Is there a secret to phoning Laos?

Trying to phone a mate but his +856 number doesn't seem to work from Thailand! At least from my mobile!

Yes & your point is, 86 is for some mobiles phone numbers.
The b/cards that I have only show up the first 2 digits.

Don't you require an exit code to call Laos from Thailand? Or maybe not.

Ummm....perhaps the same applies from mobile phones as it is in Thailand.
The receiver's number: +0 added to the prefix when calling in country, in this case Laos. And when calling from another country, exclude the zero.

Try 008 856 if from a land line. 004 856 on Dtac. 006 856 on True. 005 on AIS. You can also use 001 I think, but this is CAT and you will get a separate bill for it. I assume you have international calling turned on? Check that as well.

0086 is the international dialling code for China.
00852 is the international dialling code for Hong Kong.

It is not uncommon for people in Hong Kong who also work in HK to have a Chinese mobile, especially if they actually live in China and commute each day.

    Mobile numbers in Hong Kong start with a 9, a 6, or sometimes a 5, so a Hong Kong mobile number would be either "+852 9" or "+852 6" or ""+852 5"

China mobile numbers start with a 1. So a China Mobile number would be "+86 1"

If you think I am wrong, drop your supplier an email asking "Heh, why do you use a China mobile number" and he will tell you why.

What's the confusion here? If a number in Lao for example is 020-5692-4242 then when calling this number from abroad you simply call +856-20-5692-4242.

No special secret or technique needed, it's very straight forward. To put things basically just remove the first zero and replace is with +856.

I confirm +86 is for China.

For Hong Kong it is +852

I don't know where is your supplier from but his phone is registered in China.
