    Back to the OP.

Col. Tim Collins' follow-up by the American actually repeated 'Its hammer time' a number of times in a shouting rant-style delivery. That was the complete extent of the speech....

Also, I heard on the radio yesterday, at the commemoration of the Dambuster raids, Richard Todd, who played Guy Gibson in the eponomous 1955 film say in response to the interview asking if he knew of the raids at the time.

His response? "No, I was occupied with other things at the time".

The conversation was not expanded upon, but later in the show the interviewer researched what, exactly, Mr Todd was engaged with in 1943 at the time of the Dambuster raids. What she found out will surprise no-one familiar with the British trait of understatement, that, in fact, he was leading the planning for (and was amongst the first to land on) the DD assault.

Churchill speech related to the defense (surrender) of Britain.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."

US Army General Anthony C. McAuliffe response to German message to surrender:

"To the U.S.A. Commander of the encircled town of Bastogne.

The fortune of war is changing. This time the U.S.A. forces in and near Bastogne have been encircled by strong German armored units. More German armored units have crossed the river Our near Ortheuville, have taken Marche and reached St. Hubert by passing through Hompre-Sibret-Tillet. Libramont is in German hands.

There is only one possibility to save the encircled U.S.A. troops from total annihilation: that is the honorable surrender of the encircled town. In order to think it over a term of two hours will be granted beginning with the presentation of this note.

If this proposal should be rejected one German Artillery Corps and six heavy A. A. Battalions are ready to annihilate the U.S.A. troops in and near Bastogne. The order for firing will be given immediately after this two hours term.

All the serious civilian losses caused by this artillery fire would not correspond with the well-known American humanity.

    The German Commander."

"To the German Commander, NUTS!, The American Commander"

    Different approach. Message the same!!!
"Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect,"

From what I remember Richard Todd was part of the first wave on D-day. He was an officer in the paras and was one of the first allied soldiers to fight that day. For this reason alone he was a great man. Add to that other things he did with his life and the way he conducted himself and you have the epitomy of Englishness. A great man RIP.

^ Even funnier when they get all excited talking about their favorite football team.

    Simple little commoners.

Please,go and watch a game of Basketbounce,American Football or that stick game you play that takes 5 hours and the team wins 2-1,you know the World Series game where no other country takes part (stickball or basebat I think you call it) without consuming any alcohol. It'll be a revelation.

    alcohol free? not bloody likely.

and would the revelation you refer to be any greater than the simple recognition of how using the fucking space bar after punctuation makes your efforts at posting much easier to read and seem less a momoification, as it were?

NHL hockey is the best sport to watch and play, IMO, but the fisticuffs are on the rink, not with hooligans in the dam crowd.

If you're noticing errors with my punctuation then please learn how to use the SHIFT key at the start of a sentence.

There are very few instances of terrace hooliganism in the Premier League. We are one of the few countries in Europe which no longer fence the supporters in with barbed wire and steel.
Hockey is one of the better Canadian sports.
