Skulldigger may know of them - I think that he comes from Moominvalley.

    Indeed I do.

The Moomin (or Mumin) trolls are one of Finland's greatest exports. You'll find that the memoirs of Moominpappa are a bit more philosophical and melancholy than the other Moomin books.
