    A kitchen garden``

Greetings all. having had a belly full of the crap and bullshit here on Samui, The majority of which comes from the Farangs here I might add, we have decided to move up to the land we were given by my wife's Father in Issan.
As well as overseeing the house build I would love to have a small but varied kitchen garden to keep me occupied. Can any of you knowledgeable people point me in the direction of any websites specifically aimed at Thailand or suggest what I can and cannot grow there. A few poly tunnels would be fine and I am reading up on growing mushrooms which looks interesting but what to plant is lacking.
    Cheers all BF !

What part of Isaan? What grows well in one part may not in others.

As for resources for info and advice....one needn't stray too far.
Our own gardening/farming sections are quite useful.

As are the sorted other Thai forums of similar ilk.

Cheers guys. The land is about as far West as you can get. South of Ubon Ratchattani I am not looking to do anything commercial just as a sort of hobby and to eat some home grown veg and herbs as I love cooking. Basically it is what would be called a small holding back in the UK.
A few chickens, ducks and pigs and the garden. Something to keep me off the Chang rather than make any money

Mushrooms grow well. Rather than grow them, a short walk about in the right season (with or without a Chang) and plenty grow wild. Of course some of them will kill ya so best have a local expert along. A Thai mushroom lady. Note the several varieties.

All your thai herbs and chillies will come up at the first planting. As will any papaya your throw in for compost. After the floods we had a kitchen garden that was not to be believed. Try planting things like western tomatoes in the least sun. Best of luck and keep us informed.

Philippines and Thailand are about the same. Besides my farm, I have a large home garden. We grow tomatoes (including American Beefsteak and Roma), green beans, Japanese sweet corn, eggplant, Thai chilli, sour gourds and other stuff used in Filipino cooking, radishes and carrots (neither of which have done that well in the past - possibly soil). We also have a good supply of mango, breadfruit, limes, avocado, papaya and pineapples (two years from planting to harvest). Planting coffee bushes next week, as Batangas is the coffee province of the Philippines. Failures: lettuce and strawberries.

^Not me, just because I don't really like it. But given how well cucumbers and sour gourds grow here, I would think that squash would do fine. I really think if I planted a pool cue in the soil down here, it would sprout leaves. Only problem I have is with crops that require really cool weather. I am at a pretty high altitude, and it is never really hot (Lipa City, Batangas), but not cold enough for things like lettuce.

    The Summer Squash [yellow] variety?

As a rule, these type of softer squash - summer squash, zucchini, etc don't do well in tropical conditions and loamy soil.

The variety of squashes that proliferate better are of the gourd type....thicker skin and hardier to the sub-soils.

Some were introduced and others native to the broader SE Asian/South Asian regions.

If you're not sure - examine the larger local markets and you'll find a number of temperate and tropical varieties.

    Why the fuck not

    Ya minted?

If not, why not try to grow hydroponics - like weed. import high value per kilo low space needed fruit/veg seeds and grow in controlled environment.?

Sorry, I didn't mean "grow stuff like weed" i meant "grow stuff hydroponically using the same technologies only for exotic fruit/veg"

Ubon..... west Issan? Surely not Big Fella!
Bloody hell, 6 rai to play with..... that'll be a bit more than "just as a sort of hobby"...... you could set up a whole market garden business on that land! Look forward to hearing of your venture, keep us posted?

Thanks for the input guys, all most welcome. I have been looking at hydroponics and it does look interesting. As I love all mushrooms I would love to give those a go and the course sounds great. I suppose my Thai would need to be a lot better if it is at the Uni ? As said the intention isn't to make money from it but rather to keep me occupied as everyone I have spoken to that has moved to the country says the worst part is the boredom. Cheers again guys

Just had a look at Google earth for the first time. very impressed. They have a very clear picture of my house. I'm evidently at around 500 feet above sea level.
