Grapefruit is a no no, allegedly.....

I happened to be chatting with my Hematologist whilst in Darwin for my last session and I mentioned that we have about 30 or so pomelo trees in the garden.
He got quite upset and explained that grapefruit, pomelo and the like were absolutely banned with the medication I'm on.
    News to me.

Anyway, here's an article which I found quite interesting. If you're on any regular medication you might do yourself a favour and have a bit of a look. Apparently there are 85 different types of drug that can be upset by consuming grapefruit. Who knew.....

I really enjoy Grapefruit, especially the juice and it's a citrus fruit. Enjoyable at breakfast.
Always was told that it was healthy. What next , now it's unhealthy, always something next that's bad for you.
    Aah bollocks to it all.

Mate, me too. nothing better that a plate of good quality pomelo straight from the fridge for breakfast. I love all citrus fruit and I'm damn sure it is good for you but the point is if you're on any of the drugs mentioned the reaction could be pretty serious.

As I explained to my Doc., when I'm destitute we'll be living off the bloody stuff to which he replied "fine, just don't be taking any medication" Harsh but fair.

I have renal failure and in the 'blood taking' room at the Royal Sussex Hospital Renal Unit in Brighton there were posters on the wall advising against grapefruit.... but only for patients on certain drugs and I was not one of them.

This was 6 years ago though so maybe things have changed.

I'm not on any medication myself but I had a quick look at that list to see if I recognise any of the drugs. Only two stood out ... quinine and sildenafil.

Sildenafil only stood out for me because of a post by Shrewed Punter yesterday. It is the drug used in Viagra and Kamagra jelly, etc. So beware!

    Interesting list...
A healthy individual needn't concern too much, as the listing is specific-centric and non-atypical.

I was told grapefruit juice increases the risk of side-effects from using the drugs I was on. Nothing more specific than that. Yes you can have a glass of grapefruit juice or dig in to a fresh half for breakfast...just not everyday and not large quantities.

I have stayed way from all fruit juice (except special occasions) due to the amount of sugar they contain, but that's a different matter.

Does such restriction [other citrus] of limes apply in your case as well, Geoff?

Limes are almost endemic throughout Thai and broader regional cuisines.

According to the admirable Dr. F. Szabo, "Yes".

    * According to my Doctor, the answer was no, lemon, limes and oranges do not have the same effect as grapefruit. Didn't ask about pomelo but I use the others a lot in cooking and specifically asked if they were okay.

Which just about sums things up quite nicely.
Differing opinions abound and for a poor fool like me it's hard to know what to believe.
Still, I'll keep off the citrus for a while. I'll stick to hops and grape.

Do you mean packaged/prepared or the naturally occurring sugars in fresh-squeezed?
    Just curious.

^ Packaged/prepared fruit juice. When the sugar level was high then I had a very limited choice of fresh fruit but it is okay now...I simply prefer sour to sweet nowadays.

Would never have guessed a citrus fruit could be harmful.
What next? Water is bad for you?
We have had various experts over the years tell us every food group is dangerous.
Oh well, pass me the Mama noodles.
