Experinces of the Thai Healthcare System

I had cause to visit a friend in a Thai state hospital recently, I won't name it as that might not be appropriate on a message board such as this. They are great places to have a laugh at other people's expense, because unlike in the western world where being ill is a kind of a private thing, here in the Land of Smiles, it seems to be a great opportunity for a family-get-together and an opportunity for a 24 hour party of dried squid, sticky rice and rice whisky just to the right of the patient's bed. And if that wasn't bad enough Thai State hospitals are a haven for relatives to spend the day sprawled out on the floor arguing, gabbling away on their moblies or gawping at the patient in the bed opposite. I guess such a fate awaits us all.... well, that’s kharma!

Oh! And a couple of commodities of which are a rare in sight at a Thai State hospital are, one: a doctor and two: a nurse.

Sorry, I never saw anyone laughing at the patients in a Thai hospital.
    Must be a 'shagpile' thing.

^ I was merely suggesting that some of the things that go on in Thai state hospitals were amusing to the non-native, using my recent observations as material to highlight the point. I'm sure patients are taken care of very well in the Thai state healthcare system.

The availability of a few doctors & nurses perhaps?

PS. It was only recently that I found out that the Bumrungrad hospital is American owned, but then of course it's a private healthcare establishment.

I didn't have a sofa to relax on when I waited for 6 hours in the Emergency in London!

One of the nurses did let me have a cig in their staff room, though, I think in Thailand you'd have to go outside.

Where my surgeon and doc friend works. I stayed overnight here three years ago after a seizure of my brain.

The sight of nurses in uniform don't half keep you going. And keep you awake.

Well if the British general public paid a slighlty higher level of National Insurance, then I'm sure they'd (the hospital directors) remedy that deficiency quite quickly.

Anyway, what would your priority be, comfy sofas as in Thailand or doctors & nurses available on hand in London, when needed?

I was waiting for 6 hours for an emegency operation (one of the major London hospitals), a nurse and a doc had a quick look before then, as they do in Thailand as well. Our carpenter was stitched u within 1/2 hour at the local Thai hospital.

I think if if they charged more than 30Bt, there'd be more doctors and nurses to look after patients in Thailand as well.

That teaches you to get a good health insurance. You know you can get private rooms with nurses and doctors and all? Even the Nam Phong provincial hospital which is way out in the sticks has got a room for a german git like me who wants to have his privacy.

Fuck. Been in worse in the States. State run? You got a wooden bench and to listen to fuckers screamin', pukin', yellin'. Nurses all over the place not doin' a goddam thing. No couches, no comfort. nothing to eat or drink 'sept some tepid water dribblin out of the "fountain."

Every time I've been to a state hospital here I got a nurse/doctor within minutes. Mother-in-law is going through laser treatment for her eyes we go to ther room have a party, keep her company think she'd shrivel up and die if she didn't have one fo her daughters in attendance.

Those folks layin around the room seem to have already been attended to. Family members are able to stay overnight with the patients and see to their needs such as bathin if they wish thus saving patients some embarassment at the hands of strangers.

Fuckin hospitals here are alright in my book. let me stand by my kids side through every step of his treatment. explained to me what and why, never had a doctor do that back in the world.

Life Expectancy in Thailand is compared below with the data in other countries in Asia. There is a strong correlation with overal adjusted GDP and health expenditure. However, when looking closer, Thailand is actually doing worse than both Vietnam and China. [data WHO, 2003, published 2005)
As indicated in bolt, Thailand still has a very substantial amount of (young) people dying from HIV/AIDS. While there is no secrecy about this issue, compared to its significance relatively little attention is paid in the media about this issue. It seems to be accepted that about 1% of the population is HIV-positive.
Way to many young people still die unnecessarily in Thailand due to car and (mostly) motorcycle accidents. The actual number of deaths on the road is reportedly around 30,000. Many more of course get maimed for live, or require expensive medical care (if they can afford it).

The wife, a nurse, has had some contact with, and been impressed by, whats she's seen at Bumrungrad (of course), Bangkok Nursing Hospital, Bangkok Christian Hospital and the Christian Hospital at Nakhon Pathom. Of course, we have health insurance - wouldn't be happy without it.
