The sound was recorded as having reached as far as 3000 kilometres away.

Undersea cables for telegraph had just been completed.

irregular waves were recorded as far away as Dover, England.

Thanks to the British obsession with weather, many homes had barometres, which recorded an air pressure wave that actually circled the globe 7 times!

    Great thread kingwilly.

One of my to do before I die activities (which may be my death) is to look into an active volcano crater. I came across this professional volcano photographers site a while back. Some great shots of Erta Ale in Africa.

Travel report expedition to Erta Ale volcano and Dallol volcano 2008

when I was working there, some US citizens went on a night trip, as the lava is spectacular then

I think two were killed by flying rocks, another seriously injured

no chance to dodge them in the dark!

I climbed to the edge of a volcano twice.

Peeked over at the red rocks and watched them being thrown up above the crater rim.

2 japs were killed there some months prior....apparently a fridge sized red rock fell on them.

Actually not really, a lot of trips now from anyer, and folk are staying on a nearby island, which is actually the outsde edge of the volcano, red glow and sparks can be seen all night. Climbing the actual mountain does happen but should be discouraged since explosions of football sized rocks are happening abt 3 times an hour. An australian man was killed late last year by one.

How easy is it to get to the west coast from Jakarta (without one's own car)? Is the best place for Krakatoa trips from Carita or Anyer?

Bus is possible to an Indoensian speaker or brave/resroucful backpackers or travellers, I wouldnt advise it though, more likely to be quite frustrating.

Car hire can be done with by booking through an agency that does the tours, such as I mentioned earlier. or a car hire company.

most car hire companies will charge about $35-55 per day including driver and petrol (not toll way or driver overtime fees, both are very minimal though)

I use one guy called Adrian +622132 639113 - he speaks reasonable English, he will deliver and drop off the car to your house/hotel.

Or another company that advertises in the newspapers is Nimrala +62855 1021922 or +6281890 2505 (no idea how good/bad they are)

Anyer/Carita, I imagine no real difference, I could be wrong.

Giant undersea volcano found in Sunda Trench

The Jakarta Post | Thu, 05/28/2009 7:34 PM | National
Scientists conducting oceanic survey intended to better understand the mechanics of tsunami generation has got more than they bargained for after a discovery of a previously unknown underwater volcano off the coast of Bengkulu.

The team of scientists from the Agency For the Assessment and Application Technology (BPPT), The Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI), The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, and France-based CGGVeritas and Institut de Physique du Globe (IPG) located the volcano under the Sunda Trench, west of Sumatra.

The volcano rises about 4,600 meters, with the rim 1,280 meters below the sea surface. The base ring of the volcano spans approximately 50 kilometers.

“The volcano is huge and tall. No mountain in Indonesia is this high except the Jayawijaya mountain in Papua,” a BPPT Director, Yusuf Surachman, said as quoted by Antara state news agency on Thursday.

He did not, however, get into detail regarding the volcano's activity level.

“Nevertheless, an underwater volcano is very dangerous if it erupts,” he said.

The seismic survey was conducted in the Indian Ocean off Sumatra as part of a TIDES (Tsunami Investigation – Deep Evaluation Seismic) project.

Scientists from many parts of the world have been conducting researches following the 2004 Tsunami disaster in Aceh and other major earthquakes that plague the country. (adh)

Yes, it is clearly visible on Google Maps, satellite view, about 200 miles west-south-west of Bengkulu, Sumatra. The map has surely not been updated so soon? There are three other large seamounts visible to the south of Sumatra also. During the 2004 tsunami seaquake, the whole island of Sumatra shifted about 100 metres towards Antarctica, so it shows the unbelievable forces at work in the earth's crust!

    Yikes!

Sounds rather ominous. I wonder how active it is?

Just for a matter of record I was back there again last weekend, didnt really bother with too many photos and the sky was overcast, and the volcano was much less active. (but still plenty of smoke coming out of the ground and volcano vent.

This time I took a couple of speed boats (not cheap, about 4,250,000 IDR per boat which is about $450) each speed boat can take up to 8 people. The trip from Tanjung Lesung took about 1.5 hours, which is much faster than the 4 hour trip on the fishing boat.

We also went snorkeling on the edges of the outer volcano island remenants, lovely corals and plenty of small fish.
Lunch was included on the boats, but they didnt have any beer not even for sale.

On the way back we encountered 3 separate pods of dolphins (approx 5-12 animals per pod), stopped the boat while they played around us, one pod even had a baby with them.

    great stuff.

Good shots Willy...Me along with my ex and youngest son did the trip over to Anak Krakatau on a similar fishing boat. It was about 15 years ago and was supposedly closed to the public at the time as an American tourist had been hit and killed when the volcano blew a plug of rock as it regularly did. We bribed the captain and chugged across. The sides were lined with scoria and the volcano was huffin and puffin several times on the way over. When we had scaled about 2/3 of the ascent it blew another plug of soot and black sandy like stuff and we all bloody near broke our legs trying to sprint back down....except my crazy ex..who climbed up into the black cloud to get a few shots.....of course all you could see in the developed film was black course cloud....The last clear shot we got was a back picture of my son looking up the last 80 odd metres to the crater wearing a Pink Floyd t shirt with 'Wish you were Here' across the back....almost a post card shot

    Actually, they did.
