    Expatriate
    1. force to leave one's country; banish; exile (v)
    2. withdrawl (oneself) from one's country; renounce one's citizenship (n)

Is somebody who's working in Thailand (doesn't plan to stay permanently) an expat -- or just working abroad?

I'd guess tourists in thailand outnumber expats 50/1.

Well the expats with delusions of grandeur, say that you can only be classed as expat if you have been recruited outside of Thailand or been transferred by your company.

If you have come here and found employment, you cant be included in with that hallowed clique.

I'm strictly speaking a PT (perpetual traveller) according to the British embassy, not an expat, even though I left the UK in 1980 and have lived in SE Asia since then.

Despite working in Japan for many years (company transfers) I never considered myself an expat until I retired and moved here.

The biggest delusion I see is the disparity of standard of living.

The expat drives a clapped out Honda but boasts of having a Rolls Royce back home. The same type boasts of $200 bottles of wine he used to sip back home, while he nurses his Chang draft. I suppose it could be true in some cases, more likely just braggadocio.

Not sure this was a delusion of grandeur, but delusion certainly.

I was leaving the cinema at Siam Paragon last night and was accompanied by some jerk in immitation kevlar jacket and fatigues all bearing "Los Angeles Emergency SWAT (Stupid White American Twat) Team" insignia. Puh-leeze.

Maybe he heard about all the bombings in Yala, Pattani, Naratiwat and thought he should suit up for his trip to Thailand.

How do you know it was imitation kevlar?
    Did someone shoot him?

    We can hope, can't we?

This guy was well into his 40's.

As for Kevlar, I've seen the real thing and this looked more like something from a party store. Not like my SAS card which is, of course, genuine. I'm retired now though.

ideal clothing for a night at the cinema....except it looked very little like this and the badges certainly weren't remotely similar.
