He can arrange a pick up from the airport (local in sumatra, lampung, but perhaps even Jakarta)
He arranged us a car and driver for the day (450,000 rupiah including petrol) and the driver was GOOD, as opposed to other nutcase drivers I've had. and the car was WELL MAINTAINED as opposed to other car rentals i've had.
He arranged the Krakatoa trip, speed boat or fishing boat.
I'm sure that every resort in the area could do this also, but sometimes it's nice to have a direct number.

Thanks for this... a great post and pics.
I love Indo and my favourite trip was on a small wooden boat from Lombok down to Komodo where dragons dwell.
If it isn't provocative to mention books, I'd recommend one on Krakatoa by Simon Winchester, a very British journalist who I met once in Singapore when he was covering a financial downturn in the eighties.
A great read with insights into life at the time and the impact of the explosion on the world.

thanks.
nice one mate chance of a lifetime
interesting man. Unfortunately all those reds means I can't green ya. But good thread.
Great stuff willy. I've seen the devastation in Angeles and Rabaul shortly after the volcanic eruptions there, and flown over the Hawaiian volcanos by helicopter- the chopper was being tossed around like a rag by the heat coming off the lava flows. Absolutely awesome things.
I've been to Rabaul also, apparently the city used to be the 'venice of the east' - its naught but a horrible dirty old shanty town now.Originally Posted by sabang
The bitter cold summers resulted from the even more powerful Tambora volcano on Sumbawa about 400 miles east of Surabaya that exploded around 1816 if I recall correctly. That blast left an unbelieveable crater in the top of Tambora that you can see on satellite images, 100% destruction on the northern part of the island. The most powerful blast since Thera destroyed the Greek Island of Santorini 4000 years ago. Pinatubo 1991 and Vesuvius 79AD were also quite powerful. Krakatoa seems to have catostrophic eruptions every 1300 years or so, right now it is still rebuilding and will mostly have minor to moderate erruptions, eventually it will plug up and fall silent for hundreds of years and the pressure will build up until it has a catostrophic blast like in 1883. Right now there is a volcano near Anchorage Alaska errupting that is altering transpacific flight routes that use the great circle over Alaska.

So are there official "Krakatoa" tours, or was this something you had to arrange yourself?
a number of tour companies and all resorts on both sides of the Sunda Straights will offer this tour, as far as I could tell they are all identical in structure and price.Originally Posted by nightowl2548

Lampung residents told not to panic as Mt. Anak Krakatau spews ash
Oyos Saroso H.N. and Yuli Tri Suwarni , The Jakarta Post , Bandarlampung/Bandung | Tue, 04/21/2009 10:21 AM | Headlines
Coastal residents living close to Mount Anak Krakatau, off the Sunda Strait in Lampung, have evacuated to Bandarlampung out of fear of an imminent eruption of the volcano due to increased volcanic activity, despite the fact that its alert status remains at two, our of four.
Sonhaji, 45, a resident of Bawang village, Punduh Pidada district in South Lampung, said he took his family to his relative’s house in Bandarlampung on April 18, as he was afraid Mount Anak Krakatau would have a major eruption, as it has been producing small eruptions over the past week.
“The distance between our village and Anak Krakatau is more than three miles, but the sound of eruption that it produces is very loud, like the sound of a cannon in the middle of the sea,” he said.
“So far it has never emitted such loud blasts and we have been observing that it has often discharged molten lava.”
Sonhaji said fishermen had been afraid to fish around the volcano and the Sunda Strait over the past week.
Residents in Punduh Pidada say they have not heard eruptions as huge as those over the past week since Anak Krakatau was classified as active.
South Lampung Regent Wendy Melfa said his office is coordinating with the Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency in anticipation of the possibility of an eruption.
“The status of the volcano remains alert as of now, but we are helping people to evacuate because they are terrified,” Wendy said.
“We have also informed islanders around the volcano not to panic.”
The Vulcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) in Bandung has set the status of the volcano, situated east in the Sunda Strait, as alert. The last time it showed signs of activity was in mid February, when it erupted up to three times a day.
The seismograph at the Anak Krakatau observation post in Hargopancuran village, Rajabasa district, South Lampung, has recorded 126 eruptions weekly, including 23 deep underground, 82 shallow and 149 hot cloud discharges.
In Bandung, chief of the center’s volcano monitoring team, Muhammad Hendrasto, called on residents not to panic.
“Its activities have yet to increase the current alert level,” he said.
Visual observation from the Pasauran post in Cinangka district, Serang regency in Banten shows greyish ash formations between 200 an 800 meters high.
The formation is monitored by the MITSAT satellite of the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. Qantas pilots have also reported the ash formations.

