    Hari Raya Waisak

Celebrate Buddha's Birth, Enlightenment and Demise in jakarta

The Indonesian buddhist temple is from the outside a rather ordinary building....

This Buddhist festival commemorates the birth, enlightenment and demise of Buddha. Devotees gather at temples to pray, perform rituals, contribute charitable donations and listen to preachment. Probably the best place to experience this is Vihara Mahavira Graha Pusat (Indonesian Buddhist Center) at Jalan Lodan. If the festival falls on a weekday, Buddhist youths get together on the first Saturday to sing, dance and perform Waisak-themed operas. A bazaar springs open, selling vegetarian fare, souvenir and prayer beads. In Indonesia, the event centers on Borobudur and Mendut temples in Central Java.

About the Waisak Ceremony in Vihara Mahavira Graha, you have to phone that Temple asking when it will be held. In Indonesia many temples don't held Waisak Ceremony on Waisak Day itself. You have to confirm the time by calling the Vihara. I don't know the time because I'm not devotee of this temple but last year I attended Waisak Ceremony at this Temple.

    Vihara Mahavira Graha
    Jl. Lodan Raya 6B, 14430, (690283 or 690284)

This is a Mahayana Sect Vihara.

In Indonesia, we still have many Ceremonies from other Viharas. I'll post it later the Theravada's.

    Thanks

Every year Indonesia also has National Waisak Ceremony centered in Borobudur Temple. This year the national ceremony is held in both Borobudur Temple and Jakarta with several activities :

    - Waisak Ceremony 2552 / 2008: Tuesday May,20th 2008
Meditation Preparation in Mendut Temple at 8:00 am (morning)
    Waisak Time Meditation at 09:11am
Waisak Procession Mendut Temple - Borobudur Temple at 14:00 (02:00pm)
Waisak ritual ceremony in Borobudur Temple at 16:30
I heard that before those ceremony, there is a Chanting Ceremony for 24 hours non stop from 3 big Buddhist Sects in Indonesia (Theravada, Mahayana, Tantrayana).

In Jakarta will be held Saturday, May 24th 2008 at 18:00-21:00 on Istora Senayan Gelora Bung Karno, Lapangan Bulu Tangkis Jl. Pintu Timur Senayan, Jakarta Pusat

    Several activities:
    - Social and Medication Activities May 14th-19th 2008 in Rembang, Pati, Jepara dan Candi Borobudur - Central Java
    - Planting Trees May 12th-19th 2008 in Kudus, Pati, Jepara dan Candi Borobudur - Central Java

For Waisak CCeremony in Borobudur, you don't have to bring invitation. In jakarta, the invitation should be taken from each Vihara / Temple because the building has capacity. Such ceremony is usually attended by Indonesian high official such as President, Ministers, etc.

Ok Kingwilly, later after I get the invitation, I'll give you the detail of the time, venue, activities, etc. It will be held on June, 1'st 2008. The temple name is Vipassana Graha, Telp: (022)2787664. The abbot is Phra Wongsin Labhiko (Thai Monk) or you may call him Bhante Wongsin.

You can come also to Buddha Metta Arama in Jakarta May, 25th at 8:30, will be attended by many Thai monks who will arrive in Jakarta from Thailand soon.

Those I stated above are Centers of Thai Temples in Indonesia (Theravada sect). I'll post several ceremonies at those Viharas later.

    Thank you

I'm not sure I want to join in chanting for 24 hours though...

I think you have to phone the Vihara first, before you go there. I worry there is no special activities on Waisak May,20th 2008 because they celebrate on different time.

Just come on the celebration Day June, 1st 2008. You have to know that those 2 Central Thai Temples coordinate each other although they have different abbot but the monks are the same. They are grouped in Thai Theravada Sangha. So whenever there is a celebration in one of the temple, the abbot and the monks who usually lives in other temple also come to the temple that celebrate a ceremony.

Just come on the celebration time.

    Thanks,

    Flora

I can't imagine if you join the 24-hour Chanting and then followed by the Waisak Ceremony all day long. It's in Borobudur. I think they are doing that now.

Kingwilly, that's the detail of the schedule in Lembang that you wished to come.
If you want to go to take picture, don't be late. You may stay in Lembang Bandung one day before or you may depart from Jakarta as early as possible because it's too far from Jakarta. But better for you to stay 1 night before the celebration.

Sorry for previous post. In previous post, I wrote that Wat Bovorn's Somdej came to Jakarta. The fact is not Somdej but Jou Kun (I forget his name),the Vice Abbot of Wat Bovorn.

    Thank you.
