    Smart watch recommendation please

Had a BP of 200 the other day. It's kinda got me worried. I have a BP monitor but it's difficult to take with me everywhere. So a Smart Watch has to be an alternative. I don't want one that's all singing etc but just one that's accurate for BP checks. Any recommendations please?

Sorry it's a smart watch I want . Not a phone. Sorry about the cock up.

I have the Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 classic.

Paid around the 15k mark, but maybe get it cheaper if you look around.

For the BP, you take 3 measurements off the blood pressure machine whilst wearing the watch to calibrate it. Once calibrated you can check your BP whenever.

The only trouble is that you have to calibrate it each month, and as with all watches, they are not 100% accurate, but close enough.

    Got mine from Central - SAMSUNG สมาร์ทวอชหน้าจอขนาด43มม.พร้อมฟังชั่นบลูทูธ รุ่นGalaxy Watch 6 Classic สีดำ ชาย หญิง | ลด 14.58% | Central Online

I take mild blood pressure medication which I am hoping to stop due to my health kick. But whatever, 200 is very high... beware of 'white coat syndrome', it's surprising how much your BP will come down on the second or third measurement taken half an hour of so after arriving at a hospital. Mine will usually come down from the 140s to low 130s in the period, but still too high. I'm sure I can get it down to healthy levels with healthy living and no meds.

However, I think that my high BP is mainly mental rather than physical. I am sure that after being home for three days with the bloody wife my BP has raised at least 10 points, for example I can feel it fizzing tonight.

Doesn't really sound like something you want to use a watch for.

Never looked at BP machines, but would be if I was ahem, getting on in years, and had a BP reading of 200.

Mendip is right. You need to sit 20 to 30 min before taking your BP. And 200 is fucking high.

I have been looking at smart rings. They have made big advances recently, and a number coming on line. Easier and less intrusive than smart watches, and easier to sleep with. Give them a check out. Careful for one brand that requires a monthly subscription, but the rest do not.

Garmin are typically great. Used their GPS for bike touring back before smartphones etc.

Nev bought a Garmin fitness watch a few years ago and I think he wasn't too taken with how imprecise some of the measurements were, think he was monitoring hearth something or other with it.

I have an old Samsung Galaxy 3 smartwatch which does the job.
As mentioned by Bogey above, you have to calibrate the watch 3 times with a blood pressure monitor and then it'll work on its own for a month or so.
I got the blood pressure monitor off Amazon for around 25 quid.

Tbh I only used it once and stuck it on the old fridge. It seems to have gone missing now although could do with finding it and seeing what my reading is nowadays without the smoking.

Going to the Doctor may raise it, but not to this level, usually 160 max. You need to be on high blood pressure medication. If you are not then see a doctor and get this done pronto.

Don't worry, there is plenty of good medication around and your blood pressure will drop to acceptable levels. However, it is worth monitoring yourself to ensure all is okay.

This happened to me a few years ago and I tried to find a smartwatch but there was none available at that time. The Galaxy Smartwatch 6 says it can but reports suggest it is not accurate and you need to calibrate against a certified machine anyway. As far as I am aware, Garmin say they cannot monitor blood pressure accurately and have not incorporated it into their high end watches.

If things have changed, then I am also interested but the best method is to lie down for 20 minutes and then use a certified blood pressure monitor.

This is quite a serious condition Prag so take it seriously.

^ That 265 is not Dill's blood pressure. It is the current pressure of the cuff.

This. You need to see a doctor right away. Blood pressure that high can result in a stroke or even worse. That is deadly serious.

I've been on BP medicine for a year or so but this is the first time it's hit the 200 mark. Also I've noticed, as mentioned by Mendip, my BP automatically jumps when I visit an hospital. Why I went to hospital initially was because a doctor told me if my monitor hit 160 I was to get into hospital straight away. This is what I did.
Treatment at the hospital was basic in that all they did was make me lie down for an hour after giving me a Hydralazine tablet. Anyway thanks to all that responded to my call for help and I'll carry on doing a bit more Google-ing.

I tried really hard to do it by changing my lifestyle. Failed miserably (probably due to genetic inheritance). Ended up on 8 different meds a day. In retrospect the doc was giving me ‘belt and braces’ meds to cure it.
After one year, I reduced it to two tablets a day and I bought a machine to measure it at home. Same model as Dill.

All ok now. Just measure it about once a fortnight, or if I feel like I need it. The good pharmacies in Thailand would do it for free. If you are in UK and over 60, your prescriptions are free. Most places in Asia it’s available over the counter, but expensive if you are popping 8 tabs a day.

Good luck with your lifestyle changes Mendip.

@prag - as troy has said, this is a serious condition. I think anything above 140 or 150 is considered as high.

Not to alarm anyone, but my BIL had a minor stroke in January last year. BP was 200 or so. He didn't smoke or drink but he had the genes, didn't exercise and was fond of chips (the Doritos kind, not French fries kind) which are very salty. He stayed for ~2 weeks in hospital. I told the story last year in the hypertension thread.

@prag and @dill - aside from meds (if you're on meds), pineapple juice works. You may also try green tea and lemon-water. Apple cider vinegar (1 tbsp in 1 glass of water), taken 1st thing in the morning, also helps some people. (I sometimes do the apple cider thingy.)
