    The Barbican, Soi Thaniya, Silom

I fancied a change from Sukhumvit, so me and GoW headed off to Silom to visit one of my favourite pubs in Bangkok, the Barbican.

For some reason they didn't have their outside lights turned on when I took this picture. Maybe one of Taksin's loonies has had a word with Khum Somchart, the Barbican's affable GM.

According to their own blurb, "The trendy split-level Brasserie offers a fantastic menu, an extensive choice of drinks and a fun loving crowd of people to mix with." And it is indeed 'split level'; we chose the basement level, so we could look at the Japanese guys drooling all over the Thai gals in their nice frocks.

We ordered drinks first. What else could I have, but a lovely pint of Old Speckled Hen. The OSH in the Barbican is always 'just right', and it again proved to be. Gow went a bit OTT and ordered pineapple juice, so I forced some of my pint down her throat. And the verdict? "Yuk!"

Moving swiftly on.....I ordered Chicken Ricotta (Chicken breast stuffed with ricotta cheese & spinach with sauté onion potato, grilled mixed vegetables & a white wine parsley sauce) at ฿300.

GoW once again went out on a limb and ordered the Roast Chicken Dinner (Chicken breast with roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, carrots, garden peas & chicken gravy) at ฿250.

My dish was superb; everything just melted in the mouth, but someone nicked my asparagus. Hmmm....
GoW found the chicken dinner to be just a boring as the one she had in the Bull's Head, but was impressed with the cauliflower cheese.

Seeing as we were both stuffed after the main course, we shared a dessert. You can't go wrong with Apple Pie & Ice Cream. I didn't confuse things by ordering custard as well this time. Needless to say; it was yummy.

The Barbican isn't the cheapest place in town, but it's by no means the dearest. The service is good and the quality of food is way above you're usual pub fare. The bill came to around ฿1,200 which I think is very fair.

I have just had dinner and the food still looks great. I have a mind to print out the photographs and show them to the cook in the pub. They serve up a travesty of Thai food.

Yes I can see that, but the cook at the pub is Thai and the stuff she cooks is pretty crap whether it is English or Thai.

Always been one of my favourites, particularly when I used to visitd as a tourist. Always made sure I dropped in for a visit.

A little less to my taste these days...full of expats on salaries starting at 10 times mine! They also make it pretty difficult to move from 5-00 to 7-00.

But the owner is always friendly and they have some pretty good happy hours gimmicks from time to time that make it pretty reasonably priced. A good variety of beers and wines as well...

The owner is a scouser who also owns the Bulls Head.

There are 2 or 3 owners actually. I've only met the woman (Aussie I think). Nice lady.

That's Joy. She's the MD and a shareholder. There's no 'owner' as such as it's a limited company, but the majority shareholder (including proxies for the Thai shares I would assume) is the scouser.

Still, nice place, but too many 'suits'.

Thai birds are funny when it comes to English food - the missus loves mushy peas, rhubarb, fish and chips but hates yorkshire puddings.

How can anybody in their right mind hate yorkshire puddings.
