Throat Surgery - What do they do?

I got a little growth on the inside right of my throat, at the top nearly, it started about 3 months ago and was a mild irritant at that time, now it is an irritant, painful and causing pain to my right ear, obviously 30 years of smoking isn't helpful to it.

So I assume they have to hold my mouth open to get in there and chop it out, I really can't see a nice way they can do this, will this be just an in and out surgery?

I've done half a bottle of scotch so far and it aint killing the pain even took some pain killers yesterday and I haven't used them for at least 10 years, I don't take pain killers for minor stuff like stitches and that.

^Yes, I have thought about that, it is now becoming the only option, but you know they just want to stab you with knives and stuff

Have a friend who had a growth removed years ago (but it was cancerous) at a Mayo Clinic in Texas.

He has a scar on the side of his neck (maybe 1 inch, 1 ½?). And he’s still with us.

They'll probably put you out for it, a mate had a similar complaint a year ago and they put him out, they won't trust you not to freak when you see all these people with knives inside your mouth and they might have to do more than is first expected once they get at it. Anyway Thai hospitals being what they are they'll want to milk the insurance for as much as possible.

Ok so if you're going native then it will be a bit different but I can't see how they won't knock you out for it, make sure they sent the lump off for a biopsy.

Before they operate they should take a "sample" of the contents of the lump. They can then test the sample to see if the "growth" is malignant or not.

If they decide to operate, you can always say no, this is the procedure.

Dont leave it to long though.

The cut is from behind the ear, down and forward under your chin. Usually they cut along a neck wrinkle to hide the scare a little.

They then peel the skin forward, cut the overlaying muscles trying to miss all the muscle control nerves. Cut out the, hopefully non malignant, tumour and sew you up.

If they have cut some of the nerves in your face, you may loose control of that side of your face and mouth muscles. Usually the nerves regenerate, this can take a few weeks, and you regain movement but not always.

Here is a good site which may be of help.

    http://www.fauquierent.net/neckmass.htm

In the UK it is a hospital visit for the "sample", wait for results, a 2 day hospital surgery visit, you are out completely and a hospital visit after a few weeks so they check you muscle control and bask in the glory of saving your life, which they may well have.

On the other hand it may be a wisdom tooth problem.

    Common Symptoms of Throat Cancer

Throat cancer is a group of cancerous condition of the pharynx and larynx. These are again associated with carcinoma of the lips, mouth and nasal cavity. By histological appearance, throat cancer belongs to squamous cell carcinoma where the squamous cell lining of pharynx and larynx goes into anaplasia. Rarely, it may be adenocarcinoma. Metastasis generally occurs to the lymph nodes of the neck (submandibular is the most common place). The cause of throat cancer is mainly tobacco smoking and Human papilloma virus (HPV). Common symptoms of throat cancer are –
    • Hoarseness of voice – this is the main complain in laryngeal carcinoma. Vocal cord is present in the larynx and the cancerous condition leads to defective movement of vocal cord. So, there is hoarseness.
    • Persistent sore throat – dull pain in the throat that does not wane off even after a full course of antibiotics. The cancer cells destroy the nerve endings of the pharynx and larynx causing constant pain in the throat.
    • Recurrent cough – recurrent bouts of cough are also noticed due to constant irritation in the throat. Cough can be associated with copious mucous expectoration. It may be sometimes mixed with blood also.
    • Palpable lump – swelling may be present in the throat, neck or rear aspect of the mouth. It is firm to hard when palpated and the surface is irregular. Initially the lump is freely moveable. At the later stage of the throat cancer, it gets fixed with the surrounding structure.
    • Pain in the ear – as the cancerous cells traverses through the fascial layers, irritation of the auditory and facial nerve occurs. This may lead to pain in the ear and frontal part of the face.
    • Breathing difficulty – when the tumor is large enough to block the trachea, the patient may suffer from difficulty in respiration.
    • Weight loss – no obvious reason can be found for persistent weight loss. Patient with throat cancer may present to a doctor for the first time complaining of pain in the throat and remarkable loss of weight.
    • Bleeding from the nose and throat – as the thin blood vessels are destroyed, bleeding from the nose or through the throat can occur. The distinctive feature of a throat cancer is that there will be painless bleeding.
    • Small nodules in the neck region – when the localized cancer of the throat metastasizes to adjacent lymph gland of the neck, small nodules can be felt in this area (just below the angle of the jaw, and mentum).
    • Difficulty in swallowing – when the tumor grows in size and blocks the esophagus or encompasses it, patient can suffer from difficulty in swallowing.
    • Headache and pain in upper teeth – these can happen when the cancer cells engulf the trigeminal nerve. There may be pain in the back of the eyeball.
    • Facial palsy – paralysis of the muscle of the face can occur when facial nerve is involved. There may be masked face, closure of the eyelid and drooling of saliva from angle of the mouth.
These are the common symptoms of throat cancer. The symptoms may vary in patients according to the size of the tumor and the degree of metastasis.

Surgery ? You're getting a bit ahead of yourself there eh Dog, try gargling a couple of times a day with some decent antiseptic like TCP, neat if you can handle it if not water it down. See if that reduces it first ya big nancy. Soluble aspirin with help reduce the general inflamation in your throat and the earache. If that doesn't work then go and get it seen to. Remember, doctors are for poofs.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

In that case then give him a hit of PCP and get the pliers out..
It's a bit of a leap from a lump in the throat and an earache to having throat cancer,
I mean let's hope it's not, but I reckon you've all got that munchausens by proxy.. you just want to experience the pain and the blood even if it's second hand.. cor go on get in there get it cut out yeaaaah, cut him, cut bit's off him...

Clear your oral hygene out first and kick the ciggies in to touch and see if that helps... you never know eh.

I had a mole that got bigger and darker on my cheek

I didn't worry about it until my subtle mate pointed at it one Xmas and said "WTF ? That's cancer that is"

It werent that big, anyhow I went the doctor a couple of months later

Now I have a prosthetic ear and nose

Only kiddin, the GP said to me after examining it

" What's your problem with it, it looks nothing to worry about "

I told him It had got darker and bigger, so he said the only way to know is to go and have a biopsy down the hospital

I went the hospital, they gave me a nice little 1 inch scar like action man and told me to come back in 3 weeks

I went back in 3 weeks, remembering the GP's words, nothing to worry about

Anyhow I go into the consultants room and he asks if I have a wife and to bring her in and take a seat, then told me it was a melanoma and they had found skin cancer

I went back in 2 weeks for the op where they slashed 3 inches down my cheek while awake.

Pushed on a trolley back to the hospital bed with a big bandage over my face, everyone staring at me like the elephant man. All the other bastards in the ward just had moles on there arses or backs

All turned out well in the end, I had to go back once a year for 5 years to check for lumps in my throat and get my balls felt, (he said I had lymph nodes there too)

Anyhow, the point I was trying to get to is the sooner you get things done, the better.

And sometimes you need someone to point that out
