    Internet and Health

I wonder how the Internet is affecting your health in general. Is it pulling you away form other activities that would benefit you more or do you think it actually increases your health in some way.

Personally, I've been using the net for years and I can't say it has added much to my physical health. Lately, I feel extrememly addicted to it. I waste endless amounts of time on the net here, surfing yahoo and the news sites, youtube and with porn too. Overall I'd say the Internet has turned from something useful and informative into a big waste of time for me. Instead of going out to be with people, I end up staying home and clicking away for hours on end. I even put off my work to respond to posts on all sorts of topics. I find myself screwing around at the office doing the same thing. To be honest I am completely out of control. All this internet stuff hasn't made me smarter, solved any world problems or done much else for me. It's a lot like watching the TV all day. It's got to come to an end.

So I want to get away from the keyboard and get outside more. I want to find myself reading more books than reading online hash. I need to find a balance between the real world and the world here online. I know I can't give it up completely as I do use email for work, friends, and family and I occasionally need to look up real information here but something has got to change.

How do you feel about using the Internet? Have you found a balance between the online world and the real world?

Yeah, I've pretty much decided that I have to do something. I really have no life and my health has gotten worse over the years. I've been depressed most of my life and that too has worsened in recent years. I need to separate myself from the endless information that I encounter. There's just too much for me. Lately I've realized that I just don't make the grade dealing with all of it. Other people tend to focus on certain areas/topics avoiding the rest. I just can't do this. The result is a lot of meaningless information affecting my life. The political and social news really gets to me the worst. I just can't let it go. I have got to say something when I read some extreme view, and that could be from any side. Like any drug addiction it just gets worse and worse and now its at the point where the pleasure is mostly gone for me...yet I still participate in it!

I'll check up on this thread but at this point I think I have to take a break from TD and the Net. I've been heading down this road for a long time. It has nothing to do with this website. It's all about me. Like the younger generation nowadays who can't live without cellphones, I sort of feel that it is impossible to live without the Internet. That idea really bothers me because I know there was a world before the Internet. Can I escape the 'information age'? Time will tell.

It's about boredom, and willpower, or lack thereof. You obviously are about tapped out. Set a time limit. Get on at a certain time each day, check what you HAVE to, and get off. Then, find something to replace the hours you have been wasting daily. Read, exercise, swim, dive, drink in bars with cute chicks, or the like. You can't just set a one-hour limit on it, turn it off, and then sit there and stare at it. You have to find some other stuff to do with your time. All the above works if you have willpower. If you don't, you're fucked.

Time to get active and get out of this chair. I need to spend more time outside and doing things that are better for my spirit and body. Time will tell how it goes. I'm not a big believer in personal change because I've really never been able to change my habits or attitude. But what can I do? All I can do is take that first step.

    By me of course.

it is an issue, what seems to be just a quick check in can turn into more than an hour and lost opportunities to do something more constructive
