The video was so convincing it even had Gold Coast marine experts believing it was an agitated stingray.
Dr Jonathan Werry viewed the footage yesterday and said it was rare behaviour, but conceded it did look like it was a stingray giving the male swimmer the message to “back off”.

Had to look Stingray up in IMDB. Its going back a lot of years, but I remember a supermarionation TV show called Supercar, which turns out to have been done by the same director as Stingray. Supercar was apparently Gerry Anderson's first shot at a TV show using this puppetry technique. I can't remember watching any episodes of Stringray though.
