oh so u hav to be demanding when eating out then ? is that a HiSO thing ?
Bet the waiters and other staff must be really happy to see you coming. How much do you tip Pat?Originally Posted by DJ Pat
Gullivers in Soi 7, great place for watching the punters with their "catch of the day" but the food is crap, last time I ate there ordered a Musaman Gai. The chicken was barely cooked, well bloody inside. The surly looking bastard that keeps watch over the place pisses me off big time. On the same occasion as the "rare chicken" he told me my (4 Yr old) daughter couldn't bring outside food in (we were sitting outside) the outside food was an icecream she was eating. Arrogant Git.
On a brighter note, most of the stalls in the Soi 7 eating area. (opposite BG7) serve bloody good food. Considering most of the customers are tourists they don't take the piss. Food and value for money are both up there.
I apologise for that post, I sound ****-ish. I couldn't think of a word at the time.Originally Posted by aging one

There was only one variety, so I opted for the Ba-Mee haing with red pork instead.
The rather small portion was put carelessly in front of me on the table, and the waitress turned her back and disappeared before I could order a drink.
The pork was rather chewy, and I had a lot of extra spice and sauces to add some flavour to the dish.
This establishment should be boycotted, to show them that we farangs won't put up with such inferior quality and service.
Where I eat, I'll take out a menu, point to say, an "apple," and the waiter will say "apple" and then "apple" in his native language.Originally Posted by Wally Dorian Raffles

Also common, is when I'm sitting with a mate and only having beer - no food - a waiter will walk up to us and put a jar of hot chili sauce on our table, even though we are not eating.
About 4 minutes later, the people that are sitting next to us, who have food on their table and are eating, and how actually requested the chili will ask again, and they young bloke will figure out his mistake.
Hhmm......
I'm a big fan of the street stalls. But you've gotta tell them "mai ao chuu rot" (no MSG). Otherwise, they load it up and you're feeling like hell 15 minutes later!
This is an issue I see more and more in the Thai press. Hopefully the day will come when you have to order it instead of the other way around. Sometimes I forget.
Siroccos on the roof of State Tower.
Food: Delicious. Couldn't fault it and worth the extravagent price.
View: Second to none. A stunning setting.
Service: Piss poor. When dinner costs over 10,000 baht and a restaurant calls itself Mediterranean, you should be able to communicate fairly easily with waiting staff. Wrong...
Wine: A fuckin' joke. In Australia, Penfolds Rawsons Retreat costs 225 baht in a bottle shop. Price at Siroccos? 4,200 baht! Penfolds Bin 407 costs about 750 baht. Price at Siroccos? 13,900! Even allowing for the higher tax in Thailand on wines, this would only lift the price to about 600 and 1,800 respectively. Few, if any, restaurants in Australia mark up wines more than 100%. They simply can't get away with it. I imagine other countries aren't much different.
So diners are forced to drink shit quality wine with high quality food...unless they are prepared to have 80-90% of their bill be for drinks alone!
Management: Farcical. Despite diners snapping away with cameras at leisure throughout the restaurant, I was not allowed to take a photo from the steps looking across the restaurant and the Bangkok skyline. He said I could back to the bar and take a photo from there! Not the view I wanted, so I told the guy, in Thai, that having just paid over 10,000 baht for dinner I was taking the fuckin' photo. He called his boss over...I told them (quite politely) to call the police if they feel the need, but I'm taking the photo. They then pleaded in Thai saying they will lose their jobs if I take the photo. As they were private security, and the rule had nothing to do with them, I let it go and walked out...
Cannot recommend.
I heard about the place. 10k for dinner ? I would rather go to a NY style italian place for that kind of money, in NY, not in Bangkok.
Gusto: Soi 23
HiSo Italian place. Used to be excellent, a real italian for expats, reasonable, 5000 baht for 2 including good wine, excellent service, nice setup and atmosphere.
Now, service barely OK, menu has changed because too many Thais would come in (one of the Princess is a regular). Now cooking Italian food for Thais which makes some dishes a fucking joke. Overpriced Thai/Italian food. I am not going back.
Philippe: Soi 39
French restaurant. Nice setup. Service OK. Totally overpriced. 4000 baht for 2 with no wine. Food is below average in terms of French quality. You could expect better for that kind of menu. Spend the money elsewhere.
Basillico: Soi 33
First 2 months it opened, excellent food and service. Then the Italian cook got lazy and put some Thai guy in charge at the Kitchen. A complete disaster. Overpriced. 2000 baht for 2 with 2 glass of wine. Pizza taste like shit now and the menu has good stuff but they can't deliver in terms of taste. Also the place is being flooded with noisy Indians every couples of times, making it a very unpleasant experience (the noise that is)
Do not go there.
" Mrs Balbir's " in Soi 11/1 ( ? ) ate the sheek kebab which was probably underdone since I had the squitters for a week after. The staff couldn't give a toss for punters in the restaurant once they had their orders to sort the chappathi delivery for TG with whom they had a contract to supply.
" Bokhara" totally ersatz Indian/Bangla shite reminiscent of a student's first attempt at self sufficiency.
Little joint on Songprapha Road near Tops supermarket. Serves excellent Halal Islam food. The murtabaks are to die for as they are fried as normal, but then dried off in muslin to take away all and any grease. Great, the roti's are so light they are almost like a crepe in a way.
AO, Take that as a recomendation rather than a boycott, I love Muslim food and live in a Muslim area but the food around here is not so brilliant
Made the mistake of going into O'Brien's (or is it O'Brian's) on Sukhumvit near Soi 5 (I think anyway) Crap western food, expensive and bad service.... And I think owned by the same kind folk that brought us the ultra-delicious Subway Sandwiches too.
The crap sushi restaurant I went to in Los Angeles today as well. Avoif sushi on Ventura Blvd at half-empty restaurants.

Aroon (Rai) in Chiang Mai, near the moat.
They try to pass themselves off as 'the local authentic Thai restaurant', but only tourists would buy that image. Their food is average, the prices outrages and the staff have all been thumped by the blithering idiot stick.
Despite all this, and amazingly enough, their heavy advertising and an honourable mention in Lonely Planet means they are almost always full.
On Saturday tried that Mexican place around by the Moat, ordinary food I think, maybe its just that Mexican food doesn't do much for me but this place seemed to have particularly bland food. Are there any decent Mexican restaurants in CM ?
No.
Chiang Mai is good for Southern Thai (Phuket Lai Kram), Japanese (noname outdoors place near Sahapanich TV on Huay Kaew (cheap and nice) and Zen in Airport Plaza (expensive and nice)), Korean (small place in Chiang Mai Land and new place on top floor of Airport Plaza), Inexpensive buffet (opposite the open air Japanese Place on Huay Kaew)...
and then some.
Not good for farang food... well, Italian is ok - there is that place run by Sergio the Italian - Buonissimo, out on the way to Mae Jo, but you need your own ride for that.
There is no real good mexican food in the LOS its that simple. Some of it passes as okay because we all miss the real deal so much.
