    Umbilical hernia

I've had this problem for over 10 years and it's been pissing me off more and more lately.
I'm going to be in LOS for 2 months next month and can be anywhere between Udon Thani Surin to Had lek. Can anyone recommend me a place that has user friendly prices. Would I be better off out in the country or is it all much the same prices in Pattaya as it would be in Buriram?

I've used this web site for my teeth but they don't advertise surgery prices when you type in hernia it only spits out high end hospitals in BKK Pats and Pookies.

    Thanks.

Any government hospital that does surgery.

I doubt it as a mesh is usually inserted to give strength to the tear area. I had a lower stomach hernia. They don't knock you out, but numb your lower half. No problems.

I had an umbilical hernia repaired at Bumrungrad Hospital last November. Cost was around 17,000 baht. It was outpatient basis. They just numbed the area, shaved my belly and went to town. The surgeon inserted a mesh.

One of the interesting things was that my blood pressure was going crazy and they would not discharge me until my BP was "normal". Of course, all week waiting for the surgery, I had been pigging out on bacon at breakfast, so the sodium was affecting it. I've cut way back since then. I've always had excellent BP and that really bugged the heck out of me.

The other interesting thing was that I was awake throughout. I noticed the big curved overhead light, that they use for surgery field, was reflective. If they had it tilted just a little further, I could have watched the whole procedure. As it was, I saw the tops of instruments and their hands.

Their was some slight discomfort during the surgery. At one point, it felt like I was getting a slow, continuous punch in the belly. That hurt and I told the surgeon and he apologized.

There was a follow up visit a day or two later. Some pain for 4-5 days, definitely had trouble laughing or coughing for a few days (I guess I now know what ladies who have a C-section go through). I wish they would give stronger pain killers that panadol. I was really hoping for something like Vicodin for a few days. I think it's not permitted for outpatient cases.

Considering that had I had the procdure back in the USA, it would have cost me at least US$4-5,000, I won't complain. My insurance covered most of it.

If you want the name of the surgeon, drop me a PM and I'll see if I can dig it out.

I've got a mate in Oz just had a pre-employment medical, turns out he's got an umbilical hernia that they want fixed before they will hire him.
No private cover and can't afford to wait on medicare so wants to get it done in Thailand.
I saw the 2011 price of 17000 bht above and am wondering what today's prices would be.
With that plus the airfare it might be cheaper to get it done back in Australia.
    What do you guys reckon?

Roughly the same. I had a hernia couple years back (not umbilical though) and had it done in-patient and it was about 15k (I think, can't remember exactly now) at a private hospital.

That was for the mesh insert though, key-hole surgery is more expensive.

I've got no idea of the cost in Aust but ballpark with surgery, flights, accommodation etc. it would probably be anywhere between 60 - 100,00 (AUD2,300 - 3,800) here depending.

Not really that bad if you make it part of a holiday trip.

    Thanks for that info Ant.
Wouldn't be much of a holiday though trying to shag after the op.

I had one done in Oz about 15 years ago and they went in through the navel, no scars, I suppose you could call that keyhole.

    Anymore quotes out there?

    No worries.

That actually occurred to me after I'd posted about the holiday bit. I did mine few days before I flew back home for a holiday and it made the first week or so a bit rough going.

Have to agree with Steve farang, don't fuck around with the quacks in udon or anywhere in the province, get your ass to Bangkok , yes you will pay more but you will get the real deal, I live in Lao and wouldn't entertain the idea of getting treated/ diagnosed correctly here, I once thought( mistakenly) that medical care was only an hours drive away in udon, IT ISNT mis diagnosis by someone claiming to be an ophthalmologist USA trained nearly cost me an eye, don't fook about get yer ass to Bangkok, even if yor affliction seems minor