Alert status of rumbling Mt. Slamet, Anak Krakatau raised
Agus Maryono and Yuli Tri Suwarni , The Jakarta Post , Purwokerto/Bandung | Sat, 04/25/2009 10:38 AM | Headlines
The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) recommended Friday five regental administrations in Central Java distribute facemasks in anticipation of the spewing of thick ash from rumbling Mt. Slamet.
The recommendation to the five regencies — Banyumas, Purbalingga, Pemalang, Tegal and Brebes — was made after seismic activity of the mount, which has begun spewing thick ash and molten lava from its crater, increased intensively.
The recommendation was made after the alert status was raised to level three (of four) on Thursday evening, just two days after the status was raised to level two.
"The local administrations should disseminate this recommendation to the people living around Mt. Slamet," chairman of the PVMBG Surono said.
He added that Bojong and Bumujawa districts in Tegal and Pulosari district in Pemalang are expected to be the hardest hit.
In order to get rid of the increased seismic activities "we will coordinate with the Central Java provincial administration and the five regencies near the rumbling mount," he said, urging the residents to wear the masks to prevent breathing problems.
Friday's volcanic activity was marked by an increasing frequency of eruptions, followed by light earthquakes.
As of Friday, 52 small-scale tremors have been registered at the mount.
Meanwhile, the number of eruptions of Mt. Anak Krakatau, an active volcano on the Sunda Strait, reached 175 as of Wednesday, enough to raise its alert status to level three.
Jumono, an official of the Mt. Anak Karakatau monitoring team in Cinangka district, Serang, West Java, said that it is currently too dangerous to visit the mountain.
Despite Mt. Slamet's heightened alert status, however, the Bandung-based PVMBG has not recommended closure of nearby tourist sites.
The situation has remained calm in the five regencies on the slopes of the mount as people went about their daily activities as usual.
Surono said in Bandung on Friday that the lava from Mt. Slamet was not dangerous as the mountain is so huge that it would be difficult for it to reach the nearest residential sites very quickly.
"There is no need to evacuate the residents on the slopes of the mount," he said.
The Baturraden tourist site, on the southern slope of the mountain. was also busy receiving many visitors.
In response to the increased activity, trekking and hiking activities have been banned in the area.

Anak Krakatau on alert, surrounding area sealed off
The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Sun, 05/17/2009 11:14 AM | National
In response to increasing seismic activity around Mt. Anak Krakatau, trekking and hiking activities have been banned in the area.
A Mt. Anak Krakatau monitoring team official said Sunday that the mountain, which has experienced increasing seismic activity since April, has been erupting on a daily basis.
"We advise tourists, fishermen, to stay clear of the mount's three-kilometer radius area," Anton Tripambudi said, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
According to reports made by the team that is stationed in Pasauran, Serang, Banten, there has been a total of 85 eruptions, six internal vulcanic quakes and 18 tremors within the last 12 hours.
"The three kilometer radius area surrounding the mount is unsafe, as there are strong indications of increasing seismic activities including the emission of hazardous gas," Anton said.
In April this year, observers have put Mt. Anak Krakatau on high alert. (amr)

*I think this is an old photo of Krakatoa eruprting, not a recent one..... but it looks good nonetheless.*
bugger, I was planning on taking young JuniorWilly next month to see the volcano, but looks like it may not be possible, or safe.

Thanks for this thread. I just looked the krakatoa 4 video.
How did you model that Aztek face into the cloud near the end of the video?
thanks.
this doco is pretty good. unlike PB's recommendation.
