Scottish Open: Donald wins but Montgomerie to miss Open

    -19: L Donald (Eng)
    -15: F Andersson (Swe)
-14: A Cabrera (Arg), G Coetzee (RSA), N Colsaerts (Bel), L Gagli (Ita), M Tullo (Chi), M Wiegele (Aut), S Jamieson (Sco)
-13: R Coles (Eng), J Donaldson (Wal), P Hanson (Swe), M Kuchar (US)

World number one Luke Donald maintained his impressive form ahead of next week's Open with victory in the rain-hit Scottish Open at Castle Stuart.

Donald carded a final-day score of 63 to clinch the title by four shots on 19 under from Swede Fredrik Andersson Hed.

"I am high in confidence going into the Open," Donald told BBC Sport.

Colin Montgomerie's score of 10 under par was not good enough to see him qualify for the Open, an event he will sit out for the first time since 1989.

The former Europe Ryder Cup captain needed a top-five finish at Castle Stuart to stand a chance of making next week's major in Sandwich.

Despite briefly holding a share of the lead following a birdie at the par-five sixth, a disastrous double-bogey on the short 11th ultimately cost him an opportunity to seal his Open place as he eventually finished back in joint 31st place.

"I got in a position and it's disappointing," said the eight-time European number one, whose five second places in major are a record for someone who has never won one.

"It was going well and then I sort of ran out of puff. I'm just driving home now and it will sink in then."

Turkey: Fenerbahce boss remanded on match-fix charge

The chairman of the leading Turkish football team Fenerbahce has been remanded in custody on charges of match-fixing.

Aziz Yildirim is among 26 people, including other Fenerbahce executives, to face trial over 19 suspect matches.

Supporters went on the rampage outside the courthouse in Istanbul, and across town near the club's stadium.

Police arrested 61 people last weekend in a massive investigation of match-fixing across the country.

When news emerged from court of the jailings, fans who had gathered in support of Mr Yildirim turned their anger on journalists and television crews covering the case.

And on the other, Asian side of the Bosphorus strait, there were angry protests by hundreds more supporters in the Fenerbahce neighbourhood.

The Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan defended the court ruling.

"I am a Fenerbahce supporter too. We should all welcome the outcome of an issue that has been taken to court," Mr Erdogan told the NTV news channel.

Brooks could be quizzed as witness by phone-hack probe police

News International chief Rebekah Brooks could be questioned by police investigating phone-hacking by the News of the World, the BBC understands.

It is understood she would be interviewed as a witness not a suspect.

She is under pressure to quit over her former editorship of the paper, which has closed amid the hacking scandal.

Relatives of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler, whose phone was allegedly hacked, meet Deputy PM Nick Clegg later for talks on the public inquiries.

News Corp chairman, and chief executive, Rupert Murdoch flew into London on Sunday to personally handle his organisation's response to the phone-hacking crisis.

After visiting News International (NI) - which News Corp owns - for talks with senior executives, Mr Murdoch appeared later with Mrs Brooks. Asked what his priority was, he said, "This one," gesturing at her and smiling.

Mrs Brooks was the News of the World (NoW) editor in 2002 when voicemails on 13-year-old Milly Dowler's mobile phone were allegedly intercepted after her abduction.

    HOLD THE FRONTPAGE

Victoria and David Beckham announce birth of daughter

Victoria Beckham has given birth to a baby girl, whom she and husband David have named Harper Seven.

On his Facebook page, footballer Beckham said: "I am so proud and excited to announce the birth of our daughter Harper Seven Beckham."

The girl was delivered at Cedars Sinai hospital in Los Angeles, at 7.55 local time (1555 BST), and weighed 7lb 10oz.

The Beckhams' sons Brooklyn, 11, Romeo, eight, and Cruz, five, were said to be "delighted to have a sister".

David Beckham's Facebook statement said his 37-year-old wife was "doing really well" following the birth.

Mrs Beckham, 37, has swapped pop for fashion in recent years, launching her own successful label.

Previously she was one of The Spice Girls, who dominated the music charts in the late 90s with hits such as Wannabe, Mama and 2 Become 1.

The group, who reformed for a world tour in 2007, have sold 75 million records.

    She married David in 1999.

Harper Seven? (Bazaar or Bizarre?, maybe just trendy and fashionable eh!)

Qatar 2022 'whistleblower' in corruption U-turn

The "whistleblower" behind a series of corruption allegations involving Fifa executive committee members and Qatar's 2022 World Cup bid has told the BBC she fabricated the claims.

Phaedra Al Majid, a former international media officer for Qatar 2022, said she wanted to exact revenge after losing her job on the campaign.

She decided to go public after she said her "lies had gone too far".
Al Majid has now signed a legal affadavit retracting the allegations.

Originally made anonymously to journalists, the claims became the subject of an inquiry by the parliamentary select committee for culture, media and sport.

She says she is deeply sorry for the trouble she has caused World Cup officials in Qatar and the three Fifa executive committee members she accused of accepting bribes.

"I was very upset after I left the bid and wanted to basically hurt the bid back," she said. "My intentions were to make a few headlines, I never expected that my lies would be carried on and discussed in parliament.

"It just went too far. I never expected it to come to this point. There was never anything suspicious or any wrongdoing on Qatar's part.

"I cannot tell you how sorry I am. I have hurt reputations of three members of the Fifa exco, I have hurt their reputation, and more importantly I have hurt my colleagues on the Qatar bid."

A good flogging should set her mind right!

Cyprus: Zygi naval base munitions blast kills 12

Twelve people have been killed and about 30 injured in a blast at a munitions dump in southern Cyprus.

The blast, at 0600 (0300 GMT), tore through the Evangelos Florakis naval base at Zygi, knocking out the island's largest power station nearby.

The munitions depot contained explosives seized in 2009 from a ship travelling from Iran to Syria.

There is no indication that the cause of the blast was deliberate, says the BBC's Tabitha Morgan in Nicosia

Two containers of explosive caught fire, a police spokesman told the semi-official CNA news agency.

There were 98 containers in the depot, seized from the ship, the Monchegorsk, which was intercepted travelling from Iran to Syria in January 2009.

Cyprus said the shipment violated UN sanctions on Iran.

The fire spread to the nearby Vassilikou power station, causing widespread electricity cuts. It is the largest power station on the island.

    Tour de France crashes

Stage nine of the Tour will be remembered for this cringe-inducing crash which left Johnny Hoogerland bearing numerous scars (as well as his backside). Hoogerland somersaulted through the air before being flung into a barbed-wire fence - posted earlier but repeated for those who may have missed the suffering

The driver of a French TV vehicle caused the incident. Not only did his wild overtaking manoeuvre skittle Hoogerland, but it left Spain's Juan Antonio Flecha on the deck with his bike in pieces too

Jurgen Van den Broeck had to be carted away after an earlier crash on stage nine. The Belgian looked worse for wear after his high-speed crash

Russia's Alexandre Vinokourov also had to be ferried off in an ambulance after launching himself head-first down a ravine during the same 208km stage

Vinokourov broke his leg in the fall
